HI Scramsax/Seax/Saex Design Thread

It really depends on who makes it and what handle material it gets.

IIRC, if we specify horn, Bura will likely make it (or at least oversee it) and that will command a higher price.

The design is fairly straightforward and the model is somewhere around 13". The blade is also only 1/4" thick. So, my guess is that the price will be somewhere between $75 and $100.

I'm less concerned about price than I am about them getting it right - no offense intended, but a flat-grind, zero-edge design is not common. Neither is the sheath Dave made for it (though, that really should go over ok).

Given its size, this knife should feel very quick in the hand. Dave gave it a distal taper. It will be a real fighter.

...or as Keith puts it "a nice karda for (a) falcata..." :D ;)

Let's start some lists:
(indicate if you'll want Keith to add runes to yours)

Given what I've seen of the kamis' flair for, ummm, 'free interpretation', put me down for 'I'm very interested, but I want to wait until I see it'

"Perhaps if there are enough of us that want one with runes we could have Uncle Bill send ours directly to you (as a group) and then you could ship them out when you receive payment from us individually. I know Bill doesn't like to do that normally, but then again, he doesn't like special orders either..."--Pen

That works for me. That also allows me to get some nice digital pix of the etchings. For those who get the blade etched by me, I'll throw the Tiw rune in fer free! I'll also include a copy of the Futhark so you can all read yer runes, and write them as well.

I'll have the wood model of the runic decoder rings ready soon;)

Put me in the gotta have one ASAP category, Pen.

Dan, put me down as a definite taker, ready to play, er I mean pay, now. It's a leap of faith, but a small one, and worth taking. After all, no one knew how the first batch of six Pen knives was going to turn out, but I wouldn't give mine up for love nor money.

Sarge

For each person who is getting runes, I'll need to have you folks contact me with any details on what to write in runes. I will update my profile to include my email address. We don't hafta worry about this until they get shipped to me, but if you already know what you want, send it along and I can get the conversion to runes ahead of time, so you can see what it will look like.

I'll email Uncle Bill with my address and such.

Other aftermarket mods are available from me as well.
Steel treatments--
1.I can plate steel in coppper, gild inn gold or copper. This looks good, but is reserved more for deco pieces, as heavy use will wear the gilding or plating off.
2. Blueing - I can cold blue blades, or parts of blades, or do it instead of/in addition to etching. Blueing makes a blade rust resistant, and is a bold contrast to the silver.
3. Etching--already discussed. I can etch brass as well as steel, so habakis, bolsters, and buttcaps are fair game.

Handle treatments--
1. Carving - I can carve horn or bone with good detail and relief. I have many ideas on this, and can entertain your ideas on this as well.
2. Pinwork - I can make copper or brass pins from small gauge wire stock, then hammertap them into the handle in patterns or as embellishments or accents to the handle carving.
3. Wire inlay -- related to the pinwork, but a channel is cut in the handle material to accept the wire, which is secured at both ends of the channel by a hole that fits onto the wire. Runes lend themselves to this treatment.

Here are some pix illustrating thse techniques:

Baleard, etched and copper plating on certain 'fire' embellishments.

Seax handle, carved elk antler and copper pin embellishments. To get the hi conntrast detail, I covered the handle in India ink then hand rubbed. This knife is home to over sixy homemade pins.

I've posted bluinng pix b4 as well.

I'm sure we can discuss this further, if anyonne is interested. When you email me the inscription you want, lemme knnow if any of these other mods strike yer fancy.

The best way for this to work (for Bill, anyway) is to have Keith buy "X" number of knives directly from Bill. That way he doesn't have to worry about who has paid or not paid, or which ones go to Keith and which don't, etc.

So, if you're on the "Taker's" list, I'm going to recommend that we all send our payment straight to Keith - including the cost of runes/etching/etc. + s/h from Indiana.

Keith - we'll need your OK on this.

Well, if I understand correctly (check my thoughts), ALL HI seaxes come this way, and then I distribute from here, (only the Confirmed takers tho). Sounds simple enuf.

I guess I just await all payment, then send a check to Uncle, then he ships the whole bundle. I'll get to making the triangle boxes...got to examine enuf of em.:)

Also, I guess I'll hafta ask at the post office how mucn it costs to ship them. Anybody know a better way to deduce shiping costs? I assume we'll wanna ship insured?

I'm new to this distribution schtick.

Have I missed any critical details? Pen, did you do this to distribute the pen knives?

Keith

I'm with Sarge, mark me down as a "taker" as well. I'd like runes too, but I'd want to consult with Keith first for recommendations.

Put me down w/ runes. I haven't had any good saex for a long time. (Did I say that out loud?) :o
