Fishing, and hunting reports (share yours)

Will you be hunting with hounds? I'm guessing that you'll be waiting until Sept-Oct to hunt? I killed a lion hunting over hounds quite a few years ago, up in the Jemez mountains in NM. Good luck on your hunt!
No, gonna scout out some areas (mountain and desert spots) and go from there. This is my first one and I'm learning as I go. :) Hounds definitely help the hunt to stand a greater chance of success though. That must have been fun in the Jemez. It's a pretty area there with lots of wildlife. They say Bigfoot has been sighted there and there's been some TV shows documenting it as well.

E Exzeph I go out bow hunting when I can. I have yet to be successful.
Yeah, so far I've just stuck to a regime of target practice with field archery mixed in.

I am thinkin the first hunt I'll try is turkey, as with recurve in particular, I'm led to believe most successful shots take place within 20-30 yd. And well I have to apprentice or something to try and learn to stalk bigger game properly, which you don't really have to do with turkey.

And frankly as much as they'd be a good candidate, wild hogs seem a little too tough to try with a recurve, may need to get into compound bows for those, haha.

E Exzeph target practice is everything to a successful hunt. I would recommend elevation changes, both up and down, as well as wind. The amount an arrow drifts in a mild wind still surprises me.

Turkey is a great start. Stalking is all about watching the wind, taking one's time on the approach, and significant luck.

Boar would be OK with recurve so long as the draw weight is up there, you have enough arrow shaft weight, and a sharp head. It's all about inertia.

Honestly, I just like walking about. I look at archery as a hike with a side quest haha.

E Exzeph , archery is a tough way to start out hunting so I commend you on that, especially going traditional! It’s easy to overwhelm yourself with this sport so just go slow. Are you ready for the adrenaline dump when you transition to the woods shooting at an actual animal from the target range?

This split moment will erase your brain completely on what you should be doing correct haha, so after all my years archery hunting and shooting lots of deer, my best advice is to learn to hold your form - after the shot. Just like in golf, you have to keep your proper form through the whole shot, follow through. Many people will want to watch the arrow fly to make sure they get a good hit but they don’t realize they’re lifting their head or dropping their arm, missing the shot completely or wounding the animal. A properly hit animal doesn’t travel far 99.9% of the time and I’ve seen many fall within eye site using my bow so just focus on hitting your spot, recovery comes 2nd.

Yeah, definitely what you're saying about the temptation to look, is something I largely overcame in my first year of shooting field and target archery -- and it's true you definitely jump quite a bit from where you intended to shoot if you look before the shoot completes!

I likewise suspect the emotional stakes and the tension of actually committing to a shot against a live animal might make it harder to execute what I'm learning. But I guess there's not much to do about that except try and read, watch, and learn all I can until I get to do it myself.

Archery season starts Oct 1 so it was time to re-fletch some arrows.

Haha, no helical twist, just a little offset! The top arrow’s cock vane shows the degree the best and yeah I’m shooting a compound (Bowtech Revolt X) plus I switched last season from mechanicals (grim reapers) to fixed (QAD Exodus). No real need to change, I’ve killed a lot of deer with the reapers and never had one issue but with a new bow I was looking for a reason to screw around I guess.

Proper tuning was achieved and broadheads shoot just like the field tips which led to some sliced off vanes in practice so a little repair was needed, I’ve just been lazy till now to do it and start shooting lol
