I would buy Les a beer and he seems like a nice guy. However starving yourself for 5 days or doing drugs with aborigines does not teach survival skills, I do like his harmonica skills.

I don't know Les. Never met the man. He has made himself wealthy doing what he enjoys. Good for him. I don't know his source of expertise. He didn't really get on the survival bandwagon until the mid-nineties from what I understand. Before that he was a musician/songwriter. Briefly a canoe guide and garbage collector in the early nineties. I have not seen where he has claimed to be anything other than an "expert" in survival, a photographer and producer. Ive only seen a few of his videos and found them mildly entertaining. Anoying at times, but usually entertaining. After all he is... an entertainer.

fair enough.

he may have been a late bloomer but his show is actually pretty decent.

seems to be pretty passionate as well.

I don't post much anymore but this thread peaked my interest. I really don't have a comment on Bear, Dave or the new guy Tetis or whatever his name is, I am pretty much over TV survival soaps. I do think it is hilarious that someone who is military or ex military are supposedly endowed with some special ethics, morals or skills. Some of the biggest pieces of crap, brainless idiots I have ever met in my life were/are service members to include SF "operators". It kills me how these shows all seem to tout someones military service as proof of prowess, actually it is kinda sad. Chris

There’s a lot of truth to that brother! I will say that these “survival soaps” ( great name) is about all I watch outside of a little news and sports. In fact, I would much rather have a survival soap re-run in the background than the current news these days!

I about spewed out my beer reading this one! You need to shoot me a PM; I thought you moved back to GA or SC?

A decent actor, yes. Somewhat more believable in most of his productions that some of the other actors in the genre. And it is an entertainment genre first and foremost. Not intended to be educational. Well, even when that is exactly how it is portrayed by the networks (the genre, not Les himself from what I have seen of him). I do have to giggle when he eats some repugnant morsel and proclaims "I an not getting paid enough for this!" His recent estimated net worth was five and a half million. And as I said, good on him. None of these actors are hurting financially. Well, I've not heard much about Tom Brown lately. Does he still have his fortune?

in all fairness i do think that some of the survival shows are intended to offer education/information.

(cody lundin and les stroud in particular).

are their bank accounts massive? sure, but that's pretty irrelevant considering their lifestyles.

cody lundin lives in a self sustaining home with no utility bills.

he designed and built it before his fame (to my knowledge).

how many other wealthy people choose to live like this? probably zero.

as far as les, i'm certain he's far from materialistic in his lifestyle as well.

on his other show beyond survival he would briefly live among tribes around the world and learn their way of survival.

my point is i truly think that he has a passion beyond most peoples to learn about survival and everything that it involves.

sure the pay is good but the job's not for everyone.

Almost. Cody's house has electrical wiring and running water plumbing and he cooks with bottled gas. His earth bermed house is made of rebar and gunnite (manufactured shotcrete concrete... like a swimming pool). But really... I don't care about the lifestyles of the rich and famous. I don't idolize any of them so if they want to live in a yurt or a sprawling ranch house, they can do as they please. It is their money and they earned it. Just like Justin Beiber and Charlie Sheen. All of them have their fans and detractors. And agents, producers and directors.

well for a guy who doesn't care about the rich and famous you've certainly proved that you know more than i do about cody lundins house :)

fame aside, cody practically dedicates his life to teaching primitive survival techniques.

he is and has been very involved.

don't get me wrong, i don't idolize these personalities nor am i gullible enough to believe that dual survival is not mostly staged.

it almost has to be.

either way, i find them to be entertaining/informative.

there's no harm in that.

I have it on good authority that a wise man once said, "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."

Actually if you go to the original text it says " Let him is without this sin caste the first stone " that leaves me with out a rock
The man ask for forgiveness my beliefs say if I expect foregiveness I need to forgive. Dave Canerbury Is a vet volunteered I have never seen anything about him having less than honorable discharge. So I respect that.
The fact is Dave Canterbury knows more about survival/outdoors than most here

I use the same primitive technique to seek knowledge that Cody does. Google. ;)

that's funny but inaccurate.

supposedly, he's never even watched a single episode of DS. i really doubt that cody lundin spends his free time surfing the web like some of us..

now i know a guy like you won't believe a word he says and it's fairly obvious you think he has no skills or knowledge on survival.

perhaps you should read his books.

the guy is well educated (like it or not).

impressive resume for an actor as well.

i'd respect your opinion more if you took it further than google for info.

He does have and use a computer (google pictures shows one in his home). He has a web presence as does his girlfriend who is also a teacher in Prescott (Sara DeSalme). I never said he had no skills or knowledge. Nor did I say that I won't believe a word he says. He likely says a lot of things I would agree with and a lot that I would not. And vice versa. We could likely teach each other some things. Heck, I'll even cook the steaks. Send him over. :)

Sara DeSalme is not Cody's girlfriend she is Joe DeSalme's wife. You shouldn't make it sound like you know something when you don't.

On this we all agree. He's an actor.

You are boring, you keep making the same simplistic point over and over. Do you know to what extent things are scripted on the show or to what extent the survival experts are free to make improptu contributions? You don't. So don't pretend to. Because you don't have anything else to add to the discussion, etiher for lack of information or analytical ability, you just keep making the same comment over and over. Why keep posting on a topic which is so meaningless to you then? Find something real to talk about on another thread, otherwise add something to the discussion other than the same constant point.

Yeah, I was quoting another internet source. Here is a different one.

He and Katherine Minott, an English instructor at both Yavapai and Prescott colleges, now live in a house in tiny Granite Dells, a Prescott offshoot.

It is Cody's own primitive website?

The former mistaken identification of his girlfriend came from Rocky Mountain Bushcraft.
Sara Desalme who is Codys girlfriend if i'm reading it correctly has said so.

OMG! Incorrect info on ABODUDE on the WWW! Say it ain't so!

We are admonished, correctly so, to confine our discussions to the topics at hand, not other members. I do understand that some people become emotionally invested in the cult of personalities of celebrity, but an excellent survival skill to learn is to put emotion aside.

Sorry folks, I've known somebody for many years, that taught with and has known Cody Lundin since he was barely out of his teens, Cody may have his quirks, but there is no question he knows his outdoors stuff.
