It followed me home

Another Sunday at the flea market. This time I exercised a bit of restraint and passed on a hatchet and unmarked Baltimore. But I did manage to come away with a pretty clean True Temper Perfect:)

Here it is in the rough.

And here it is after a few minutes of care.

Another beauty saved:)

And here's a follow-up on last weeks flea market find. This one was in much worse shape, and took more grinding and filing, but as a bonus the handle was salvageable.

Thank you.

I have a bunch of handles from House. This thing weighs 3 lbs. 9 oz. even after all the clean up. What would you suggest?

For a multi-purpose full size I like handles in the 32"-34" range. Sometimes those lengths are hard to find. If the choices are 30" or 36" then I'd pick a 36" for splitting and a 30" for chopping. At 3^9 it might be underhung on a 30" and feel a little clunky.

I agree with Pegs here. For me a head at 3lb 9oz on a 30" handle is a chopping machine. No chunkiness to speak of. My very best chopper is over 5lbs on a 30". If it is more of a splitter due to the geometry then I would go longer, like Pegs said.

Wow, I'll say - great job! What did you use to smooth the poll, belt sander?

great axe! was a True Temper Perfect
assessment was also perfect! did tou salvage the wedges?:p

One further update on this claw hatchet. I rehung it on an 18" riggers axe handle. It feels and handles much better now and it chops better, too. It was just a little too clunky on that short handle.

Here's an interesting little tool I made to dig out wedges. It's just made from a scrap of unknown high carbon steel. I hardened it and tempered it back to purple. It's real handy. It's tapered to match the shape of a wedge.

call me stupid, but i can't imagine how it works! any picture in action?

I drive it into the kerf, pushing down while hammering it forward to dig out the wedge. I'll post pics next time I use it. It gets wedges out.

Picked this one up today for $2 in a local used tool store. It started out a bit ugly...

Ah, but then the magic of the wire wheel :)

The handle is shot and there's a bit of mushrooming on the poll, but the eye is fine and overall it's in good shape with a great stamp.

Very nice
I've always wanted one of those for some reason, even though I really don't like hatchets all that much.

Wow that looks great. I may have to start looking for one of those.

Very nice find and good job.
I've seen only one of those TT Tomahawks in my life (and bought it). Ditto for the Tommy Axe (claw hatchet). I'm still looking for the Tommy Dynamic hatchet.

Nice job on the TT tomahawk John. I carry mine a lot. What are you going to use for a handle? The original handle seems like an integral part of the overall design and is impossible to find. I'm sure a regular hatchet or hammer handle will work though.

Thanks. I don't know if the handle on it now is original. Anyone?

I may even sell this one. Just not sure how much I'll use it. What's it good for? :)
