GEC Radio Knife

I remember seeing pictures of "radio" knives that were not unlike the TL-29, with a wire stripper/screwdriver blade. Charlie showed a photo of an old Schrade in the other Radio knife thread that is absolutely beautiful, but I don't know if it was marketed as a radio knife at the time.

Given my experience with electronics, a bottle opener would have been quite welcome after working on some circuit boards, especially oscillator/PLL circuits :D

I was just getting ready to link that thread Bob. Bob W. should be able to find the answer to his question in that thread.

Perhaps people in older times would sit back in a comfy chair, turn on the radio, and pull out the bottle opener on their knife to open a beer?

I dunno. Just speculation.

I love that <DE> knife in post #226. But other than taking a picture of a knife and radio together, I'm still missing the connection.

Probably some inside joke or obscure reference, like the Pemberton and Ben Hogan names.

Why is this product called a Radio Knife? Bottle openers and radios?

This type of knife seemed to have been a choice advertising piece for radio supply and service companies, being useful when a slot/wedge screwdriver was one of few tools you needed to do simple service on a radio.
With thanks to Barry:

mine arrived today (antique yellow jigged bone), for Christmas, there is not much point in taking pictures, as they will look the same as all the others, but after being agnostic about the boy's knife for a year, in spite of all the raving on this forum about them, I can now call myself a convert. This knife is just a perfect size, the rounded jigged bone scales feel great in the hand, and the blade grinds were the first from GEC that almost needed no work. I was happy that I only needed a few strokes on the diamond stone to bring it to my preferred 40° angle. I wonder if maybe a sheriff's shield on the next run would look good on them. If I can get any more of these I will.

Corgi - The knife covers on these knives are smallish and I think a shield would interfer with the jigging (take away from it). I do agree that a shield can really dress up a knife but the jigging on these Radio Knives and other #15s really needs to flow uninterupted.

It took me awhile to really understand that Ed, when I first started seriously getting into knives. I really like the older styles of shields, but some knives, especially smaller knives, look better without a shield imho. Sometimes the knife just gets to busy looking, and it loses some of it's appeal. YMMV of course

I agree that the jigging is great on these knives, but I would love to see one with a long narrow shield. The last thing I need is another #15 because they seem to follow me home too often, but a spear point shielded version in my opinion would look great.

true, I'm glad for the elegant simplicity of this knife, and the jigging is great, as everyone says, though another variation with shield could look interesting, I seem to recall one of Waynorth's pictures featuring a similar looking knife with sheriff shield, which I liked.

I heartily agree that a shield would really dress these knives up, especially with the new jigging, they really did a fine job with that!

MINE arrived today! Sent from the US 12th Dec...winter storms&Christmas:eek:

Just a quick review: even better than expected, the quality of finish is very impressive. Of particular note is the backspring/liner quality, really smooth finish, when you put your thumb over the spine you really cannot feel the different layers, it's like one solid piece including the handles! This is really the test of quality in my book and it's really inspiring. Ends of the springs properly cut-off and finished, no rough ends on this, super. The jigging is superb too, no blade-play or any irritations actually. Some could find the pulls a bit strong for their taste, suits me but they're strong on this one.

I was lucky to get this here in Europe and what with being totally satisfied with the quality of the Forum Knife, I really feel GEC is entering new territory qualitywise, very gratifying, a proud owner.

Now, off to get in some beer or cider to test out the opener's abilities...:D

Thanks all, Will
