Good morning Guardians!I apologize if I double quote or click a quote on one of your posts and it doesn't appear. I am having a terrible time with the forum software this morning!
I'm excited this morning!
I got a new to me Lambsfoot in the mail yesterday evening. It's totally different to me. I don't have anything like it in my collection and I can't find another one like it to compare it to. I did find reference to the company, but I could only find it in reference to older knives. I believe my knife was possibly made in the late 70's or early 80's. I know Jack will be able to help out. Thanks in advance
Jack Black buddy!
My knife is a Venture, H.M. Slater, Sheffield. It has some beautiful deeply grained horn handles. The bolsters are brass and the liners are steel. It is a big'un, which I really like! As a note, the blade looks very much like the blade on my big'uns from Wright's. The horn is hard to photograph but I got some photos to show you!![]()

Cool knife, Ron.
Good Sunday Guardians. Another photo of my HHB and my Cypress wood wheel barrow. So darn hard to get a clear photo of the knife

Thank you, my friend.
I promise to carry the Hartshead until you're back to feeling better.![]()
Good morning Guardians - and anyone else looking in. Rainy, dreary, day here today.
Hey Charlie @ waynorth !!!! When I got this knife way back in September 2019, you said to use the heck out of it. I have been. It's developed a nice patina - enough to consume the etch and dull the bolster somewhat. Thanks for such a great knife.

Anyone else got a WCLF to share and thank Charlie @waynorth for?????
Most definitely! I've carried mine a few times in a slip, but don't think I've ever used it. Mine is still pristine.

That sure is a beauty, Ed. Nice patina. I like the traditional, uniform grey patinas--really don't like the quickly forced, black, splotchy ones.Good morning Guardians - and anyone else looking in. Rainy, dreary, day here today.

I’m almost positive it’s the same blade as a large Wright’s Lambsfoot Jeff! I’ve noticed nicks that large on some of their knives before! They certainly packed a lot of blade in that frame, it almost looks longer than the handle! And I greatly appreciate the large nick for easy opening.
Thanks Jack! I’m glad it sparked your interest! I’m looking forward to more of your comments my friend!Hey Ron, I suspect the problems with the site are due to the huge amount of folks using the internet at the moment. At least the mail is getting through ok!Wow, that's a very interesting knife my friend, if you have a look in the forum index, I hope you will find some past discussion of H.M. Slater, and some history of the firm. As I recently reported Slater's, long since moved from the old Venture Works, a stone's throw from Wright's, have now shut up shop. Prior to that, the small number of knives still carrying their stamp were made up for them by jobbing cutlers and Little Mesters, including Stan Shaw. I've had a few other Lambsfoot knives with brass bolsters, but only in a smaller size. Unfortunately, I'm only on my phone at the moment, but I'm looking forward to having a better look at your knife on a larger screen. Just looking at it here, I think your knife could be even more recent. It's worth noting that Wright's, now and in the past, make up knives for other Sheffield cutlers, and were of course the source of Trevor Ablett's parts

Thanks John!Thank you, Ron.
One to use and one to look at.
Cool knife, Ron.
If that's the knife I saw on the site (which shall not be named),
I was wondering which one of the Guardians was going to pick it up.
Barrett, it’s probably not over .020” deep. It’s wide and darkened from the heat treat process. That’s a serious nail nick on that knife!![]()
Is it as deep as it looks, or just wide?
Impressive herd.![]()
Very nice herd FBC!![]()
Thanks a lot KevinWow! That's a pretty incredible collection my friend

Thanks Jack! I’m glad it sparked your interest! I’m looking forward to more of your comments my friend!I have been reading some of the information in this thread about H.M Slater. I’ve also went back and looked at some of the older knives that have been posted. I was almost hesitant to mention Trevor Ablett. He was the one I immediately thought of when I got this knife in hand. It is a beautifully made knife. The brass bolsters and their shape are also very much like the ones Trevor used on his knives. Whom ever made it, I’m tickled to death to have it in my collection.
I’ll try to get better photos when it’s not a rainy day. There is also something stamped or engraved on the backside of the tang, but I cannot make it out. I’m going to get my 10X loupe out and take a better look!
Thanks John!It did indeed come from the site! I guess I was just lucky!

Thank you John, Ron and Jack.
A special thanks to you, Jack. My Lambsfoot collection would not have been possible without you, my friend.
That's a beauty, Ron!
Howdy, Ed. Great lookin' WCLF!
I threw mine in my pocket after taking a pic of the herd.

I agree with you on the blade and the fact about the bolsters. My thoughts are also that the blade came from Wright's too Ron. If they had made it for Slater's directly though, I think it would have had a nickel silver bolster. Throughout his career, Trevor was primarily a jobbing cutler, and that is just the sort of contract work he did. His use of brass was certainly unusual![]()
