Finally seeing the other side of Strider

Shocker! Both of these knives can exist under the same roof. I've had 2 SnGs and 4 Sebenzas. All 6 have been and are perfect. I enjoy each for various reasons, but both have perfect lockup, perfect blade centering and smooth as glass. Lucky on the Strider? Maybe, but 2 in a row makes me happy. Should I ever need service from Strider, I am quite sure I'll be do all the right things, say the right things and not have to make a post about anything!

Got it. I should buy a knife with obvious flaws just so I can evaluate how good the customer service is at fixing them. Right.

Who told you to buy a knife for customer service evaluation purposes?
The point of my comment was that if you havent bought one, why pipe up on a customer service thread only to say you have no experience on the subject but your knives are nicer, by the way.

Hinderer is just as good IMO, I've been using an XM-18 for awhile now and it looks brand new still. (that one is a 24) My Strider is pretty much perfection, just like the other two.

I bought an SNG, bare bones, with tiger stripes. It had lock stick issues. I sent it in to Strider, with a money order for return shipping, and explicit instructions, and also a request to remove the coating. I cannot remember if I told them I would pay to have the coating removed or not. Being this was the most expensive knife I had bought up until that point, and I had had a few Sebenzas, Mnandi, PT's and had just bought an SMF before I sent the SNG, I wanted to know that my expensive knife was received. I believe I spoke with Josh once. I verified that he had the knife, and left it go for a month or so. I asked on Jerzee Devil, and was told that they were getting ready for the Brooklyn Knife show. I just wanted status on my knife. I live in Maryland, they are in California, wasn't really something I could walk in an ask about. So, I sent numerous emails and called the number on their website. I was told in an email the knife was on the way back, but didn't get it after a couple months.

A member on JD and here at BF assisted me. She found out what was going on, Mick himself actually removed the coating, asked why the hell didn't I buy one without coating (I'm guessing they're still pretty rare, I just jumped on an opportunity, but I can't blame him for his question) and he tuned it up for me. No special grinds etc, but he put a great edge on it, and stone washed the blade. No more lock stick etc. I got the knife back about 5 months after I sent it in.

I am indebted to the JD member, and Mick didn't have to remove the coating or sharpen it. I subsequently sold or traded most of my knives in the next couple months, the Strider blades were just too thick for me. I bought two SNG CCs a couple years ago, and after that, I bought an SNG CC and an SMF CC last year. Didn't keep them longer than a few months.

It is my belief that for the price, the knives should have better qc. The argument that these are for "professionals" is a cop out. Plain and simple. The CC models had better edges, still thick but nowhere near as bad as the regular models. The handles were not as sharp as those on the regular models, but still not comfortable for long periods.

I was eventually taken care of, no complaints there, and I wholeheartedly agree that Strider is a business, you do not want to develop a pen pal relationship with your customers. But, again, this was the most expensive knife I had purchased until then. I wanted to know what had happened to it. Did they get it, did they send it out. I sent in my large micarta Sebenza to Idaho. I called Fooj to see if they got it. I explained why I was calling. Fooj was cool about it. Two week turnaround time at most.

I love the design of the PT/SNG/SMF series. The SMF is their flagship design. I would be fine with the issues if these were priced comparably to Zero Tolerance knives. However, it is my belief that ZT has higher quality knives.

A little customer service goes a long way. I realize that they were getting ready for the Brooklyn show, and then the holidays came up. At least maintain lines of communication. On the other hand, Mick did customize my blade, when he didn't have to. Thankfully a third party stepped forward to help out.

I have owned two striders an SMF and an SNG. Neither one lived up to the quality I would expect from a knife of the price range. Both had some lock-up issues. Even tightening the pivot down did not eliminate the blade play - even when so tight you could barely open it. It is obvious that they have some QC issues as everyone always asks or comments about the lock-up etc when buying or selling. You can't get around that. Most people do not ask that about say a benchmade or spyderco even. And, those are much more inexpensive knives. Based on my experience many other companies with knives a 1/3 of the price of Striders have better QC and tolerances. Any way, I sold by the striders a while ago and decided it was not worth spinning the wheel to buy another. Yes, it can be a durable knife - but so are others for half the cost.

Just got in a SnG GG today from a Bf member and it is fantastic. Lockup, centering, great edge.

Of course it is in pieces now, thorough cleaning, applying sentry solutions to the blade and I am going to take the edge down to 20 degrees per side.
As mentioned in an earlier post the stonewash finish is fantastic. I dont anticipate ever having to send this in for anything.
If I do, I will wait two months, then send a paper letter asking to be contacted, sent using a signature service. :)

What does that mean?...

I've had a variety of knives from many different makers; in this pic there's only one knife that's pretty much flawless and an incredible value for the price given the blade steel used; I'll leave the guessing up to you... ;)

Truth is Strider crapped the bed here long ago, no matter what they turn out it will still be :thumbdn: with most. That's just the way it is.

Is it the, Strider?

I don't know if it is flawless, but the Buck/Mayo is a sweet little knife. They did a real nice job on those for the price.
