Hunters. I would like your opinions on these pictures

If the butcher shop was run by you, we all would starve... .... where's my steak?!?!?!

There's a difference between killing something because it's a pest or so you can eat it, and torturing it.

I'm not going to pass judgement on the pics because I just don't have enough information.

My friend is right..... Reading this thread does feel like watching the Special Olympics.

Wow, you sure did contribute to the conversation with that briliant little nugget of wisdom, thank you so much and keep up the good work.

what i want to know ,and i don't care about the ethics,is the technich with the knife.
are they stabing up under the ribcage to get to the hart or just doing multible stabs to the belly
can you smash throught the ribs with the large knives there using?
would a throught slice be quicker (i know the dogs are in the way)
what kind of knives where used and what blade length ect
and what would you use , next time
any chance of getting bit ?would a glove help?

I use a knife with with a min blade length of 9". Shorter is acceptable, but sometimes it will not reach the heart of the larger hogs, 9" will reach the heart of any hog. You usually stab it low behind the shoulder, through the lungs and the heart. If done correctly, the boar will die quickly as will anything if stabbed in the heart.

these aren't mine, they're from anOTher forum I browse often. I feel like this is a good place where there are real sportsmen here and I would like to know your feelings on this.

Makes me want to hunt some hogs before the small minded, mean spirited, freedom hating, mentally deranged animal rights extremists make it illegal.

I would hardly call someone who disagrees with this method of hunting a freedom hating, mentally deranged animal rights extremist.

As far as technique is concerned you want a deep penetrating stab to the heart/aorta area. The first pig I killed with a knife (I've never hunted them like in the photos) was with a ka-bar. I hit him twice and nearly cut the heart in half. The pig I killed this weekend had one large hole in her heart and died really quick. Sometimes here they use a long thin, pointy knife (on smaller pigs) to make a single stab through the front left that gets the aorta and heart. Cutting the aorta results in a quicker death as the heart is pumping with all its force. I wouldn't want to try that on a large feral hog though.

In terms of damage done, a stick with a knife isn't much different than putting a broadhead through an animal. My brother once got a real clean passthrough shot on a doe. She flinched, glanced around, walked off, got wobbly, layed down, and died.

How do animals process pain? I don't know. The pig I killed this weekend seemed more upset to be pulled from the pen by her ears than getting stuck. She actually calmed down once she was hit with the knife, slowed down, and died.

I once hit a pig running past me with a 9mm 124 grain hydrashock, double lung, perfect mushroom. The round stopped on the far side just under the skin, maybe 14 inches of penetration. That pig took far longer to die than either that I've stabbed with a knife. Mac

Yep, I gots me a pig on some fenced in land...
I let my four biggest dogs chase the pig till they corner it against the fence.

I then let them rip up the pig for a while till it's safe for me to approach.
Then I stab the pig to death with my big bowie knife.

Yeah, I guess you can say that I'm quite the hunter...a real sportsman.
I do it for the adventure ya'know...

ive seen several videos here on the forums of hog kills. not my style, i dont think i would send my dog in after a hog either. too much risk of getting me or the dog injured.

but i have no problem with anyone who wants to hunt this way. i know knifemaker greg lightfoot is an avid knife hunter. i spoke to him briefly about it at a show.

and although it may appear cruel, i understand death for the hog is rather quick once the hunter enters the picture. unless he's a boob.

im thinking of doing this soon
ive got a cs trailmaster and a rat bowie but they seem to wide
i think a long thin blade would be better
any sugestions on make and model
and what are you using in the vidio?

In these Pics it appears to me that the picture next to the fence may be part of a training session I could be wrong.

I actually know some folks who hunt small game with grey hounds apparently this is what they are bread for origionally (Hense the rabbit at the races)

They also use Hawks and Falcons to hunt.

Hey JackBauer I actually get what you were trying to say when everybody called you a racist, We dont actually know 100% weather these pigs feel pain and making an arbitrary statement that they don't just feels wrong.

I have heard many anti-hunters make statement about fish, to separate fishermen from hunters, I have never seen any data that it is true of any species. But I do agree that most animals seem to process pain differntly than we do.

As for me I would Love to try pig hunting, especially with a spear or knife, I dont know if i would use this technique but then I dont know enough about the sport to make an informed decision

Its kind of like watching the police Take down a criminal on TV. It may look like excessive Force until you have actually had to do it and realize how much force it actually takes.

It don't matter much...
That Trailmaster will do just fine.
If you don't kill the pig on the first stab, no sweat, you just keep stabbing him over an over...
After all, once the dogs have ripped him up and have got a hold on him he wont be going anywhere, so you can take your time.
And don't let all of that sqealing bother you...
It might sound like the pig's in agony, but they don't "PROCESS" pain like we do.
It just looks and sounds like they're in pain...
So who cares if you don't kill him quickly?
Who cares how many dog bites and stabs it takes to finally kill the pig?
That's the beauty of this SPORT!!!

And you're really going to love it!
Once you have a bunch of dogs savagely tear up a pig, you'll be able to kill that pig with confidence.
And then you will be a REAL HUNTER!!!

I am a hunter and a houndsman, I have hunted various game including hogs with dogs for over 20 years. People, hunting is a brutal blood sport, when you kill an animal it is never a pretty or nice thing. There are certain areas of the US that if you are not hunting with dogs you are not going to kill very much game, the brush country of Texas comes to mind, those pictures look like they are from there.

Right now I have 3 mountain curs which pound for pound are the toughest things on 4 feet, I hunt squirrels, possums and coons with them. If they catch a coon or possum on the ground you get what you had in those pictures, that is the way dogs hunt, wild dogs included. Ever watched a pride of lions pull down a wildebeast, it's not pretty either. Most houndsman love their dogs and go out of their way to take care of them, look at those pits, they are very sleek and well taken care of and they all have cut collars on.

I do not hunt hogs with dogs anymore, I have no reason too, I hunt them on the ground with a 44 magnum pistol or a .223 rifle. Where I hunt hogs, in south GA, I don't need dogs, if I lived in Del Rio Texas I would. Chris
