Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

While we’re on the subject I thought I’d show y’all what I’m currently using. I usually get the oil at Home Depot. I got the needle oiler bottle from Amazon. :)

The Boker Oil is tested to be food safe. For me that is an advantage. The same could probably be said about Ballistol but with the way that stuff smells I would not have that near anything I‘d like to eat;)

The Norton Oil is also food safe. It’s labeled on the front of the can. I’m definitely going after one of the Boker pens. :)

That's supposed to be really good oil Ron  I've tried many times to get hold of it here, but without any luck :(

Yes indeed, as is the Norton I believe :) I think Ballistol is also food-safe, but I know what you mean! :D

Edit - Ballistol is NOT food-safe.

Before you mentioned it I didn’t see the notice that the Norton oil can be used in a kitchen. The Boker oil is easily available in Germany the Norton not. That makes it an easy decision for me. Otherwise the Norton oil would be an interesting alternative.

Very fine Barrett, like a thick syringe  Nice pic there my friend, I have a little oil bottle like that, I got it with some Camelia Oil, but I really don't recommend that, it damaged several old knives :( Unfortunately, you can no longer buy mineral oil from the pharmacy here, and I hate the smell of "unscented" baby oil. Compared to the Boker stuff, I think the pharmacy stuff, and baby oil is very viscous. I bought some expensive Renaissance Metal De-Corroder some time ago, but it came without any instructions o_O I'm saving it in case I find an Anglo Saxon sword stuffed behind a hedge or something ;) :D

I imagine that’s helpful for getting oil where you want it without making a mess. With the Nalgene dropper, I usually just put a drop of oil on the pivot and open and close the knife a few times to distribute the oil. I’ve had some issues with rust spots on back springs and steel liners of some knives before, so after I carry a knife for a while, I’ll also put a couple drops down in the blade well, then wipe it around in there with a small gun-cleaning patch.

The mineral oil I have isn’t super thin, but it’s thinner than baby oil, and like I said, I’ve never had it gum up or cause any problems.

Good luck with that sword! ;) :D Make sure you do a dance when you find it — or is that only if you find gold?

I have a can of that Norton oil that I used to use for sharpening (before I switched from Arkansas stones to diamond plates). I didn’t realize it was just mineral oil until after I bought a 16 oz bottle from the pharmacy (which might as well be a lifetime supply for knife use). :D

I will say that the Norton oil is noticeably thinner than the pharmacy mineral oil. I might switch for a while.

I remember you saying that about Norton oil before, Jack. I wish I would have remembered it before my visit to Sheffield, I would have gladly brought you some.

Ballistol is not food-safe. It’s labeled as “eco-friendly,” “skin safe” and having “no carcinogens,” but it also says on the front of the can, “HARMFUL OR FATAL IF SWALLOWED.”

And it does have an odd smell, doesn’t it? :D

I use pipe-cleaners. For a non-smoker I get through a lot! :D

I'm not sure, but if I find a sword, I'm going to dance anyway! ;) :D

Thanks for the thought pal, it's funny how simple things can sometimes not be available from one country to another. It used to be the case with ethanol in Scotland, it was very tightly controlled there, so if you were using an alcohol stove there, you had to make sure you had enough fuel with you

Thanks for the correction Barrett, I'll go back and amend my post! I was actually told that by the dealer I bought my bottle from o_O

It has an odd smell and it‘s chemically not neutral. Therefore I wouldn’t recommend it for the joints of a knife - not always knowing what material is used for the washers. I once cleaned a leather sheath with Ballistol knowing the smell would be gone before the next use.

What I didn’t consider were the brass parts on the sheath which got a nasty green color after some time.
The brass definitely did not agree with the Ballistol - at least not long term. For cleaning purposes on a surface where you can remove it easily it’s ok but if it gets in the joint or anywhere inside the knife you’ll never get it out completely.

They do look good. What are they, never heard of steak bakes, and i am a pastry aficionado.:p

They are pretty common here, but only over about the last 20 years I think. Puff pastry, with minced steak and onion in gravy. Quite tasty :)

Interesting post. This place always informs, keeps you on your toes and makes you think and be open minded about new ideas. I thought that Ballistol would have been fine for knife maintenance, maybe not. Everyone keep your opinions coming, on all matters, it makes one think and willing to try new ideas and they are just plain interesting.

Good morning Guardians! :) I really hope y’all are safe and well this morning. I’m especially thinking about Vince @Prester John and Rachel @r8shell and how the hurricane may affect them and their families! Like Jack, I’m carrying my Big Eb today! I hope everyone will stay safe out there! :)

Ditto, about Vince and Rachel, and anyone else affected. Take care.
