GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

I was looking through the thread and found this picture.

And here it is just shy of 8 months later.

Thanks, and ditto!

That one is coming along nicely.

The micarta 77s really came out great!(but then again they all did)
The satin bolsters really turned out nice too.

So I have been curious as to why the different runs of sawcut red bone age differently? Was it the strength of the dye, batch of bone, or...?
I'm also surprised we don't see more of the smooth autumn gold bone around. I hope they aren't all stored up in safes around the world. The 2 blade run really turned out phenomenal, and I hope the folks at GEC can find a way to mimick the depth and variation again.

Just a theory, but from my observations I think the old sawcut bone on these was dyed red first. Then the dark accent was added on afterwards to make it look that deep dark (it's only in the sawcut textured area if you'll notice, the smooth parts are lighter even on new ones).

With time in the pocket perspiration and handling wears/washes it away is my guess, leaving the red bone from Step One.

That makes sense.

Thanks TMD87 : The Patina is a result of cutting Apples and Rhubarb . The Rhubarb will really do it. And now we are doing radishes too.
Good luck on finding one !!! This is my first 77 Barlow and there have been some others since .

Harry, I was fortunate enough to find a new in tube micarta SB spear! Should be here around Monday or Tuesday. I will post up some pictures when I get it. It will pair up nicely with my #18 and #25.

That is some pretty good news TMD !!! I trust that you will show pictures after you get it !! The unofficial rule is : No Picture , It Didn't Happen !!! I think you will find it to fit you hands better than the 18 or 25 .

Im looking forward to having an opportunity to buy my first #77 Barlow this year. Anyone hear anything new on when the 77s will be getting released??

I love the GEC Barlows, but can't afford them. I would prefer to have GEC, Northwoods, Queen, etc. but I could only afford to buy a Boker Plus manufactured in China. I really can't complain, but it should would be nice. (I am not really looking at my Boker with contempt, as the 440C steel seems to be working out rather well).

Those GEC Barlows are downright pretty! Doggone, your hides! ;) :p

Just wait until I can afford my James River Armory "Rockola" M1 Carbine in October. Then I'll have my revenge! :p :D

I love field corn (why should the black bears have all the fun? :)). Give me some creamed field corn, purple hull peas and okra... and well, kings do not eat better! You have to catch field corn at just the right time... really about a 3-day window. Yesterday, we pulled, cut, shucked, shaved, blanched, bagged, and froze a couple hundred ears. To achieve the best creamed corn requires technique and a sharp knife... shaving the very tips of the kernals first and gradually shaving down to the cob. My trusty Barlow was up to task! I didn't get a pic of the shaving... we were up to our elbows in kernal bits, corn juice/starch and it just didn't occur to me to stop and get a picture. I did, however, remember to take a pic earlier.
