Yeah, they must have a smaller fryer or something Charlie. It's rare, but I've come across one or two other places like that. There's a fish and chip shop near the bottom of my street. The chips have been absolutely terrible for all the time I've lived here, but historically, it was a Jewish business, and so cooked in vegetable oil. It was reputed to have the best fish and chips in Leeds. Similarly, the best chippy I know of, in Sheffield, has used vegetable oil since I was a kid. I guess there's sometimes more to it. I once knew a chap who ran a course at a local college, specifically teaching people how to fry fish and chips. Are the chips cooked in different oil?? It took years for people to realize the beef fat content at MickeyD's!!!![]()

Another bloke I used to know built and restored canal boats at a bit of a hippy town, called Hebden Bridge, (I've written about it before). A lot of his customers, and his friends, were vegetarians, and he'd often take them to a local fish and chip shop, where he assured them everything was cooked in oil. One time, he was with a couple of people, and one of them asked if something on the menu was vegan. The proprietor told him it was, but then added, "It doesn't really matter though mate, because everything is cooked in beef fat!"
