GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

Erik,

Same here. The 77 Barlow has completely owned my RFP for a year and a half now. The red sawcut went back to GEC for a new mark side scale after a drop on my tile floor on July 4th ( ). The african blackwood sheepfoot 77 immediately stepped up to assume the role. The 77 Barlow just "fits me". I like it's lines, size and dimensions. Ever since it came into my life all others fell to the wayside as far as the #1 right front pocket spot. A few others rotate through as #2, but nothing replaces the 77 Barlow.

That is great to hear that you are replacing the scale with more red bone. I'm sure it will take a while to get used to the differences between scales, though.

I thought a lot about what path to take on the scales... Go with something different or stay with old red sawcut?? I decided to stay with it as it came. GEC may or may not be able to match the original color, so that's yet to be determined. I guess if they can't, it may end up a different color, but I do love their sawcut bone. It will be a month or so yet until it's finished but I'll keep it's progress posted.

Love this blade. Spent a weekend in Virginia City, Nevada. Of course the #77 clip had to come with me.

Thanks, Harry! Hard to believe 5 months have already gone by!

My impression of the 77 Barlows is : If you are gonna have a Barlow , it aught to be a 77

The 77 definitely impresses!

Here's an update after slicing the last of this season's Georgia peaches...

This has been my go to knife since getting it almost a year ago. I've been through periods where it didnt see use for weeks at a time, but inevitably the flavor of the week knife got old and this one hopped back into my pocket. I chose the smooth ivory bone covers specifically because I love the way they age, and all that consistent carrying and fondling is starting to pay off. The bone has turned a nice mellow color. The original polish on the bone has been replaced with a nice dull look filled with scuffs, scratches, and over all character. The pile side bone has been cracked(which thankfully seemed to stabilize). This knife has been on top of mountains, in creeks and river, and has seen countless miles on trails. It has put in a ton of hours on the job site as a go to tool. It is hard to believe that I could be so attached to a silly little object like a knife.
This knife has went from being just another sweet new knife to being a permanent piece in my collection.

Thank you, Al!
All these red bones are aging really nicely too.

I worked at a produce stand a few years back unloading a truck, and I probably ate my weight in GA peaches! I practically lived off those things and boiled peanuts.

It looks good to me.

I don't currently have any micarta with that coloration; I think it would make a fine addition to the pattern.

Is it still canvas based? If not, what is the substrate?

Wish I would of ordered one. It's what I had in mind. As I recall it's bone linen and to me that's the color I was thinking of. I like the texture too.

I agree. Looks very cool to me and should patina as quickly as the steel:thumbup: Good choice, let's do this!!;)

I like it. More textured look than I would have thought from linen micarta, but looks good.

Is that from the same source?
