Flashlights

The light would need to be a lot shorter than what you've posted. Plus, it doesn't need to bling-bling, just perform...without hiccup or failure.

I'd only ditch rotary on a custom build if I had three levels of clicky output and momentary all at the same time...w/ double tap to medium and triple to low...I'd also entertain a double tap then hold for a ramping brightness level...like a button-control that does what a rotary dial does but with a bit more action form the user.

Thanks a lot man.
I too prefer the 18650.
The capacity is up to 3400mah
And the 16340/ cr123 are more light 700mah. Double the length, but more than quadruple the capacity. Even the super high drain cells are 2600mah and can put out some unreal amperage.
The 16340 light are a little more pocket belt friendly, but the performance, longevity of a 18650 can't be matched.

As far as tint...as long as there is no dark spots in the middle of the beam, no odd distortion at the edges and so on...I'm flexible. Too white and in a white-walled smallish room, you're wishing for IR gear instead. But out in the night....either/or.

It's easy to get good performance from 18650s, but I'd rather lug around a single cell light and a spare cell.

I think I have about a dozen of these for just that.

Yeah I have. But the new Cree xpl has the same footprint, much more power, and the exact same cri. The nichia has officially been trumped. I have one in a modified Fenix pd35, xpl triple and it one of my favorite lights. Clean wall of light, cri is amazing. Looks like the sun turned on. 2000lm of beautiful tint.

Just got this Elzetta Alpha. It's a one cell, 315 lumens little tactical/EDC light. It's modular and super tough. For now, I have it set up with the high/low cap, crenelated hood, and use a speed speed clip to attach to my belt.

Mm15vn=7500lm. Not a typo. Mtg2 x2 4x18650

Pd35 xpl triple 2000lm 1x18650

Custom ti xpg2 1x18650 700lm
Custom brass xml2 1x18650 1000lm

Sunwayman C20c xml2 dedomed 700lm 1x18650 if you can believe that! Huge cell in a tiny light

Jetbeam tcr2 xpg2 dedomed 700lm 1x16340

Jetbeam tcr10 xml2 dedomed 900lm 1xcr123/1x16340/1xAA/1x18650 with extension this light is extremely versatile.
Also has red/blue led and police strobe.

Sunwayman v11r 900lm infinity adjustable. Dedomed xml2 1xcr123/1x16340/1x14500 /1xAA with extension

Eagletac d25c dedomed xml2 900lm 1x16340/1xcr123

All company lights gave had substantial current boost and resistor mods, and most gave been dedomed to increase throw and beam intensity.

Cells

AA/14500/16340/18650

Here's the big ones.

The middle far right will literally throw a mile.

The rear right is 7500lm 5x xml2

Even the headlamp is 1200lm lol.

The middle rear is a btu super shocker.
4500lm and 400kcd. It's actually for sale.

The left rear is double it's usual length. It's running 8x 18650 4000lm Fenix tk75. 300kcd.
That one is nuts. Will run for weeks with that extension on low.

Middle left is a single emitter 4000lm mtg2. K40mvn

Middle front right toilet paper tube style is 1500lm from 4xAA!

I'm gonna have to guess that everyone at your house looks forward to power outages..........and yours will be the only house in the state that can be seen from space......

I think my neighbors think I'm an alien.
My house has 3w-6w lasers and thousands of lumens streaming from my Windows at night. Lol.

Power.......... outage?? ? I have solar chargers for lithium ion. I'm not familiar with this term.

I've had mixed experiences with most RCR123s...even some with a lot of love stopped taking a charge in an upsettingly small amount of time. I'm flexible but anything short of the CR123s and higher outputs on a single cell are difficult to safely and reliably achieve...it can get a little hot on long run times as I don't often run at the highest output for any time over an hour very often.

Needs throw...useful throw...but not overkill that would sacrifice a bit of flood to see what's in the periphery on the darkest nights. I'd like to be able to distinguish a skunk from a cat at 100 meters.

Hmm that's strange. I use efest 16340 imr cells. I've had some for 2 years with no problems at all. I've never had a lithium ion fail. And I have about 80 of them. I've soldered button tops on some, dropped them, maybe just lucky. But I get Panasonic, efest, Samsung cells only.

Well the higher output is nice to have, and like you said, you can always bump down a notch for long runs.

I can do 3a multiple levels.
On a xml2, that'll give just about 1000lm on high, and down to around 5 on low/moonlight.

Or I can do a triple xpl (my current favorite) triple nichia.
If you want more flood.

Dingle xpg2 if you want throw.
I can dedome for even more throw. Etc.

It's all your preferences.

I'll get a few different setups going and see what works best for you.

For an edc, I like small, floody, and the option to go crazy high, and crazy low, while being small enough to tote around, and of course super durable.

Some people like a thin beamed thrower for an edc.

To each their own. :)

I don't even run rechargeables any more, but am open to getting back in that game. They never lasted as long as throwaways and the benefits they provided weren't overwhelming obvious while using my lights.

Small size is key...go tiny with a lot of output and I'm interested.

Add an IR LED on a double-tap press-n-hold and a green laser at triple-tap press-n-hold and an awesome pocket tool comes to life...I'm kidding w/ ya a bit...but could be cool...reflectors could be a challenge though.:)

Haha never know.
Lasers are my specialty.

Here's just a few. I have tons of new designs.

I have a thread over at candle power forum.
"Tmack customs "
Has just about all my work.

These guys will burn from 15ft.
I mean burn. Newspaper up in flames.
Light a cigarette through glass. They are nuts.
A 1w can be seen from the International space station.
My strongest is 5.5w.
Will burst a pencil in flames instantly.
