Did your Traditional knife get a workout today? -Part II

Pitifully slow day for knife work. Used the pen blade of the Schrade stockman to slice open the plastic wrap on a new filter for the home AC intake, and used the screwdriver blade of the Victorinox Fieldmaster to turn the screws and open the intake vent grate.

I do have to cut some chicken breasts into strips for dinner tonight. Might be time to get the Bulldog copperhead back out.

Girlfriend says, "Let me use me your sharpest knife." So, this Lloyd (semi-flexible 52100) was on sushi duty.

My Northfield #55 cut the strings on a new bale of hay this morning, and sliced open a cardboard box. It's always in my pocket, ready for whatever I may ask of it. :)

Used the Bulldog to slice fruit for my triple B breakfast this morning, barley, banana, brown sugar.

Didn't get chance to post these yesterday.

I'd noticed a glut of bilberries (aka. blaeberry north of the border) in fruit on Monday, so I took my berry comb/picker to work and spent about forty minutes merrily foraging away once I clocked off.

About a pound of berries in a short amount of time :)

Only one thing for it, a classic Yorkshire bilberry pie....and not a Bramley in sight! I remember having these as a kid at my grannies. So I was gonna do her prou and do it proper.

All butter shortcrust

Had more berries than I thought. Good thing the classic enamel pie plate had a nice 'dish' to it

Bit of pastry and some berries left so I baked the small one to have warm.

I was feeling good so just had a bit of single cream with it....rather than double or ice cream (or both)

Tasted tip-top!

Looking forward to a slice or two of the big one cool this evening.

I love bilberries!

^ Great looking pie, Scruff!!

Used my Eureka to trim some mint from the garden for a fresh batch of sun tea:

That looks great Scruff, what a handy picker too  Bilberries are my absolute favourite fruit for a pie. When I was a kid you could buy bilberry pies from the local bakers.

Today, my trusty Castor sliced up some nectarines, split up some fatwood sticks to give to a friend, opened my mail, and helped keep me in rabbit food.

Thanks chaps.

Just tried a thin sliver of the pie after cutting a slice for my elderly neighbour. She really loved it....in fact she nearly snatched the plate from me when she saw it.

I got a thumbs up for the pastry, thanks Doug, but we shall have to see what 'the boss' thinks when she gets it.

Jack, that actually looks very fresh tasting.
Bon appetit!

Smithhammer - thanks for the reminder I have been meaning to make some myself. Hope it hits the spot :)

Don't be shy, eat that pie!!

^^ lol! I will Sam, been busy.

Tonight's dinner, I was told, was to be Arancini (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arancini basically breaded risotto balls.

I had these when I went to Puglia in Italy, in what was essentially a fish and chip shop.

The Nuragus was called in for the chopping duties

Got frying, splash of vermouth to 'deglaze' and then hit it with some mushroom stock & porcini mushroom powder my colleague gifted me

You have to get the consistency pretty dry/thick

There's always room for pudding :)

Bilberry Pie...drool:thumbup:

The forests here will soon be full of them and a good crop due to a hot May&June. I don't use one of those gathering scoops as the berries are so juicy that you pick them by hand. I do use one for the waxy Lingonberries. One thing, the forests are alive with biting insects (Horseflies, Mosquitoes and soon Elk flies) I use a Fly Jacket to keep them off otherwise it's total misery. You also have to watch out for Adders under the Bilberry carpet...:eek: I grow bush Bilberries (Americans call these Blueberries) which are also tasty but very different. larger and they're not juicy with blue/black juice. Great fun eating Bilberry pie and getting blue tongue and lips.:D

My 55 Wharncliffe Houndstooth cut 2 breakfast oranges, for dinner it sliced tomatoes&garlic for tuna pasta salad, otherwise not much knife action today except for the usual tinkering&fiddling....know what I mean?:)
