Can a folding bushcraft knife compete with the fixed blade version?

Is "The List" that the fellows above are talking about posted somewhere? I've requested to be put on the list quite awhile ago and I'd like to check to see if I got on it. Chances are that I haven't (I haven't heard anything from anybody), but I'd like to make sure. Thanks.

I opened my list to all those who had signed up on the pre-order list. It closed pretty quickly (around 9 minutes). Unfortunately, it's taken a lot longer than I had expected to make this a reality.

There is good news on the horizon though, folks....I have 2 of what I hope will be the final prototypes before this goes to production. Really just a last minute test to make sure I have all my tooling set up right, expectations of production are correct, and so on.

Some might call it procrastination...and I'm sure that's in there somewhere...but to me it's getting things *just right*.

Here's a pic of what the folder parts look like coming from the waterjet guy. You might think - "Hey! They're already done!" But you would be mistaken. :D

Think of that as the "grunt work" being done and out of the way. I could accomplish the same thing doing it myself, but I really value repeatability/accuracy on the first step...and Leading Edge Fab does an incredible job. The very best in the knifemaking industry. All waterjet cutters are not alike. ;)

Daniel, I'm on your pre-order book already for this amazing Bushcraft Folder as I got a response from you confirming this... I applied through your website. How far away do you think you are from production? Just forecasting on my end.

Thanks, Rob Harris

I'm positively foaming at the mouth for this folder now. I hope I can get a shot at one of these this year, or I might go full rabid Dan!!!

Thanks for the reply. If and when one becomes available I'm willing to pay the bill! Thanks again.

Great news for you guys that have been waiting sooooo patiently!!!

The last set of prototypes is officially in the works now. Check out the pic. I'll try to post more updates/pics as I progress through the process making them. I'm about 30% done with these so far and it's going GREAT - just as planned. I'm super excited to finally have this down. Knock on wood...these will turn out great and I'll be ready-to-roll by the end of the month.

just remember - I want this done as much as you guys do! :D :p  :D

I'm curious, how is the old prototype holding up? You've been beating on it for what, a year now?
That should be a pretty thorough field trial, and I'm wondering what you've learned so far.

I have it on my belt right now, in fact....and have had it nearly every day (coming up on 18 months soon). No blade play. No lockbar damage. Just mostly scuff marks on the flats and I have had to resharpen it 3 times. I have taken it apart and put it back together a dozen times. No droop, tip is still centered, etc.

Like I said in post #314...It is sizeable and heavy compared to other tactical folders. That said, this prototype only weighs in at 5.8 oz. Less than a regular Bushcraft knife (average 6.5-7.5oz) but understandable considering that there's no steel tang. It will feel slightly lighter and faster compared to your other ~9" long fixed blade knives...and be a heckuva lot cooler to "whip out". :D

I've put so much thought and effort into this, I can barely remember all the little changes I've made. There's even been minor changes to make the production process easier (without sacrificing ergonomics or quality, of course)...and other behind-the-scenes stuff. I may make a video at some point to show the entire process...just too much going on right now. :p

I definitely prefer this with a short lanyard fob attached to it - makes it much easier to get out of the sheath and doesn't get in the way during use. I might offer that as an upgrade/option...we'll see.

I can't say enough good about this steel and grind combination. I have made 1500+ knives with scandi grinds and nearly all of them out of 3V steel. The scandi grind on this steel is a match made in heaven. So, why would it perform any differently as a folding knife? And it's true...it's the same. Cuts wood very nicely, rips through cardboard/rope without skating, and needs very little sharpening (best if honed with fine stones or simply stropped).

Something I *have* learned along the way is that the opening between the liners underneath needs a lot of rounding on the inside to make it comfortable. And even with that, you'll definitely *feel* the gap between the liners during hard carving, etc. There's simply no way around it, so I've learned to adapt and anticipate when that might be an issue. I have guaranteed the knife with a "use it for anything except heavy batoning" warranty. And yes, you can *drill* with it. That said, anyone who has ever used a folding knife to pry or drill deeply knows that failure is waiting just around the corner for them. Use your head, accept it and adapt - and you'll do great!

More drilling and milling has taken place. Update time!
