Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

We have a 3-day weekend coming here, (with the extra day being known as a Bank Holiday), and completely true to form, the weather has changed from gorgeous early Summer sunshine to heavy rain, lower temperatures, and some wind :( I was hoping to go for a hike tomorrow, and to get some outdoor pics of my new Lambsfoot knives, but I'm not sure now, might have to play it by ear o_O Hope everyone has a good Friday, and an even better weekend

Thanks Leslie! :D  I think old Sheffield stag-handled knives look amazing, the scale-cutters were experts, and had the pick of the best Sambar available, and the cutlers were used to working with it. Stag's popularity declined in the 'Space Age' 60's and 70's I think, as of course did the whole infrastructure of the Sheffield cutlery trade. The Indian Government's ban on Sambar exports has left the few remaining Sheffield cutlers scratching around for stag, which often has poor character, and is cut too thick, with much of its character subsequently ground off. When cutlers like Wright's (and Stan Shaw) manage to get hold of Sambar, it is generally old pre-cut stock intended for flatware (table cutlery) or carving sets. In the case of the former, the pieces are quite short. In terms of using Sambar for future Guardians knives, we'd probably have to supply it, or perhaps settle for a smaller pattern. I think a nice Sambar-hafted Big 'un would look great, but that may just be a dream ;)
I have some pictures of what I believe are the ugliest stag covers ever hafted, but I wouldn't want to stink up this thread with them. ;):p

The ugliest I've ever seen were on an A.Wright & Son 'Senator'! Fortunately they changed them for me :)

Of course, that's another way of using shorter pieces of stag, having double bolster or a longer front bolster

That 'Senator' looks nice now. Mine was returned to the dealer. I don't believe it was made by Wright&Son as advertised. If so, they sure have improved their craftsmanship over the past couple years!

The stag totally lacked character before  I have seen knives advertised a number of times as Wright's, when it was obvious they weren't. They had stainless blades and looked to have been made in China. It doesn't help that Wright's have so little interest in the internet, or that they sell on their seconds, and supply blades. Having said that, when I have seen their 'seconds' at the factory, the flaws have been minor and cosmetic, a couple of hairline cracks around the pin for example. I have seen flawed knives of theirs though.

Lambsfoot and literature for today.

Good stuff Josh

I was hoping to have a day catching up with email and doing a few things in the house. Then a pipe burst in my kitchen! Made quite a mess :( Just waiting for a plumber now o_O

Still having hard lighting here, but how about a black and tan fresh off the boat!

The Ebony Guardiansfoot is exceptionally nice. Well done, Jack. Praise for all your hard work. I like how slim the rosewood model is, too.

Thank you my friend, I'm glad you have them both for the weekend :) Thanks for the pic, and I look forward to seeing more of them both :)

I remember the last one being much slower to patinate. Maybe I was eating fewer grapefruits.

I certainly remember the last one being SLOWER! o_O The steel is the same Jer, and I doubt the polishing process has changed. Nice to see those two together my friend :)

I think your stag Senator is very appealing, Jack.:confused::thumbsup:
I won a similar model in an R.c.s GAW that I think is a fine knife that doesn't get carried often enough.

(Currently, my horn Guardians Lambsfoot is one of the knives I carry every day, independent of my weekly rotation schedule. But I'm thinking of instituting a "lambsfoot mini-rotation" as part of my quotidian quartet. I'll soon have 4 A. Wright lambsfoot knives that I could carry a week at a time, in turn. I'd still have a lambsfoot in my pocket every day, it just wouldn't be the same lambsfoot from week to week.)
