GEC 68 Pony Jack 2021

I've seen it done (and done it myself) with a 66 Serpentine Jack... I think the straight frame would be better for it.

Jo, I think your were talking about the pull weight in a different thread? Forgive me if not. But, as I recall, the original run off ponies from years ago had pretty stout springs. Nice low sunken joints, too, so more comfy in hand in use than #15 jacks.

yes, my #68 Pony is from 2013 and the #68 White Owl from 2011 and both came with pretty weak springs.

Im glad this is next, this is a pattern ive often considered and wanted for a blade delete to make a smaller equal ends than the 35 which i believe the blade is canted to allow for the secondary.

On the 68 white owl, cigar, single spring, double blade.....I believe they were offset ground first and then swedged to allow passage without a crink. The equal end pen single spring knives will have thiner blades then the same pattern as a jack or moose configuration. But yes, a secondary delete will make a nice strong user knife on this run.

I just checked out my 35 and my White Owl from the very first run. I don't have a photo, but the blades are offset ground and, while not crinked, they are canted, as in one side is ground straight and the other side ground at a different angle to allow the secondary to sit in the well without touching.

My Pony Jack has a very nice pull and snap, but the White Owl is a bit mushy.

It should be noted that the Pony Jack is main and pen on the same side, while the White Owl is a single spring, main and pen opposite end.

I'll do my best to get side by side photos of the 35 and 68 together tomorrow. The 68 is significantly smaller than the 35. Even smaller than the 15, but it qualifies for the 'little big knife' moniker. The Pony Jack is on my short list of 'never sell' knives!

Curious to see if it has the long pulls this time. My guess is no, because Bill Howard typically won't run the exact same version twice.

At first I was meh on this pattern. Now after all the photos from prior years I want one. Seems to happen frequently. Still wish I didn’t pass on the 38 whittler this year. Can’t have them all.

Comparison of the 68 Pony Jack with a 15. I stand corrected, they are nearly the same size but the 68 feels a tad smaller due to the fact that that the handle on the 15 has a taper to it, making the butt end wider.

Alongside a 35

My White Owl is currently residing in its tube and I didn't want to disturb it, after all, we are discussing the Pony Jack here! The reason I said earlier that I doubt the new run will have a long pull is because the one pictured here has that and is also an all steel model. But, who knows, maybe the only difference will be that the new one will have a pen behind the main, rather than in front. GEC has done such a thing in the past!

Trivia time for those who may not know..... the 68 pattern is an equal end, also called a cigar. The White Owl name comes from an old brand of cigars. Not sure where Pony Jack came from, other than it is a somewhat small jack knife. At any rate, I hope all who wants one can make it happen and actually get one!

What's more is that all the single spring 2 bladed equal end cigars are cigar related.

I have never noticed that. Interested. They should have done that with all of the cigar models. I always thought the 54 Big Jack was an odd name haha

I might try to grab a pony jack to see if I like the pattern. Based on looks alone I have a feeling I'll still prefer the 15 frame over it.

Awesome, thank you for the side by side with the 15. I love the looks of the pony jack, but think it is just too small for where I have decided my sweet spot is. This pic may have saved me a little time and money!

Another shot of a 35 whose frame houses the Churchill and Forum Knife 2016 with a 68 White Owl. The Pony Jack is the same size but thicker than the White Owl or Churchill due to its 2 springs layout.

I personally prefer two bladed knives to have seperate springs. I know some like a thinner knife but it's never bothered me that much, but blade rub drives me up the wall.

Uh uh. slant bolsters are the business :)

After seeing all the pictures of these I'm thinking I'll like this better than the 86 Angus. Fingers crossed I snag one... either that or hopefully someone wants to swap 🤣
But these look good, I was considered by the comparison picture with the 15 because it looks so thin, but I'm thinking it'll be more than fine in person.
