Elusive Schrades

Came across a nice Schrade Walden 804 whittler, with stainless blades.

What a beauty! No wonder you're smiling.

I have its companion, an 804 in carbon.

-- A gracious gift from Owen/ddml, a knife that confirms my love of whittlers, and instantly reveals what all of you have gone on about regarding Schrade's smooth, edge-retaining steel.

Thawk and P, those 804's are gorgeous! I just may have to break down and hunt for one of those soon.

Al, what a beautiful collection! Your grandfather's knife is just fantastic. The top barlow in the collection has left me drooling!

Thanks to a heads up from our friend Thawk, I purchased this wonderful knife on the Interweb!
It is based on Schrade Cut Co's wonderful Balloon Whittler pattern. Here you see it in as-found condition, with just a couple drops of oil, and a wipe with a cotton cloth with a smidgeon of oil in it. I will not polish or clean it, but will preserve the factory finish. There are a couple of fly-specks on it, and some blade rub. It is very tightly fitted.

Here you see a notch in the brass "wedge" which allows the blade to be slightly longer, and fall in tight!

Look how close the blades fall in together!!

The two "standard" blades are stamped. The special blade is not.

A reverse etch on the Main.

The "pick" is used to assist the typesetter!!

I can't believe the condition!! The perfect shape for a museum-grade collection!

Charlie,
You got a beautiful, well made knife there.
Thanks for posting the close-ups, nice and tidy fit.

I like that wedge notch on the Langbein. With it being a split back whittler pattern does that date it as a Cut Co?

Good question Hal. I just feels like one to me. Later knives feel slightly heavier - barely perceptible! But I have no sure evidence.

That's an awesome Whittler Charlie! I had my eye on it for a while as well, just never ended up pulling the trigger. I'm so happy to see that it went to a good home. When it went off radar recently I got a little worried. ;)

That is a stunning whittler, Charlie. So clean, amazing bone, what a prize!

I too had been eyeing that particular knife for a good long time. I always thought the asking price was high, as i could find no information about the knife - but now I think I'm keener on your methods 'waynorth'. Very cool knife. Thanks for the clearer images.

Glad you all like it. Hal's Eagle Eye zeroed in and I think we both recognized some goodness there! Sometimes bad pictures help.

My GOODNESS! Charlie, that piece is just MASTERFUL!

Dangit, now you have my gears going trying to reverse engineer that thing in my head... I see this thread producing some frustrating, yet fulfilling projects for me to strive for in the future... Yer killin' me!

Wonderful Purchase Charlie, I agree with the comments on the Museum Grade. I have never seen that Pick nor the stampings before- Chas. Lanbein is this a Retail firm that Schrade contracted the knives out too?
