I wonder if all of his experience counting out seeds and nuts for feeding his feral friends gave him an advantage??
I apologize for my embarrassing performance!
In retrospect, I realized that I visualized the beans in the glass as a cone (with straight sides coming to a point, which is not a very accurate model), rather than as half an ellipsoid (essentially, half an American football shape). Also in looking back, I noticed that I had inadvertently miscalculated the volume of a typical coffee bean in terms of "cubic bean lengths", essentially treating each bean as being as thick as it was long!
(Had I avoided those two errors, I'd have come up with 302 beans for my estimate, which is still a sizable error, but much closer than my actual guess.)
I don't know what the "average active duration" of BF threads is, in terms of days or posts, but I'd guess the "half-life" is FAR shorter than that for this Guardians thread! Buddy Holly said it best (I'm paraphrasing slightly):
I'm gonna tell you how it's gonna be
You're gonna show your lambs to me
A thread to last more than one day
The lambsfoot thread will not fade away.
