Fishing, and hunting reports (share yours)

Took this guy out this morning. We were hunting the same field, so he had to go. It’s about to get cccold here. New moon. Rut. Fingers crossed.

Here kitty, kitty! That camera takes quality shots Phill50 Phill50 .

Question for you deer hunters: how much emphasis do you put on taking out coyotes? I know many hunters shoot them all on sight. That one I posted the other day was the first one I’ve ever shot. But I’m on my own land for the first time ever this year.

I passed on another one this morning. Didn’t want to miss a deer opportunity. Hate making the noise with a rifle when it’s about time for the rut.

It is doubtful that you can have a serious impact on the population in any way just shooting one from time to time when you see them. Even if you start targeting them with calls and start hunting them at night, you likely won't do enough to their numbers to where the local deer population feels it one way or the other.

That said, for my own reasons, I kill every one of those bastards I am able to put a bullet in, arrow in, trap, snare or hit with the truck.

Coyotes play an important role in the ecosystem here in New Mexico.
We used to have them on our property every night and the rodent population was never a problem for us.
We don't often see or hear them these days and the ground squirrel / mouse population has sky rocketed.
I'm thinking about putting a water feature / small pond out on the property to get them back.

Squirrels…my old neighbor killed squirrels in his yard once or twice a week…for the entire 7 years he was my neighbor. We’re talking a 1 acre lot with a lake on one side. So a 3-sided 1 acre lot. He never ran out of squirrels!!

I told him it was like the weather: he was creating a low-pressure system and they just kept coming in. Like zombies.
