GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

Can you give any more details on the stain marker you used? Brand/ color? Does the stain rub off or did it penetrate the bone? I really like that color.

Thanks for these EO making details. I have the Clip blade and having taken a closer look i don't think an EO notch would suit this knife and because the clip slopes downward quite a bit, it still might not be pinchable.
But, for the guys with the Sheepsfoot blade you could open up an EO Notching business.
I wonder if after seeing your results Mike might order a run of the Sheepsfoot with an EO notch because it really does look like it belongs there.

Bigbiscuit and Paul pretty much nailed it on the how-to. Its easier than it looks! but the key is to use a round sanding drum if some sort to get your start and start conservatively before going wider and deeper. I do tend to agree with you that EO notches really make more sense for Sheepsfoot and spear points. The only EO's I've seen that were clips were on Grand Daddy Barlows and the notch was cut about midway down the handle rather than at the tip. I'm sure there plenty other examples, but these seem to be the more iconic offerings. Whether or not Mike will offer them on a run ? I have a feeling he will. They were such a hit on the 15 EO scouts I sort of figured "whats good for the goose..."

Sean, I have a few from a couple of different companies but the ones I used were from Gaurdsman.

There's another Brand called "Mohawk" that make colored wood fill, wood colored crayons and the markers themselves.

For me it's like staining a raw door---apply, wait only a few minutes, wipe off the excess. It does penetrate each time. I used the "Medium" out of the three...Light, medium and dark.

You'll see the excess wipe off onto a terry cloth rag, then it eventually stops coming off. Once you achieve the desired color it stays that color:thumbup: I've done this on Stag as well as bone and even in the most humid of days it has never come off or left stain on my pockets, hands, pants etc...

We owned a Family Furniture store for years and have used them for as long as I can remember...no memory comments please:D

Is this the Dremel sanding drum that people have been using?

Thanks Paul for the tip on the markers. The dye job you did is beautiful. Wow.

and yes Maverick that is the very one.

This thread has drifted way off the subject of "the knives". It's OK to discuss what you might like to see in another release but "how to's" don't belong in this forum. I know we see the occasional reference, that's OK, but this is turning into a full blown discussion.

Let's get it back on track, please.

Well Lemmy threw "Caution" to the wind so I figured, why not. I followed suit. :D
I had already filed the kick down. I really like this mod. Much more pinchable and as Lemmy stated previously, the ring finger just drops right in to give a better grip.
Not the best pics. I'll try to get some better ones tomorrow in the light of day. Thanks for the inspiration Lemmy.

Now you guys are making me wish I owned a sheep! Clips dont look good with EO notches. Notice you never see that!

All you guys modding the knives are very, very bold! Good job on your mods.

Here's what I'm carrying today...

Even though I may attempt the fantastic mod on my Ebony Blackwood sheepsfoot, I will get back on track as Gary suggested by reposting my ill timed posting of my final two Barlows. :)

My last two to show.
The Autumn Antique Bone came out better than I ever could have anticipated.
-love the Blackwood mod-

Wow, great work on the notches, Paul!:thumbup:
Perry

Thanks Perry, I owe it all to Lemmy:thumbup:

Paul, I love what you did with the color! Will it be permanent? Or will it rub off with time? I agree, the Old Tan really was New Yellow. I really like your burnt yellow!

Thanks as well Scott, sent you a pm:)

That looks great Paul! I like it a darker "antique" look....you nailed it!:thumbup:

Thanks Mark---It kinda has an old Camillus look to it---or at least an old Camillus I have:thumbup:

Fantastic work to all. Wow! Here's mine. Keeping it completely stock, mostly because I'm not bold enough to try a mod.

I'm not a fan of EOs, to me they spoil the lines and the ergos, but Paul, that darkened sawcut is simply a terrific color and a big improvement.
