Fall Trackrock Hammerin?

B.Goode,
Travel light, there's aways plenty of forging material on hand. If not we'll sneak up on the neighbors old Chevy p/u and borrow a couple of springs.
Just remember your safety glasses.

the details are still a bit sketchy for me, guys.....what are we going to be doing? Are there demonstrations? forging? etc?

Is this something that I can invite my father-in-law to attend with me? (interested in steel-banging too)

Bunch of folks stand around and watch Carl, watch me forge. :)
We dont plan any Demos Dan. Usually people set up their forges and anvils and go to town making what they wish. Everybody just sorta kicks in with what they know and how to improve on what they are doing.

Lots of groupies hang around waiting on Kit to show up happens a lot.

Forgot to add . Anyone that want to watch or participate in anyway is welcome. Suppliers, all knifemakers etc . not just forging guys. I have to say that so Jerry will come.

I hope to get an eyeful of what to do when I get a forge set up at home. I am sure Mark and Carl will let us beat on some steel :D
If anything its just a great way to see what you look at everyweek on the net and how its really done... its not a planed out itinerary but good to be there.

Darren's bringing my forge down that weekend....maybe we could give it a "trial-by-fire-first-run"....? :D

Or is that "light-the-fire-and-run"......

I forget...

:p

I'll let the F-I-L know....he's more the informal type and would prefer to do a little watchin'....and a lil' bangin'.....

Sounds like what I was hoping for.....except for the bit about Kit.....:D  :footinmou

Now now! You wake the dragon you stand and fight! There's no honor in the poke and run.
And yes, "Chicken Toes" does need alot of watching.
Just might wind up in F.O.O.S.R.K up to your neck (if your short like me).

Costa and I visited with Captn Cow all afternoon. Nanner, nanner, nanner!

Dragon? , Who has captured the toad? :0

So how is the Godfather? Hope he and Miss Helen are well and ready for a trout dinner by T-rock. One month whoo hoo.

does anyone have any desert ironwood to bring down? I'd be glad to pay for it. Just didnt know if someone had a big piece t cut from.

I have a piece.....:D
(see pics)

but there's no way I'd cut it, let alone transport it.....was so danged expensive!!!

Open question for all attending - I'm looking for an anvil. If you got an extra you could spare (I know, big stretch) - sure would love to bring one home with me. Just had to ask.....

Daniel,
You're flying in, right? Just kidding. Anvils are tough things to let go of, even the junkers. Have you tried making one up from scrap? Two of my favorite ones were not originally intended as anvils but they have made the transition and work quite well. I'll bring some pics up to the HI. Might give you some ideas. See you in 4 weeks.

Just for the record. I sure ain't a hammer type guy. Too old and broke for that stuff, but I enjoyed the last Trackrock more than most of those attending would ever know. The friendship and fellowship was tremendous. Just standing around watching some of the Noobs doing their first hammer stuff was well worth it. Sitting on the tailgate of Poplin's truck, eating some of the best Bruinswick stew (Crex, was that your wife that made it?) that has ever passed thru my lips, was a real experience.
Guys, if you are within travelling distance of Trackrock, please visit. I plan to be there. Hossum says he will be there. Pat (pff), who has a fine collection of Customs to show, will be there, and some of the best forging guys that won't hesitate to share information will be there.
Just mark your friggin calendar and plan to attend.
Blues, you reading this? It's not that far for you..Love to see ya.

here's the funny part, crex.

I'll be picking up a 200-4R transmission in Alabama and a forge (maybe two) at Trackrock. I figure "What the heck?"....might try to talk someboy into helping me find an anvil....

Nothing like 800 lbs of steel in your backseat....:o

I'm not opposed to the railroad anvil idea....probably could harden it myself. In fact, I'm not even opposed to the granite anvil idea either. Like I said, just figured I should ask - just in case.

Kit - looking forward to see you there. Wish I could take more time off work to stay the whole weekend....

Kit,
Glad you're coming. Mark made me promise to stop pounding so much and visit with folks more. Can't help it though when a young'un shows me he's wanting to learn. Look forward to seeing you again.

Man what a way to network among folks in the trade!

And Kit, for the record, Mark's wife Deb made the Brunswick Stew that was so good (even if it didn't have squirrel in it!). My wife's planning on making another large batch of Mediterranian Chili (you missed out on last spring) to help feed the troups.

Daniel- I'll look around and see if I can wrangle up a chunk of RxR iron for your trip home. Got to keep that load balanced!

Daniel , I have two anvils on permastorage at Trackrock. I might be convinced to let one go.Maybe.

Man am I looking forward to this.

Howdy folks!! Just another newling registering for Trackrock. Name is Clark and like I said I am brand new. but having lots of fun with hot steel. :D

Any thoughts of what I should bring??? maybe some food or sompin'???? I will get with CREX beforehand too, so if you don't speak up...........Oh yeah, I have been told I make some decent hot sauce, so you can count on atleast a couple of quarts of that coming along!!!!!!!!!

I have learned a great deal just from reading here and hope to learn a great deal more in person.

So....thanks to you all and look forward to meeting you characters!

See ya'll what time on Saturday?

VV

Welcome abour Clark. That's quite the user name you got there :) Last names not Kent is it ? Villian / superhero kinda thing maybe. We start rolling when we feel like it usually around 8 or so. Some guy named Curly Blue Turtle has been know to come down from the hills and sneak in some forging long after smart folks are in bed. Other than Carl's wife bringing the chilli we dont have any set plans for food that I'm aware of. I like hot sauce but not too hot for human consumption.
Looking forward to seeing some new faces and some old faces. Really old faces.

Yeah, I've seen some of his post midnight pounding results. Not bad for the half blind. He's been known to sit up on a dark porch late at night with an old forg named Chicken Toes and practice his phyllisophical waxing, too.
Yessir, real strange bunch!

Hot sauce would be more than welcome.

You forgot to tell Daniel he's got to take the stump too.

not the first time I've been called stumpy.....:D :p

Can somebody email me a cost breakdown? (camping, entry, initiation, etc. :D )

I just realized I have no idea what costs are invovled - other than the gasoline I'll need to do the 1600 miler.....:footinmou

I will be bringin my father-in-law and my brother-in-law. Green-horns to modern steel-banging, but great craftsmen in their own right....True handyman types.

Daniel,
No charge for the Hammer-in. We gather for sharing, learning, and fellowship, to make new and lasting friends and have a good time. We usually gather after hours around a good fire for some serious tech talk.

You may be asked to chip in a little for the Saturday lunch if the crowd gets any bigger, but it will be a nominal amount. Rest of meals you're on your own. Stop at the Ingles in Blairsville and stock up, like you would on any camping trip.

For camping fees at the campground and to make reservations go to www.trackrock.com also great directions for once you get to Blairsville. There are also motels close by in Blairsville and Young Harris. The campgrounds are nice and have full hookup at most sites (there are a couple of primitive sites).
If you let them know you're coming for the hammer-in they will try to place you close to the rest of the hammerheads if they can.

If your inlaws can drive a nail with purpose and accuracy, they'll be able to pound steel with decent results.

Any other ???
