I've just been watching a movie/documentary about George Mallory and Sandy Irvine's 1924 climb on Everest. I hadn't realised when I started watching it, but the film features US climber Conrad Anker, who found Mallory's body on Everest, 75 years after he and Irvine had disappeared (I'm just reading Anker's book). Anker returns to Everest to try to recreate the 1924 climb, choosing British climber Leo Houlding as his partner. Coincidentally, I photographed Houlding climbing as a boy, and he is shown in the film, soloing a route on Stanage Edge near Sheffield, which I remember climbing early in my own climbing career. While it sadly goes unmentioned, early on in the film, while Anker is talking about the possessions recovered from Mallory's body, his Lambsfoot knife can clearly be seen

Thanks Jack. Very interesting, I will have to get my hands on that documentary. I have Boukreev's "The Climb", Breashears's "High Exposure" and Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" , "Eiger Dreams". Good stuff. Do you have any idea as the make of the lambsfoot?

That's a decent library Dwight :) Mallory's Lambsfoot was made by W.E. Oates of Sheffield. If you check the thread index, there are a number of prior posts about Mallory and his Lambsfoot

Because Linda and I are still waiting to celebrate Christmas with the kids. We discovered this TV series The Crown and going through it.
There sure is real mix up of characters esp Winston Churchhill and Princess Margret. Not to mention Elizebeth and Lord Mount Batten.
We find it a very interesting series for sure, who knew of all the goings on.

...
LOL! Yes, Christian! :D Up until about the 1950's, a lot of Sheffield workers paid a man a couple of coppers a week to wake them up for work. He'd go round knocking on windows with a long stick. He was called the 'Knockeruper'! :D
...
Strange coincidence!
I'm reading a novel (by former basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and co-author Anna Waterhouse) about Mycroft and young Sherlock Holmes. Last night I read a chapter in which an urchin who has been rescued from working as a coal-flue sweep expressed the desire to be trained for a career as a Knocker Upper, which was a dream job for that lad!

(Thanks to r8shell r8shell who helped me find Jack's post so I could reply to it. The search function was letting me down, which is relatively uncommon in my attempts to use it.)

Here's my Union Jack, which gets me up every morning! :D

Good point Rachel!  The Knockerupper's mum? o_O ;)

Great pic of your Lambsfoot :)

I get a bit lost in these days between Xmas and New Year, can never work out which day it is  I sometimes fill the gap by going away to the coast, but don't have anything like that planned this year. I do still need to catch up with a few friends though :) I'll have my AC in my pocket anyway :)

If I ever meet Claire Foy, I will remind her of the old adage about not acting with animals or children, and ask her if John Lithgow belongs on that list.
Not that she isn't more than a match for anybody.
