what Pegs said...
he knows his sh!t :)
yep, go with and and never look back :p

Don't listen to Pegs. He'll get you questioning your methods and set on a path of constant improvement. It would be much easier to just ignore him and keep doing things the same way whether your practices are ideal or not. ;)

Can't remember if I posted this already. Ah well.

My dad picked this axe up for $1 (I know have my Dad sourcing axes for me in Massachusetts/CT). Turns out it's a Douglas Axe co. axe. It's in really nice condition for its age which is 1900s or earlier. You can see the old forge line on the before pic.

Any guesses on a pattern? Yankee?

Any guesses on a pattern? Yankee?

Acccording to Allen Klenman in Axe Makers of North America, Axe Makers didn't standardize patterns until about 1900, so it's possible it could be one of those or Douglas Axe had it's own name for the pattern.

Looks alot like a Yankee. Kind of hard without a top view. But then again you ever seen one of these south of the Mason Dixen line?

Okay. Flea market season seems to be over till spring:( So my axe buying has slowed down a bit.

But I still admit to checking things out on the web. Every once in a while, among all the totally overpriced stuff, you can find either a bargain or something that is a good deal to you personally. The axe head below--though certainly not dirt cheap--I think was a bit of both.

It's a 4 lb (and 0.7 oz) Collins Legitimus with no hammer marks or real corrosion, just a bit of patina. The edge is still pretty darn near sharp.

Your Collins is a beauty. Pristine heads don't come up that often on the Bay and seem to get premium prices. A great find for you.

Tom

Ouch! Couldn't see it till after the wire wheel, but there's a crack in the edge.

Now to see how honorable the seller is.

On the brighter side, I had another come in from that same site today. I may just be able to salvage the handle on this one. It's a Kelly Flint Edge Connecticut with a good stamp and marked 3.2 on the butt.

Here it is after a very quick clean up.

Daamn. I want one of those.

I hit an estate sale this morning and just missed the axe. Funny how I keep finding broad hatchets when I am looking for boys axes for my boys. Oh well, this Plumb makes a good straight hafted companion for the offset Craftsman I am finishing up. The Stanley angle finder, Franz Swaty hone and Dixon Somethingorother mallet were bonuses.

A good day!

A Kelly Perfect, Volcan, Registered. Boys axe with wedge outs might have a name. Collins hook is a Hartford Legitimus. M W H Co cruiser. All priced right from a store. That black DBL bit in the middle is a Coast to Coast, I figure it got lost in the feeding frenzy :o.

Jesus! All you guys hit home runs this weekend.

John, seeing the crack on the Legitimus just made my heart sink.

Cedar, nice haul. If you don't already have a white rubber mallet then that thing is gonna get a work out. Mine is used repeatedly on every hang.

Garry, you got tonnage there. What's the little hatchet with the upturned toe?

I already have a Home Cheapo white rubber mallet. I picked this mallet up and at first I thought it was wood with thick leather wrapped around it. I thought it was cool so I bought it. Upon further inspection it is rawhide rolled up to form a mallet head. Its a rawhide mallet. Can't wait to use it on my next hang.

BTW, if you ever get a rawhide mallet keep it out of reach of the dog at all times. I got lucky and caught him before he started gnawing on it but it was covered in slobber.

Its a no name, drop forged in Sweden stamp. The thing seems to never have been sharpened or the poll struck, light suface rust on part of it. That big single bit right beside it is very nice also, dirty as all get out with light surface rust, not abused at all, might be more stamps under the grime but it is marked U P(Union Pacific?).
I did pretty well with black smith tools also:).
