favorite survival movies

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Nanook of the North. It's a silent black and white film from 1922--the first documentary feature length film ever made. A polar explorer named Robert Flaherty spent several years living with Inuits, and made a film documenting in some detail the various aspects of their lives: how they slept, sheltered, hunted, traveled, etc.--how they survived with very few and very basic tools in one of the harshest environments around.

More discussion of Nanook of the North is here:

Every time that movie comes on, I stop what I'm doing, and watch it, hypnotized. And then a "Rambo Knife" fixation takes hold of me, and I pine away for a whopping big hollow handled knife thats so heavy, I would almost never (realistically) carry it. :)

Oh yeah. :D

Nanook of the North is a great film. Sadly the main character Nanook died of starvation before the film was released.

Since I build skin on frame kayaks I was very happy to get a chance to see real seal skin covered kayaks in action from over 80 years ago. The beginning kayak scene was faked the camera cuts away after one person gets out from below deck - you can't fit that many people into even a large East Hudson Bay kayak. The later kayak scenes are great.

Because of the cold the movie camera would freeze and need repairs somebody had to fix them - there were no camera repairmen around so they handed it over to an Inuit man to fix! The ability for these " primitive" men to repair items which they had no prior experience is not infrequently mentioned by other arctic explorers/adventurers.

There is a modern movie about Robert Flaherty who filmed Nanook of the North it is called "Kabloonak" and worthwhile. Another interesting movie about the arctic is "The White Dawn".

Band of the Hand, loved the line one good knife can feedyou, cloth you and keep you warm at night.

That is a great knife! One of the first I got from Rob. Dick makes those, but Rob makes one that is a little more "tactical"

Hey Bill, you coming down to Eugene on the 13th?
be safe... Ted

My picks would be.

Jeremiah Johnson
The Mountain Men

One I haven't seen mentioned is "The Earthling", if my memory serves, this movie stared a very young Ricky Schroeder, and Hollywood legend William Holden.

The plot was that Holden is a avid outdoorsman dying of cancer, so he treks off to die in his beloved wilderness, only to discover a young 6-8 year old boy (R.S.) who's parents have been killed in a camping accident. Realizing he will die before being able to get the child to safety, Holden begins teaching the child wilderness survival and how to find his way out to safety. I haven't seen this movie in many years, but I remember it as being very good wilderness stuff.

Anybody else remember this one?

Dang! I forgot that one, that is an awesome movie!

Yeah, My Side Of The Mountain was a good one. I guess that was my first exposure to survival other than Land Of The Giants.

How about SORCEROR also titled FACES OF FEAR with ROY SCHIDER about a group of men trucking NITRO across the jungle. Great movie about humen willpower & resorcefulness.

You'd have to be older, or just like old movies to remember this one, Inferno, with Robert Ryan. I don't recall the whole story, but his wife tries to kill him or have him killed and left in the desert.

OK, now your showing your age. I know, because I use to watch that show too.....;)

".... I don't recall the whole story..."

For you Geraldo, I once saw the movie and I agree with you

"Ryan is a millionaire playboy who breaks his leg on a desert outing. His sexy wife, Fleming, and his business partner (and her lover), Lundigan, pretend to go off for help but actually leave him to die. Ryan finally realizes they are not coming back and struggles across the desert for help. He finally confronts Lundigan in a cabin, beating him in a fight and starting a fire. Though too much detail causes the film to drag in spots, it is overall an interesting piece. This was Fox's first 3-D production, and the technique is used effectively. Ryan plays one of his best roles; the courage he shows in overcoming the hazards of nature is gripping."

Another one I like is "Papillon" with Steve Mcqueen (and the book is also a great one)

I was a little bigger kid. Just turned 47. It's all relative. The important thing is where still around to talk about it!
