Where I have carried un-concealed (urban), it was an obvious attempt to demonstrate to some jerk which criminal intent to stay the hell away from me. But I would also have a concealed gun with me as well. I would probably choose the same sort of thing with knives. For example, Charlie Mike's choice of a larger fixed blade for un-concealed carry for me is an obvious attempt to tell people (criminals or would be criminals) to stay the hell away. I doubt he cleans his finger nails with the larger fixed blade.![]()
I understand this reasoning but I don't think we have good statistics on this either way.
The counter-argument is that open carry of weapons (guns or knives) has a tendency to aggravate and accelerate situations that could become violent. That is, bad guys can also see an openly carried weapon as a challenge or provocation.
This is the reasoning I've heard repeatedly as to why more states allow concealed carry than those who allow open carry. I prefer concealed carry but again, we don't have stats to back up either side on this.
I will add that as a cyclist and one who's ridden coast-coast, I feel more vulnerable to bad guys when I'm on a bike than at any other time. It's difficult to maintain good situational awareness and you're often in places where you are out of reach of any help. I've lived in "dangerous" urban settings and by far, feel more threatened in quasi-rural areas that are relatively near large urban centers. A public park in an outer edge suburb near Detroit or Chicago or Boston is a prime place to get into trouble as you're likely to encounter young thugs who want to demonstrate they are as tough as the real thugs in the big city, only they can do so in the relatively secluded and unprotectable remote places.
