Can a folding bushcraft knife compete with the fixed blade version?

Butch Hagedorn is a saddle maker who lives a few towns away. He doesn't have a storefront....Tom and I got him making sheaths for us a while back. Does great work. Will make a sheath for any knife. It would probably be better to contact him through me as I see him regularly...and he doesn't know all the knife jargon/lingo as well yet...and has only ever made sheaths for the 2 of us (mostly me the last few years..:D). You can send the folder to me if you need a specific fit, or just give me dimensions and he can make one for you. Shoot me an email.

You wont be disappointed with Butch's work, I have a couple sheaths from him. The sheaths are on my Tom Krein knives. Cant wait to get my folder Dan! Everyone have a Great Christmas!!!

.... just remember, anyone who needs to back out of their place in line for the folder, I'll be glad to step in :) no worries :D

Is there a target date? Just as long as I remain on the list, any date is cool.

The opened Bushcraft Folder will fit in the standard JRE sheath for the Bushcraft knife. ;)

I've updated the design - look back at the first post. One step closer to having this nailed down perfectly!

Sorry it's taken so long....but I've always believed that if it's not my best work, I don't want to make it / sell it.

Thanks for your patience!

Dan

It looks like the thumb slot is wider and there are fewer and shallower thumb notches, and the portion of the tang that engages the lock tab has been adjusted.
I'll gladly wait as long as it takes for Dan to be happy with the design.

The back of the handle is slightly "dropped" - more curve near the butt of the handle. The lanyard tube is a full 1/4" hole and centered in the back of the handle. Overall the handle is slightly "more accommodating" to larger hands. If you have small or med hands - you probably won't notice a thing. But those with wider palms will be very happy with the new profile.

I have been carrying this folder (on my belt, in a pocket sheath, jacket pocket, etc.) nearly every day for the last 9 months.

I have taken it camping, have used it in restaurants, in my own kitchen, in the backyard, in my shop, and so on.

I have had kids use it, gave it to a contractor buddy to use, have had it used by my scouts (read: not carefully), by non-knife-knuts, by women, by diehard folder guys...and so on.

I have carried it in church, in the car, in office settings, outdoors strapped to backpacks, etc.

I've run out of ways to test it....hahahaha

It is by far my favorite go-to knife.

The *only* downside I've found is that the weight of it and size of it with a sheath.....it's almost like carrying a small fixed blade since I don't make it with a clip (which I am still against)....and less like carrying a folding knife. Every once in a while I'll miss having a smaller pocket-knife. But that usually goes away quickly when I realize how much *more* I can do with this Bushcraft folder.

Interestingly...a few other companies/individuals have released their own take on scandi folder. Some of them do look pretty interesting...but none of them offer *everything* this one does.

I think the best thing this has going for it...is that it is essentially a framelock first. So, already, it's as tough/strong/reliable as any quality framelock out there. There's such a strong/compelling market for "flat" folders....that no-one has taken on putting a full-size handle over a framelock folder.

You will have to see it and hold it to believe it. With any luck, I'll be at the Blade Show this year and have a few to look at. It really does feel like a fixed blade as soon as it's open in your hand.

Sometimes....I'm *too* patient. And this is one of those times. I wanted to make 100% certain I was completely happy with it. I am cutting another prototype now and will have the latest version ready for viewing sometime in the next month or so. I won't need to test that one out much because the changes are very minor and just slight improvements over the current one.

I do appreciate your patience on this folks! It will be worth the wait!

I'm so glad I didn't discover this thread when the first post was made... as it is, the wait is unbearable and I didn't even get on the list!

Yeah the drop in the back is better. I have a Boar scandi folder and it has that and it makes it more comfortable.

Is "The List" that the fellows above are talking about posted somewhere? I've requested to be put on the list quite awhile ago and I'd like to check to see if I got on it. Chances are that I haven't (I haven't heard anything from anybody), but I'd like to make sure. Thanks.

!@#$%!@% I think the bear just ate me... Thanks bud! :D Can't wait to paper cut myself with the printed version of your knife :/
