is there any chance that busse kin go CMP3V?

This discussion was looking very good and promising..

And then a post from the Boss Hog himself!

Love it, and am looking forward to the results from all. Exciting stuff.

Jerry will be able to do something no one else can, test the 3V steel with the comprehensive Busse heat treat that makes the 52100 as good as it is. That may be the golden ticket and a nice addition to the line up. This is not intended to take anything away from those who heat treat 3V now, as they have made the name for it that it has now.

Nothing would surprise me. I could show you test results with Busse heat-treated 154CM that would blow your mind.

Honestly, I can't imagine why I would ever need an alloy more capable than SR101. Even if 3V turns in better test results, it's not going to knock my Camp Tramp out of my BoB. Just ain't happening!

Sr101 is really good steel, and I love my swamp rats, but it depends what your using your knives for. I hunt a lot, and skin plenty of animals, I can tell you infi nor sr101 hold up as well as cpm3v. Sorry, but that's my perspective. This is for general outdoor, batonning skinning, gutting. Infi is definitely a tougher steel, but won't hold an edge as long as I would like, neither does sr101. For general all around, they're both really good. But I prefer 3v, but I still won't get rid of my rats.

You don't have to be sorry, that is your perspective. For me 3V didn't hold up well at all and no where near INFI that's for sure.

What I like to see is SR101, SR77 and INFI's with thinner grind angle coming out from the factory. not some obtuse angle where it gets really really thick going towards the edge.

That's crazy, considering I have tried several 3v knives from different makers, gso, fearhman, bark river, all sharpened on my work sharp, working elk, pigs, deer, and cattle. 3v holds a better edge than sr101. That's obvious, considering its make up anyway, not sure how anyone could say sr101 will hold a better edger, maybe with busse's heat treat it could be a little tougher, but I'm sure with their heat treat, 3v could blow sr101 away. The only upside I see is sr101/52100 will be cheaper than a cpm steel.

Infi isn't even in the same class as far as edge retention from my observations. As far as toughness, nothing beats busse! Infi is the best I've seen in that class, but for general use, I would pick 3v.

Not sure what u t doing wrong but when infi is ground at the same efge thickness and angle you will find your observation to be different. My infi holds an edge longer than the 3v I had.

Frankly, edge retention is multifaceted…. meaning it loses sharpness in different ways.

-Wear
-Chipping
-Deformation
-Corrosion

I'm pretty sure that 3V is significantly more wear resistant than INFI, which could explain the better edge retention when processing animals. Though it is a two sided coin in that it will take more passes given similar geometry to resharpen 3V vs INFI. However, INFI should be better in regards to retaining an edge from deformation or corrosion. Also possible that the INFI you've used had a burr/wire edge which quickly wore off leaving it blunted.

I'll tell you this much, if Jerry heat treats 3V, I am buying it

the term "propriety heat treat" doesn't apply nowadays. Specially where you have facilities the does professional heat treating and mettalurgists that works for them.

That being said, INFI is a very unique steel that Jerry perfected.

Jerry tapped into a system of HT that no one else uses. I know what it is and I can tell you know one else uses it. if he decided that 3v can be done with his HT system, no one else will beat it...
