Glennbad's 20th BF anniversary (a year late!) GAW **Winners Announced**

Congratulations on 21 years!
My journey here began in probably 2010 or so when I discovered that the internet could be used to look up lots of neat things about knives. I kept coming across Bladeforums when I asked the internet gods specific questions (“what is that little notch on the back of a blade called?”) and I finally joined so I could participate in the buy/sell section and post questions of my own.
Thousands of posts and 12 years later I have more knives than one person should and more new friends than I deserve. Even on a busy day I stop by here just to see what is going on:)
Even thought I have too many knives, that Schrade is too much to resist with that blade shape and green bone. Please count me in for that one!
Thank you all!!

21 years ... if I was a member that long ... you'd probably have seen me on the reality tv show "Hoarders" because my house would be filled with knives. I wish I had your ability. I "do" my best custom work using my checkbook, and have always been envious of people with your skills. My pops was a hard-ass and demanded perfection while I was growing up. If he thought what I did was half-assed - I'd pay the consequences. Those consequences weren't like current day punishment children receive like taking away their cellphone for an hour - the punishments I'd receive would have CPS and the Sheriff show up in today's world. All that said, 50-ish years later ... if I feel like I won't do something correctly the first time - I don't attempt it.

I am kinda partial to your Ugly Duck creation, but this is NOT an entry. I was fortunate enough to win a GAW this month sponsored by another generous member of this forum. I don't want to take an opportunity away from another being greedy ... but maybe someday I can own a product of your work. Congrats on your longevity.

Happy 21st to your BF account, and hey now it can legally have a drink in the US! Thanks for the giveaway, and I’d love to participate.

I looked back through my posts to see what brought me to BF. Originally, I joined because I was after a CRK with one of my kids’ birthday date. Didn’t end up buying that one, but found a different one later on. The three CRKs with all my kids’ birthdays are some of my most prized knives and some of the few moderns I still keep these days. I hope one day they’ll be interested in knives enough to appreciate their matching knife as their own.

But my first “activity” on BF was this post a few years back showing off my GEC 88.

I don’t really post on here but figured I’d share my “user” 88 Ace.

I’ve been carrying it for a while to decide if it’s a keeper or not and ended up falling in love. Mine has a bit of a tough pull on the clip blade, but very substantial feeling and stable in use.

I love how thin the stock is on the clip blade, making it an excellent fruit slicer. Haven’t really had too much use on the lambsfoot blade yet but I imagine it will become the “utility” option. With either blade out, it’s very comfortable in hand but I especially love how the peak on the clip blade forms a bit of a finger groove when the lambsfoot is out.

Let’s just say this one doesn’t have to worry about being sold any time soon.

And I stick around because I love seeing all the pics of cool knives and “talking knives” since nobody else in my day-to-day really cares about the subject.

Anyways, that’s enough rambling. Would you please put me down for that shadown lamb TEW?

Hi Glenn, I probably shouldn't enter since I've already gotten two knives from you, but I have still always wanted one that you modded. So if you could throw my name in for the Frankenlifter I would appreciate it (I recently gave away my Beer Scout, so it would be nice to have another caplifter knife).

What originally brought me to Blade Forums was a desire for the "best" EDC knife. I wanted to have the best possible knives. I had long carried pocket knives, but in 2013 I ran into a situation that made me want to upgrade from the jarbenza beaters I had always made do with:

I was at a dog park where two ladies' dogs had gotten into a fight and tangled their harnesses. One of the ladies had a small baby in a stroller, and the other was just very excitable. So there were screaming women, a crying baby, and two panicked dogs. I was able calm down the dogs, but I could not figure out any way to disengage the dogs without seriously injuring one or the other. I was the only person at the park with a knife, but I worked as landscaper, and my $9 gas station knife was very dull, and the two harnesses were both brand new. It was an extremely stressful and slow process cutting through new nylon webbing with something barely better than a butter knife, but I managed it without injuring either dog.

After that, I wanted to always have a good knife, not just a knife shaped object. I spent some time researching, and asking questions, and by early 2015 I not only had enough very nice knives that I would probably never need another one if I lived to 1,000, but I had managed to land my absolute dream knife. I no longer needed to hunt for knives, but I had learned to love the idea of knives and had lost the idea that there was a true objectively "best" knife to be found. I didn't want to leave the forums, so I started hanging around the Porch since people seemed nice here.

I got in on the 2015 Canal Street Serpentine Forum Knife, and really enjoyed the process. So much so that I decided to stick around. And I have stuck around since, entirely because of the camaraderie and generosity I have found here. Honestly, if it wasn't for the porch, I probably wouldn't have many traditionals, and I would certainly have fewer knives overall, but I am thankful for the friends and memories I have made here.

Wowsers Glenn what a choice...each one delightful in its own way.
Your work is always proper and good.
Remember this one you did for me? A cheapo shell construction STAG beautifully rehandled with a piece of old bone which came from a broken steel that belonged to my Grandad plus solid new bolsters. One of my precious treasures thats for sure. Unlike most other Porch folk with their generous self deprecating no entries.I'm in for the KutMaster.
2 reasons:
Your 20 year giveaway🥳 has reminded me that its 18years for me.So thanks for that🧐.
That plus Smeakol is turning 60 very soon and thinks he should get a pressie 😉😂.
Good on you Glenn and heres to another 20.
Cheers.

I'm in, Franken-lifter. Be a great anniversary knife, 20 years member in November.
What brought me to BF looking for quality knives & info. Not huge market here in Australia.
I stay for the community it surpasses knives, it reminds me that there are still a lot of great people in the world despite what the media says about the internet.
These days most of the knives I edc are traditionals gifted to me by BF members how cool is that😎
Thanks for the GAW!
❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Congratulations on 21 years, Glen!
I have had a knife in my pocket since I was 5 years old. When the one hand openers came out, I started accumulating and carrying those. About 16 years ago I picked up a couple of folders made for the NKCA, which started me buying pocket knives on ebay with no rhyme or reason to my buying. I joined Blade Forums to ask a couple of questions in Bernard Levine's forum. I didn't post very much for quite a few years, still don't post a lot as I have a tendency to hit the post reply button too soon.
Anyway, I would like to be in for the TEW lambfoot. Thanks for the chance.

Congratulations on 20 plus years and thank you for hosting this giveaway. I was very focused when I came here. I collected only Case and case family gunstock patterns, specifically searching for Springville, NY Case Brothers era gunstocks. Blade forums opened me up to so much more. Falling in and becoming a Beckerhead, seeing all the newer Buck and Spyderco offerings. With help of the forum I have definitely broadened my collection. If forced to pick one from your giveaway. I'd probably pick that green handled Schrade. Here is a quick pic of the original 2 that brought me here.

But my Gold expired, and I won't have funds to renew or go basic for a couple months.
There are other not cutlery related things I need more.

Either way, I'll sit this one out. I've entered at least two GAWS already this year. ☹️ (I didn't win)
I don't want to enter many. GAWS are not why I hang out here. I don't want folks to think they are. 😇

You aren't getting out of this that easily! Even though you don't currently have a membership, you still have the minimum amount of posts needed...by about 134 times. You're also one of the people that make the Porch a great place to hang out. So please pick a knife that you wouldn't mind winning if your name is picked...

Like many of us, my fanatical interest in knives is firmly grounded in childhood-despite nobody else in the family liking them ;).

I chanced on the Forum by accident but was interested by it having many tastes, points of view and contributors from different nations. I came here to learn and that's still happening :) It has given me the opportunity to trade knives, buy, sell, give gifts, receive them and to find out about unknown knives and refine my tastes. A patern I'd never heard of, still less seen was the Farmer's Jack and for this I'm indebted to wlfryjr wlfryjr Lyle, later on he put together an SFO with GEC and I'm delighted to have one.

Congratulations on being 21 you have come of age  And the knife I'd like to put in for in this fine GAW is the Micarta Lamb Foot.

Knife entusiasm, Levine calls us Knife Fanciers (very right!) , can lead to obsession but as the late and eccentric Howard Hughes is alleged to have said "Passion will make you crazy, but is there any other way to live? "

Thanks, Will

If you insist.

I first came to BF to find out if Rough Rider knives (retail on Amazon at the time was under $10 ... plus free shipping by the seller and the Governor's cut to spend your money (AKA: "State Sales Tax") were quality knives, or were like the 1960's/1970's "Frost" Knife Shaped Objects* I used to decorate the bottom of the Mississippi River with. (at midstream)
(*would not take or hold an edge keener than a butter knife, wiggly wobbly blades, matchbook cover paper wide gaps, etc.
BTW: A matchbook cover could be (and was) used to set the points to 18/1000" when doing a tuneup, and your feeler guage set had either been "borrowed" without your knowledge, or it ran away from home.)

I guess you can put me in for the T.E.W. Lambsfoot.
I don't have a Lambsfoot yet.

Wow! Congrats on the 20 plus years!

Count me in please!
I'd like to put my name in for the green Schrade 196. It's right up my alley, I love the green jigging & the florist pattern will get a lot of use cutting flowers & doing floral work for Mrs. Hoovie.

I've always been a fan of pocket knives since my dad gave me my first one & taught me how to properly use it. I think I was around 6. It was an old Frost Cutlery "Peanut". I distinctly remember my mom always asking me to check my pockets and put the knife up on the dresser so I didn't wind up taking it to school. That was a little over 30 years ago now.

Later on when I was a teenager & in my early 20's I got into more modern knives with clips & thumb studs. Then once I got into my 30's I started to come back around full circle to the traditional side. They just feel right & have more soul/character to them.

I started lurking here for a while just to see all the different brands & styles y'all have been posting up. I've always known about Buck & Case but I kept seeing new names of manufacturers & patterns come up that I have never heard of before. I instantly got pulled in started digging around for interesting patterns & learning about the history behind them. I got tired of just lurking & not participating so I finally wound up joining in last year. Once I joined up I was instantly welcomed by everyone here.

I've stayed because I enjoy the relaxed & friendly atmosphere here on the porch. I like seeing the conversations being had & have been blown away by the generosity of fellow members. It's nice to see nowadays where the world is moving at an exceedingly faster pace but here I can just pull up a chair & let my mind unwind. It's a similar reason I got back into traditionals as well. Not everything has to be so high speed all the time, it's important to slow down every once in a while & just enjoy life. I'll take an extra minute to reach down into a pocket & put both hands on a knife to open it.

And that's where I'm currently at in this rabbit hole 🤣

Thanks for the opportunity!

Congrats on 21 years , Glenn. I always admire your work when I see it, especially your stag. I’ve entered a couple of your giveaways with no luck so I’ll try again. I’m in for the frankenlifter. It’s got great stag and similar to the soda scout I got when I first found blade forums.

I carried a stainless Case stockman in college and at the beginning of my career. At some point I bought a CV Case trapper and really like the carbon steel. Researching the carbon steel and more knives with carbon steel brought me to blade forums in 2015. In the process I discovered GEC and bought a Soda Scout. I lurked for a couple years before joining. Once I joined, I stayed for the wealth of information but mostly for the people. I enjoy the daily interactions, it is such a great, welcoming group of people. There are few places I’ve seen on the internet that is so civilized. Thanks for the chance, Glenn

Hi GB and congratulations, sir!

Friends within the knife world encouraged me to joint up on BF. In fact, I started collecting pocket knives shortly after. The wealth of knowledge and good people is why I continue to be active. It’s a great place to be and have made new friends along the way. I hope to share my passion with others and teach them history of knife making.
Having said, I’m “in” for the TEW Lambsfoot. Thanks for doing this wonderful act of kindness!

Please read everything first, you cannot just say "I'm in"...

Through total fault of my own, I missed my 20th anniversary at BF last year. To rectify that, I will have the GAW I should have had last year. Why host a GAW? Well, one, I like to do them. 2nd, it's a way to give back to the forum that has given me a place to go, hang out, blow off a little steam, and talk blades with like-minded porch denizens.

I originally came to BF to research Schrade knives. I spent a lot of time in the Schrade sub-forum back then. I've since shifted my focus to "The Porch", as my appreciation and collecting goes beyond just Schrade knives now. Through the last 20 years you members have been entertaining, helpful, encouraging, a good listening ear when I was having a tough time, and a good sounding board for modding ideas and such. So thanks to all of you and to Spark for giving us a place to play!

Okay, enough of that wordy nonsense....the GAW. I have around 5 knives to give away. They are not new. Like any survivor, they may have dings. scratches, and years of honest use on them. If you win one of them, I would prefer that you not re-sell it. You are more than welcome to give it away. That's the generosity we like here on the Porch.

To qualify for the GAW, you need to be basic paying member or higher, or simply have at least 100 meaningful forum posts (contributing to the discussion of knives, not just "cool knife bro"). Select one knife you would like your name to be put into for drawing. You can use your slot to nominate someone else, but you have to choose a knife for them.

This is a participation GAW. you can share pics or stories, but I do want you to tell us what brought you to Blade Forums, and why you stayed

Now, on to the knives! Sorry, no forum knives, you guys cleaned me out last time!

This first one is one I recently shared in the Guardians thread. It's one of the new TEW lambfoot knives. Shadow pattern with houndstooth shield. The micarta is something that Evan Nicolaides @esnyx gave me years back. I believe it's some that he made when he was just getting going, now look at him!

This next one is a face only a mother could love. I call it the Franken-lifter. Made with parts from a couple different knives, it's a utility-driven knife for sure. I gave it some stag pants, but hey, even they aren't that good looking. I even cut a fancy swedge in the blade, LOL. However, the knife is built to work, and help you play after work!

This next one started life as an EO utility knife. I think it was a Kutmaster, but the blade stamp was ground off as a second. Still, there was nothing wrong with it in my eyes. I dressed it up with some of my stag. It's a smaller one, around 3 1/4" closed. It's pinchable and not stiff on the fingers opening and closing.

The next knife is a Schrade Walden 196 pattern. I think it was a florist-type knife, with a slight hawkbill blade, that I ended up grinding flat to make more of a sheepsfoot blade. It has hunter green jig bone and a cool arrowhead shield. The blade has a nice patina already going. I think it would make a nice gardening knife or whatever kind of knife.

The last knife is a custom custom. It's a Jeff Mitchell custom, I think it's one of his earlier knives. The original knife had some Koa (I think) that ended up cracking. I put some nice stag on it. I also re-ground the blade a little thinner. It's smaller at 3 1/2" closed, but a nice size and capable knife. It's not pinchable. and the pull is a little stiffer, so maybe not ideal for softer fingernails.

Okay, that's it for now...maybe I'll add something else, who knows???

Good luck!

Very generous of you........ I'd love in on the last one you recovered in stag.........Looks like an awesome tool....👍
Been here a good while and lurked before that.....Never spent much time in traditionals but they sure as hell are growing on me...👍👍👍........Thanks for the opportunity.

Congratulations Mr. glennbad glennbad !!! 😁

Not an entry but a ‘Thank you!’ For your awesomeness, in your porch contributions and amazing work you do for us! Or simply being a class A gentleman!
