GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

Almost Size 7:

I've been extremely happy with my autumn bone sheepfoot and tan clip, but the red sheepfoot seems to be the most sought after. I haven't seen many, if any, for sale/trade after the initial release.

This is remarkable considering the knives it has displaced. You have some beautiful ebony knives! Is it the sheepfoot blade, the weight and size, the shape of the handles? What do you like so much about the Northfield Barlow?

Gosh, I guess it's several factors... I love the sheepfoot blade yes. I also love African Blackwood - it's glassy smooth texture and incredibly fine/dense grain is just beautiful. The size and it's slim profile as a single blade. The Barlow pattern itself has always been a huge favorite of mine. My other favorite is the Stockman pattern, I'll never be without one (or a few!) of those...

I guess all in all the 77 Barlow is a perfect everyday carry for me. When I know I've got some hard work to do the large Case Stockman will take the place of the Peanut. I also always have a Vic Farmer or Pioneer in a sheath on my belt. They're all fine/precision tools and each sort of has a range of purpose to it (the 6375 Stockman and Sodbuster are my down n dirty hard-use knives for example). For my needs the Peanut is an excellent light-duty every day companion to a larger 3.5" to 4" folder. The 77 Barlow fits my normal day to day casual use needs. It rides in the RF pocket unnoticed and it's sheepfoot blade is strong. It's straight edge is easily kept stupid-sharp.

You've sold me, AZranchman! If only there was a 77 Barlow store around here. Maybe we will get another run of 'em someday. [emoji57]

Hey guys I just received a beautiful 77 clip in old tan. I love everything about it but the pull is really strong. Any advice on how to lighten it up would be appreciated!

Flush the joint well with mineral oil and work the blade open and closed a few dozen times. Occasionally it's gritty fine debris from the manufacturing process that causes this. That may resolve it.

Another way the old timers did it is to open the blade partially til the spring is at it's maximum point. Set the knife in a safe place in this position for a few days and that can lessen the strength of the pull.

I've done both of those things with knives, and sometimes it works. But occasionally, GEC sends one out that has a pull of 10 out of 10. It's just made too tight. Then you have to send it back or find a pro with enough experience to trust with your new knife. I think it's a quick fix. But I wouldn't want to try it myself.

I have 2 of the 77 Barlows with stag handles. (But no Blackwood. [emoji17]) My stags came with a pull of 8-9. With time that came down to a 7-8.

I need to know where to get one

Hey, rh. Upgrade your account and we can send you messages. Don't know if anyone responded to your post, but... The 77 Northfield Barlow comes from Mike Latham at collectorknives.net. But this thread is about the knives, not about how to buy them.

Every single day 24/7 since it arrived here over two months ago... This sheepfoot 77 in African Blackwood now OWNS the #1 spot in my pocket. Peanut in the watch pocket of course.

Over the last couple of years, Jeff has shown off some very special knives with Ebony or Blackwood covers, including TC Barlows, a Stockman, and I think a couple of others perhaps. Was there an EO 85 too? So I asked him why this one gets all the love over the past couple of months...

When the last run of 77 Barlows came out, I spent my allowance on the stag, and missed out on the rest. But a neighbor on the other side of the mountain noticed our conversation here, and sent me this as a gift, so that I could see for myself!

And seeing is believing! Although in this case, it is really important to actually get your hands on one. The Blackwood is really a dark chocolate brown, and is sanded on the edges to give the handle a smooth and finished look. I think that's called "radiused." Instead of thicker covers with sharp edges, the wood just tapers down to the handle, giving it a worn feel without any rough spots. This makes it feel better in the hand, and then disappear into the pocket where its larger size is not so notable because of the thinness.

The blade and handle are big enough to get some work done! The 77 frame fits my hands better than the smaller patterns. And I am personally fond of the sheepfoot blade.

This knife is a winner, and I am thrilled to have it in my pocket today! The knife alone is terrific. But the generosity of Shawn (GBPacker) made my day and my week! :D

Good wrapup Scott. I agree on all points about the Blackwood and it's ergonomics. I just added my own twist.

Nice mod, Bob! I love your EOs! I'm keeping my Northfield Barlow the way it came to me, but you do make me look at some of my other knives and wonder...

Thanks to a kind member here I was able to get a Blackwood NF barlow, I then did a BigBiscuit inspired EO mod as well. This is a GREAT KNIFE!! It just fits in my hand perfectly.
I used mustard and vinegar to form a patina, but I think my blade is much dirtier than a lot of others here. How do you keep the blade so clean?
Great pics everyone. I check this thread often.

Nice job on the EO mod. My knife pictured above is a safe queen for now as I have another that gets used. That's why it looks pristene.

Not even the lack of a caplifter or EO notch can keep this Northfield Barlow out of my pocket. (I suppose I could put a Radio Jack or SAK in my other pocket. After all You Only Live Once.)

Those are pomegranate blossoms in the background. The neighbor's tree is growing over the fence. So later this summer I will put this Barlow to work on my share of the pomegranates!

That's awesome! Many kudos to GBPacker for such a magnificent gift! Congrats on your AB 77 :) - mine has not left my pocket for even a single day since it arrived in the mail in mid Feb. It's incredibly pocketable and feels great in hand.

Love those covers, makes it smooth and sleek. My stag clip 77 remains new in tube since I can't bear to use it but perhaps one of these days..
