French regional knives...

Wow I think I was not clear in my explanation o_O:(

Why horn handle needs oil : only because with the time and our dry and warm houses the material dries, the horn looses its homogeneity, and you can see the different layers stand out from each other.

Why you have not to put oil on the axis, never "oil de joints" :D ON A FRICTION FOLDER : because on a simple friction knife the only security you have is the hard friction. If you put some oil on the axis the friction we'll be very soft and your knife we'll not stay open or closed .

Please feel free to say me if something is not clear :)

I was thinking of slipjoints, not friction.

I see that you're both right, and I get it now. Thank you.

Thanks for the clarification.

Well, I went and ordered one. I can return it if it isn't right.
It has "Made in France" on a sticker instead of in a stamp, and it has a Parapluie umbrella stamped in front of "Le Thiers".

If it looks like this it is ok, The umbrella is the symbol of parapluie à l'épreuve a subsidiary of Thérias, who produce no more folders.

edit It has been bought by Degrenne group who closed the Thiers premises last may.
See the 1984 catalogue

Great! It looks like the top one. (Except in bois d'amourette) Wood of a small lover.:D I had to look it up, it's snakewood, in this context.
Thank you, Jolipapa.

You're welcome! These are good no frills knives . BTW, an amourette is a summer love. :)
(in the kitchen it is also beef, lamb or veal spinal cord :D)

Talkin' 'bout amourette, this one was once famous. :)
My French is so good, he could be singing about snakewood, for all I know.
My Parapluie le Thiers should get here tomorrow.
If I've gleaned my history correctly, this pattern goes back only to 1994, when the modern Thiers Cutlery Guild first laid down the law?
