GEC #77 Medium Barlow Impressions

Shipping software sends shipping notice when I print the labels, even though the label shows a ship date of 9/25.
Sorry folks, all are going out 9/25 - false alarm.

I noticed that you listed the factory effort for the two-bladed barlows as a 9, and an 8 for the single-bladed barlows. Is this because GEC did a better job with the two-bladed ones than the singles, or because two-bladed knives are more difficult to pull off and GEC managed the same level of quality found on their single-bladed knives on the two-bladed ones?

To me an "8" is everything you would expect it to be. But I really felt like they did a great job on the 2blade models to get them in such a tight package and with no rubbing the liners.

Ah, makes me wish i'd saved for a 2 blade as well as the single blade version. But having had a Northwoods Madison 2 blade, and found it just too much knife for the pocket (excellent in all respects, just more knife than I'd expected) I was hesitant about the 2 blade, even on the 77 frame, as I wanted something slimmer as well as smaller, so I went with the ivory bone single spear blade. Which I'm sure I will be very happy with. But that African Blackwood looks really nice.

Mike - Well done on these sir. Each one is incredible and a homerun, imo. I would not doubt if these became an instant classic and sought after for years. Glad I was around to grab a couple.

Thank you

Whew...just selected the 1B stag I wanted. That was tough!
So many choices only thing that would have made it crazier would be a clock that beeps as the seconds go down.

Thanks Mike for giving us the option to select like that...pretty neat idea.

I'll have to remember this for next time. The ability to select (i'm guessing in the order you preordered) the stag knives is a great idea. truely the only thing that held me back on them. Well still got a smooth white bone on the way, which i'm totally stoked for. Next time stag.

Nice collection Luger, I see your saw cut doesn't sit around in it's tube.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but seems like smooth ivory bone has not been used much in 77 barlow frame? I looked around a bit and didn't see much in the smooth ivory bone... compared to stag and red saw cut.

Just wish I would have saved the picture because now I can't see the knife I selected until it gets here. As soon as I selected stag D I started second guessing. Whoever got stag A its a nice one!

^ the stag is Sambar Stag. Check them out...not your typical whitetail...

I have the single blades in micarta, blackwood and stag heading my way soon. Woohooo!

I don't care for stag for one reason, many examples I've had had asymmetrical covers...one side fatter than the other; so I ask, will the stag covers here match up insofar as symmetry?

For those who pre-ordered, we were given photos of available knives to choose from with one angle that let you get an idea of symmetry. If there are any that happen to be left, perhaps the same photos will be available.

I do not think there will be any left.

From what I saw, almost all stag covers were symmetrical. Extrapolating, I'd say the stag on this run is top quality. I assume Mike will allow similar selection for remaining ones, and you can always politely request for a particular symmetry (convex, hour-glass, thin, and so on).

Of all covers, I love stag the most. Since finances do not permit that, I settle for bone or wood. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed.

From what I know, these are all "sambar" stag, found in India. I may be wrong though.

Thanks for clearing that up. I have recieved a couple "8"s from you and have been very happy with them.

I had always thought that the "Pull effort" was a rating with 1 being that it practically fell open and that a 10 was a nail breaker. You are saying it is related to the "quality" of the pull rather than the amount of effort required?

What I am referring to is the "Factory Effort" found at the bottom of the list of information and listed at the top in the product description. For example, the two-bladed ivory bone description reads:

"This is the Great Eastern Cutlery Northfield Yankee Medium Barlow, has Smooth Ivory Bone handles and Steel liners. The blade steel is 1095 and finish is Satin.

*Our opinion: The pull is a 7. The GEC effort on this run as compared to their entire catalog is 9."
