How many of you EDC an expensive ($300-$400 and up) Knife

I love knives but in no way am I willing to buy an expensive knife as a status symbol when a less expensive knife cuts all I need cutting.

Status symbol?
You do realize that carrying an expensive knife as a status symbol doesn't work, right?
99.9999% of the time no one, and I mean no one but yourself would understand or care that you spent that much on a knife.

If you meant a "Have everyone think I'm a nut for spending that much on a knife" symbol, then okay...but even then you'd have to run around telling people how much it cost, because nobody other than us here thinks knives could possibly cost that much.

Well said. I wear $5000 underwear as a status symbol. Trust me.

It's mostly about having nice things for some people, i like high quality because, I don't have to buy as many and there's usually confidence from the maker as well as great customer service and return policy.

Sorry for sounding like a snob, but my first real pocket knife was a small bocote sebenza, a gift for quitting cigarettes. It set a standard on what a quality knife for me is, I got a $300 spyderco southard and can notice major quality differences.
A $1 Chinese folder can cut as well, why don't you carry one if cutting is all you need. Right, you care about the knife right?

I can sympathize with the OP. In the end decided a sebenza while a knife I liked was just too expensive to EDC. It wasn't like performance was light years ahead of more inexpensive options. MY price point is less than ~$200 for a knife I can carry without worry.

Losing a ritter grip didn't hurt that much, but I still hope i"ll find it at a buddy's house underneath a seat cushion years later. That's the most expensive thing I've misplaced. If I lost a sebenza...

Sure it is. You have to have the financial status to afford the thing to begin with and then the knife becomes a symbol to you (if no one else) of achieving both the financial status and sophisticated taste and knowledge associated with knowing about finer cutlery.

Guilty as charged...

This is in my pocket right now:

Definately not a status symbol here. Most people couldn't tell a $5 knife from a $500 knife. The user knows and appreciates the quality of , or the finish of a more expensive knife.

No you don't.
Just about every job I've had has been minimum wage...most of those have been part time minimum wage.

Yet I have some really nice knives. :)
No car, small apartment, no savings at all...but I sure do have some great knives.

The only one you impress by saying what you paid for an expensive knife is the thief that wants to steal it. No one I know is impressed with what I paid for what I EDC (usually 300+) most think im a little strange for paying so much for a knife so I quit saying anything about price a long time ago.

Not only don't I EDC a $400 knife, I don't even own a $400 knife... I'm not in that tax bracket and knives are too easy to lose. If my toy fund passes $300-$400 I'm looking for a new gun, not a new knife that'll never get used.

Ah yes, guns...

Glad I have a felony... don't need another money pit (aka hobby).

I wonder how many of us "knife enthusiasts" have funded our passion through the sale of a gun, I know I have, just a matter of opinion and what stokes the fire. As far as too easy to lose, either on a belt sheath or clipped to right front pocket stays with me without concern. Now carrying a cellphone that is a different story.

I try to edc all of my knives, it all depends on the situation. The following are in rotation on a regular basis:

Large CRK seb insingo (85% of the time)
Small CRK seb moonsong
Benchmade gold class 940-121
Lefty CRK umnumzaan.

One that used to be in the pocket on a regular basis was a lg micarta lefty seb that I accidentally dropped into an electric arc furnace while working up high. :-(. (Not so easy come, easy go)

I usually edc my Beats or my santiago I love to switch it up. Shit my sheath is almost 300$ haha. The cheapest knife i probably edc is a flytanium but the rest are customs so I always edc something rare and valuable. Stupid? Yes but they flip the best.

nobody ever finds it silly to carry a $400 smart phone. so why not a knife?

LOL! So true! I carry (and have lost) many expensive items (I'm getting better at retention-LOL!) and I tend to buy a new iPhone every few years when I deem the upgrade worth it. EVERYTHING you own will someday belong to someone else-use it!! I don't enjoy almost anything "just in my having it!" Experiencing something is so much more life affirming and joyful than just possessing something! Burn that artsy candle, shoot that collectible! ETC!!! :D

A knife is so far from a status symbol to me. I drive a 98 malibu with no heat, wear some pretty ragged clothes, there are holes next to my pinky toes in both my shoes, and I carry a $400 seb everywhere I go. I like nice knives, bottom line. If I wanted a status symbol I would by a shiny new rolex or some luxury car for the world to see. There's probabely about ten people I know that know how much my knives cost. I learned a while ago that its better when no one knows at all. I had to learn that the hard way when I was scolded from family members for spending that much on a pocket knife. I have been looking at a few knives lately that make me wonder if I could really bring my self to use them like some shiros and some fancy customs, but those knives are so far outside my budget that quite frainkly it doesn't matter. I sort of tap out around $400.
But regaurding the OP, you're darn right I use my expensive knives!

To me, it is a status symbol, but not to show off to others.
Growing up, I had second hand everything, stuff just good enough to get by. No luxury items, or nothing more than we absolutely needed.
When I wake up, and get to decide what to carry, from the best knives in the world, it's a symbol of accomplishment to myself.
I have to work hard for my family, so my knife money comes from the custom flashlights I build. I love the hobby, so I did whatever I could to be able to have quality knives. I found a way.

I rarely ever take my knives out just to show them to someone, but when I do, it's " oh that's cool, but why"
So I understand when people say it's not a status symbol, unless your talking to fellow knife nuts. That's why we show off to each other, here on the forum. It's the only place worth showing them off.
From the edc thread, I can tell you who likes high end knives, and who likes budget buys. Do I think any different of them, nope.

I believe it's like that for many people of us . Not really to show off to others, but to have a sense of " I carry the best, not for anyone else, but for me"

For fixed, I carry a Busse Game Warden. For folder, I carry a CRKT (one of the M16 models). I once lost a rather expensive folder because the clip failed and it slid out of my pocket at some point during the day while I was sitting down. Ever since, I carry inexpensive folders that can take a beating.
