is there any chance that busse kin go CMP3V?

the term "propriety heat treat" doesn't apply nowadays. Specially where you have facilities the does professional heat treating and mettalurgists that works for them.

That being said, INFI is a very unique steel that Jerry perfected.

Sure it applies these days and it always will. The way I understand it, Busse's heat treat is performed in house and the complete process is unknown to others. Even if a third party heat treated his blades, the process could still be legally protected and unable to be disclosed or used for any other manufacturer.

So awesome that Jerry himself chimed in on this. I have to go with the fact that if Jerry tests and sells 3v.....it will be the best 3v out there. If he sells it.....we WILL buy it for sure! Gotta stay tuned to this thread!

That's if it out performes SR-101..... which is unlikely. Similair swamp knives in 3V will cost much more for the same performance.

Well, I am sure this will come out. I am shipping out my 911 to JP today or monday.

That's interesting. Assuming you mean Guy at Survive? Sorry, and who are you?

Niagara Specialty Metals. I believe they are the main distributor for Crucible's steels? At any rate they are a very large one and have been around for a very long time.

I think 3V would be just as expensive as INFI so I don't really see it replacing SR101.

Not sure how much it costs, but there are lots of knife companies using it so production should be much higher than INFI, thus, price should be lower. But it will certainly be more expensive than SR101.

We are currently testing 3V against SR-101 with the exact same grind geometry. Our tests are not complete but should be soon.

We are only interested in tests with the exact same grind geometry and tests which are done with mechanical testing. There are too many variants when testing by hand.

Should be fun.

We'll post results here when completed.

I love when Jerry shows up to say "Hi we will gladly destroy some knives for the sake of the knife community."!!!

Does anyone wish to speculate on what mechanical testing Jerry might have in mind? Maybe CATRA? and what else?

3V is a very good steel. I've field tested it along side INFI and SR101. My (non-scientific) observations are as follows:

-3V takes a keener edge than INFI but SR101 seems to get the sharpest.
-INFI holds an edge longer than 3V under use/abuse. SR101 holds an edge similar to INFI.
-SR101 is the least stain resistant, followed by 3V. I use INFI in salt water without issue.

Conclusion: As said many times before.... everything is a compromise. Personally, I view 3V as a slightly tougher and more stainless version of SR101. I'm not sure I see much benefit in going with 3v over infi or SR101. It fits sort of in the middle of the two.

I believe SR101 in 6" or smaller blades is simply amazing. For larger blades that may be chopping, etc... INFI is the best I've used because it just doesn't ever get 'dull' and always maintains a useable edge. 3V will dull. And when it does it's a biatch to sharpen. Infi sharpens easily as does SR101.

Just my thoughts. They are all great knife steels... but different in their own way.

The part I bolded there is why I am such a fan of SR101 and similar low alloy tool steels like O1 and A2. While they don't hold an edge as long as some of the newer stuff you can put an insanely fine, sharp, and stable edge on them and its is very easy to get back to that edge. For me I will take more frequent sharpening but a better edge at the end than to not have to sharpen as often.

I think calling this a real world compario as opposed to VS makes sense. I can add zwear to the mix or leave it out but I get alot of pms about zwear and 3V.
I hand sand any profile changes and use 800, 1200 and a 3000 kings and a strop. I am open whatever

JP, the syko 911 should arrive tomorrow. Go out and enjoy it and beat it some.

I am directing Gaston444 here so he can pony up a Trailmaster for this test. If he really wants to see what happens and that steel and HT are far more important than an edge that anyone can put on a blade, he can do so.

And that's because 3v were never made to be used on knives.
