Glennbad's 20th BF anniversary (a year late!) GAW **Winners Announced**

glennbad glennbad you are a true gentleman! You did a wonderful job replacing a pivot pin on a French knife I bought a couple years ago. Outstanding work and overall excellent experience! I've hoped to have one of your creations ever since. Please throw my name in for the Franken lifter!

Glenn's masterful pivot pin replacement saved this knife!

Unlike most people here, I almost never carried a pocket knife until around the time I joined Blade Forums about 14 years ago. I had a well used SAK & 110 that my dad had given me as a kid but they were used during camping and hiking only. I've always been fascinated with guns and knives, mostly guns, when I was younger. The first knife I actually purchased was in the mid 90's.... a $10 stiletto in Tijiuana 😬

I found Blade Forums while researching a knife I could legally carry as a defensive weapon (Spyderco Delica Emerson opener). That was a terrible idea on my part and I have long since abandoned any ideas of self defense with a knife..... pepper spray these days....

I also found out there is no such thing as one and done with a pocket knife!

It took me about 3 years here to realize that I hated pocket clips and didn't need a knife to open lightning fast. I started making scales for my modern folders out of fancy burl woods.

Then I discovered The Porch. Up until then, I honestly thought almost all traditional folding knives were tiny, like the Case Tiny Toothpick, which is just too darn small for me!

Since then, I've accumulated knives from all around the world. I don't spend as much time around here these days due to so many other life obligations, but I love to check in and see what everyone is carrying as much as possible!

Thanks for the generous GAW Glenn!

I'll join in, you made me look at when I joined, a hair over 10 years for me. Both longer than I thought and shorter. If memory serves the first time I visited the forum was back in 2010 or so. I was looking for a new backpacking knife, and stumbled on Opinels, so I looked them up to find more info, and well here we are. Haha
It took another half decade or so to make an account to save things to, and then another couple years to actually post anything.
.
As for which knife, that's a hard choice probably the lambsfoot.

Congratulations Glenn. I came here to find information about a Randall knife. I've always liked traditional items. After finding the information about the Randall, I stuck around the Porch to check out traditional folders. I'm fairly new to the knife hobby. I like seeing everyone's pictures.

Not an entry

Congrats on 21 years Glenn. A very generous GAW. Well respected for sure.
I have been a member for 17 years. I came here as a "modern" folder guy, but for the last ten or more years I got my head straight & have been strictly Traditional. Lots of great folks here with a wealth of knowledge. GuestWho101 GuestWho101 was a great asset in the beginning; teaching me the ropes in the traditional arena. Very generous too, as are many people here.
I would like to nominate my spot to Sacto Sacto for the Franken-Lifter. A fellow enthusiast of the great Central Valley.

Found blade forums 11 yrs ago while doing a little “research” . Thought it would be nice to have something to carry daily to commemorate my 40th birthday. What a rabbit hole :)
Please select a knife that you would like to be put in for drawing...

Congrats on your longevity here, Glenn!!

I came here in 2009 to find out about an Emerson cqc-7 I wound up with (long story).
I had long been collecting case and other brands , mostly trapper patterns, but also some jacks and others I liked.

glennbad glennbad do you remember this one?
You called this one "The Sunken Canoe", and said it should be a good user. Marigold Culpepper bone. It was in a J K Handmade Knives Christmas Passaround box, and I was lucky to select it from the box.

Still fully operational and pleasing to use.

Please place me in for any one of your choice of any of the knives you modded.:^)

Congratulations on 20+! What an awesome post and giveaway.

My first go around with Bladeforums took place around 2013. I created an account initially to talk knives, after hearing the forum referred to in a YouTube video. I initially used it to better understand steel types. I fell out of love with the forums as life and work took over, and I stopped regularly checking in on things or really collecting knives.. I have since lost access to the account, and frankly cannot even remember the name.

About 3 years ago, I stumbled upon traditional knives and fell down the rabbit hole of GEC. Naturally, seeking information led me to the porch, where I stay exclusively. I lurked for over a year before creating an account. I was immediately reminded of how awesome a resource the forums can be when I started posting again. The history many of these great guys know and can speak to when it comes to traditional patterns, materials, and various manufacturers is amazing. They also bring the receipts, as some would say, by showing off awesome literature with great history on patterns and blade shapes. I now stay for the camaraderie and general community the porch—and blade forums—has to offer.

I think I’ll go in for the Mitchell, seems like an excellent piece!

Seeing as someone waynorth waynorth was gracious enough to put me in it is only fitting I put someone in,I think we can all agree how heart breaking it is to know 321Bandaid 321Bandaid has an unorthodox way of opening and closing pocket knives which requires the use of many bandages, might be wise to trying cutting some rock with it before sending to avoid a lawsuit,if he were to win

I remember creating my BF account. I had my first job after drying out from a fit of unpronounceable debauchery in my early twenties. No more working in blues bars and stuffed-crust pizza joints for me, no sir - I was well on my way to becoming an upstanding and productive member of society but for that, I was going to need a knife.

My father learned proper knife handling in the Boy Scouts and thought it would be a good idea for me to do the same. Promised a knife if I could earn the merit badge, I tried Cub Scouts but having come into the world with a developed insurrectionist streak, it didn't work out long term. I eventually wore my folks down and at around age 10 I, a Cub Scout dropout, was gifted my first knife - a Victoriniox Swiss Army Knife (at the time, I recall being convinced that only derelicts, scofflaws, and no-accounts would ever be seen carrying a Wenger!! 😂) I talked to my father about this the other day and he said he must've been nuts to give me a knife at 10. He probably was.

At some point I traded my SAK in for a Spyderco Dragonfly, but after a growth spurt or two, it started to seem kinda small. Being a hopelessly edgy teen, I traded up to a Spyderco Harpy a la Hannibal Lecter. It was a great knife, but had been lost somewhere along the way, and I decided that was the knife I needed to have again. Spyderco Harpy: Part Deux - but how? I had never made an online purchase, I don't even think it occurred to me that I might be able to buy a knife online, but there in my fancy entry-level customer service cubicle (there were no smart phones and I didn't have a computer of my own...) I used Google to search for a local Spyderco retailer. I found one, Jet's Florida Outdoors (long closed) went there in person, and had them order me the knife (at MSRP 🤦‍♂️). I still have that knife, but more importantly that day I also found Bladeforums, created an account, and started reading.

16 years and one month later, I made my first post. In the traditionals section. Having found out about GEC knives in the toxic pit of another social media platform (late 2022), I was hesitant to post but sensed that something was different here on "the porch." There wasn't any name-calling. No one was being compared to any of the combatants in The Great War. No one was being SWATted. Fans of Harness Jacks and proponents of rope knives were seemingly coexisting peacefully side by each. Something was definitely different! I made my post. Angry Waiter Angry Waiter cracked a joke about me taking my sweet time. It was funny and not mean. I felt welcome. I have since.

Good knives are great. Good people, even better. What we have here are plenty of both. Keeps me coming back - that, and a crippling knife habit. 🤣😭

glennbad glennbad - Congrats on 20 and 21! As someone who is just taking their first uncertain steps in traditional modding, your work is inspirational and the knowledge you regularly share invaluable. Thank you!

I'd be honored to throw my hat in the ring for that sweet Mitchell custom. I've been playing around with making some lanyard beads and am always looking for another knife with the required orifice!

Here's the picture from my first BF post - way back in February of 2023!

Oh, gosh! I started to enter the GAW a couple of days ago but decided to let others take a swing. However, this lovely chap -> Oldy Oldy (and well known comedian , lol) has tossed me in the mix! Let's give it a go...

This month literally completes my first year into knives as a hobby. Beforehand, I had only owned a few knives over the years... a SAK and an older Schrade my dad had given me when I was a wee dude and a few other "junk" knives here and there.

Last year, I somehow ended up with a Camillus from the 80s and stumbled across BF while attempting to research the knife. Luckily? 🤔, I ran into JonMcD JonMcD who swiftly kicked me down the 🐇 🕳️ ! 🤣

Aside from knives, there are literally some of the best dudes I've ever met on "the Porch". 🤝🏻 That's why I keep coming back! There's a wealth of knowledge and friendships to be had here.

And, yes. I've needed more Bandaids than I care to admit. 😐

Put me down for the Frakenlifter! 👍🏻
Thanks for the opportunity glennbad glennbad !!!

I can't resist to nice micarta, so I join the band.
I love the reptilian look together with the raspberry color. I also have yet to discover TEW.

I don't remember exactly how I landed here, I was already on a French forum, coming here made me discover Queen and GEC (Case is -not so widely- available here) then Schrade and I discovered I prefered "smaller" (less than 4' 5") knives and also the (then affordable) quality of US brands.
I also met many fine people from everywhere sharing their knowledge without pedantry.

A very generous and awesome GAW Glenn. Congratulations on over two decades! And thank you for blessing this community with your works services and knowledge for so many years. While I don’t have any of your amazing recoveries, I do have this perfectly modded 23 in which you skillfully deleted that pesky drop point blade. This massive tiger is still a favorite.

Like others have said, I’ve had an affinity for pocket knives ever since I was a kid, but it wasn’t until about 5 years ago when I stumbled across my first GEC that dropped me hard down the rabbit hole of traditionals. I joined BF shortly thereafter when I was researching a knife. I think I initially paid for membership so I could purchase on the exchange but then I found the porch and well that explains why I stayed! Come for the knives stay for the community. What a community it is here.

I admittedly am not the biggest fan of stag, but something about that EO beauty is drawing me to it. Love the colors and I’m big on the utilitarian aspect of knives. I’m in on that one and thank you again for the generosity and the opportunity.
