Gec #38 whittler

After seeing these, I ran right out and purchased one online. Great looking pattern, can't wait to get mine in hand!

Snapped a few pictures of the new 38 Whittler, which is becoming a fast favorite. Really like the details on this one with the rat tail bolsters, all steel construction, federal shield, and peachseed jigging!

Nice photos, P&G. It's a beautiful knife that looks just like the oldies... with one difference. The coping blade doesn't have a corner on the back. Whoever shaped the coping blades was wearing his thinking cap and rounded it off so it wouldn't jab you. That's something that I would have done if they hadn't.

This is my Che Chen Rosewood Grinling Whittler. Like others have stated, the main blade has a pull of about 7 with a cam action, the secondary blades have a pull of 3 or 4 with half-stops. I'd rate the knife overall a 9. It takes skill to line up the blades in such a tight slot, and skill to build the wedge between the springs. The only detraction is that my secondary blades hit the liner in the closed position. This has not been enough to leave blade rub marks with my limited opening/closing of the blades. If I had to have blade rub, I'd prefer it to be in this direction rather than inward and rubbing against the main blade. I can always push the blade inward with the nail nick when opening and closing the knife to avoid rub--but I'd have to remember to do that and be careful.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this knife and its build quality.

Here is my contribution. Absolutely loved the dark color of the stag as well as the deep groove on each side. I actually prefer the pile side but they are very well matched. Hope to get some better outdoor pics tomorrow. Worth mentioning is the fact that this knife has as thin a grind and the finest tip I have seen on any GEC clip point blade and rivaling their wharnies in this regard. The pen and coping blades possess this same trait. Great action that I would rate more of a 6 pull on the main. No clearance issues at all with no rub but it took a while to build confidence enough to let her fall shut as there is not much room between the secondaries for the main the nest. Beautiful work all around and this pattern is speaking to me loudly

Mine came in today. I kind of liked the idea of a whittler with wood handles. It really looks nice and seems to be super sharp right out of the tube. It's not nearly as heavy as I thought it would be. Main pull is 6 or maybe 7, other two blades are very light maybe a 3. Overall, a very well executed knife that I'll be happy to put to work.

Great looking 38's guys! The stag and woods look awesome.

I'm finding that I baby the blades home to defer the paranoia of blade rub. That is a tight nest of blades!

those are some really special looking knives. Convinced me it is one of those patterns I just have to have. The red-bone with very fine jigging was my choice, (though the green tidioute was also very nice looking).

The jigging on the federal shielded and OKCA club knife beaver shielded models is the big deal in my book! Very fine/smaller jig pattern, perfectly matching the size of the knife.

I couldn't resist the neptune! I'm surprised by that for some reason, just had to have it.:D
It's not like I've never bought a knife I didn't need.:o

That Neptune acrylic is really good looking stuff, haven't seen many pictures of it show up yet. I have been having a hard time talking myself out of looking for one of those.

I loved the ebony so much I really wanted one of the American Whittler Chestnut Peachseed, but hesitated a bit too long. Oh well, I was lucky to get this Vintage example of the pattern off the big auction site instead. Its a Schrade Walden and looks to possibly be the inspiration for the GEC's. Excuse the poor quality pics (dealer's pics). I'll share better pics once I have it in hand.

All these pictures and accounts are very welcome but they're making my wait for the Tidioute into some ordeal!
Tracking says it left Michigan on 26th March, then to Chicago, then Munich, then Istambul(??) then Helsinki where customs has been sitting on it since 5th April. :grumpy: They sent me a letter for import duty I paid on-line on Friday but it's still not here, aaargghhh! Wednesday is Whittler Day, must be:confused::eek:

Man, that stag version is SO appealing, Derrick!:thumbup:
But as Perry noted above, the jigging pattern on the jigged bone versions is simply outstanding!!
