GEC new #43 pattern, who’s excited?

Welcome to Oregon my Oregon Trapper:)
Well opened mine up and love the pattern! And how big it is !
Blade is dead centered with no wobble , excellent walk and talk , finish not so great on covers.
The frontier Bone on this particular one not digging it to much . It’s looks as if the dark brown topping it’s painted or brushed on . On the non show side it’s actually looks and feels like a portion of the “paint ?” Is chipping or and has chipped off and can see and feel the edge all around that area . Really takes away from a otherwise really nice knife . I’ve had relatively good luck with mike & CK knifes but unfortunately this will receive no praise because of the above mentioned area lol . It makes me wonder if it will start chipping in other areas . Literally looks like some type of paint or coating was brushed on
Cool knife very poor Frontier bones covers . I’ll keep it though and maybe try blending in the paint chips with some sandpaper to take off the deep edges between the light and dark “coatings “ a little disappointed with GEC on these particular covers . Again hope it’s not a indicator that it will start doing that In other areas after time .
I think they needed to let the paint dry longer

And the beautiful paint job ;)

I would of thought they might dye it not use a stain/paint coating .
Looks and feels like someone picked it off with there finger nail lol . Really is a shame because it’s a really nice knife . But that coating really makes it look and feel like a cheap and poor made knife .

I am sorry that you do not like the texture of the Pioneer Bone . I do not have any Pioneer Bone , but what you are describing is what I think I would really like about it . I think yours looks great . The only reason I did not order one is because it is Tidioute and not Northfield . I will say that you have posted some great pics my friend .

Get some patina on that blade and it will look a lot better. It seems that the frontier bone has more variation than any of the others from GEC.

Thank you Harry :) much appreciated Sir.
For me it reminds me of and or is paint chipping off the light color bone . If it were blended but the deep edges were the coating was picked off looks really cheep imo .
I’m going to try sanding to blend it in . If that doesn’t work might use a paint stripper to remove the coating on the bone . It’s almost Like they didn’t let it dry long enough or there wasn’t enough Hardner in it .

Mine feels and looks dyed? Makes me wonder if it’s actually chipped bone on your not a coating being chipped? I don’t think gec paints them do they?

I didn’t think so either, I would wager that is character in the bone, texture. Like Harry that actually appeals to me : )

I'm in for cocobolo.

In for Natural Canvas Micarta. Totally off topic question, but, I have a French Bulldog named Butch and I see your avatar looks like a Frenchie? Is that a Frenchie named Butch? Sorry fellas

It's Johnny Quest's dog Bandit, from the old cartoon. Picked it for my avatar on a motorcycle forum when I was riding a Suzuki 1200 Bandit.
Butch was a nickname I picked up in the USAF. It resulted from the results of beer consumption and a self-administered haircut.

Great choice !

If it bothered me with the "chips" in the bone, I would sand it like you said.
It also seems like a great light color to dye yourself. However it is that people home dye bone.

If it were chips in the bone it wouldn’t bother me . But the paint or colored varnish chipping does . Just being that it’s coated with something and painted or brushed on just kills the otherwise nice quailty of this knife . If it’s not some coating they brushed or sprayed on I’d be very surprised .

Stage one in blending the chips . Have it smooth to the touch now . Looks better but far from what I like but looks more natural now .

Those who have a 43 now, how does it compare to the 74 in hand and in action?

Almost canceled my Cocobolo 43 reserve but hopefully it won’t have painted covers lol .
Decided to take my chances ... hoping it’s not another second .

If I remember correctly the 74 was the mustang correct? The 43 feels better in hand because it’s bigger and seems to really fill the hands nicely . Action is beautiful on the 43 . You can pinch open and feels like 5 to 6 pull . The bigger blade I’m sure helps with leverage when opening .

View attachment 855505 View attachment 855506 Received my #43 frontier bone last night. Fit and finish is outstanding! Pull is about a 6 or 7 I think it would be a 10 on a small knife. I think the big blade gives you more leverage so it seems easier to open. Love the frontier bone and how both sides are different. Kinda makes my 78 feel like a peanut:eek: also it’s pinchable:cool::D
That frontier Bone looks much better with a much lighter coating on the bone and should wear nicely

I hear ya the post office can be very good or not so very good lol . My fingers are crossed for you .
Getting ready to open mine up not to rub it in or anything :p:)
Well Im still waiting. I may just have to order from another dealer next time. I just don't need or want the stress of having to wait and wonder if and when the US post office will get here when they say they will.
