Joint ABS/Guild Show

We were told at the Guild show to get your tables early, because when the 75 are gone they're gone. First come first served.

This will be the Greatest knife show ever. The Greatest makers from the ABS and the KMG coming together in one place, a dream come true.

I hope so. I particularly hope that none of "the Greatest makers from the ABS and the KMG" get locked out of the show by the table limit and first come first served policy. Time will tell.

I'm grateful to the Guild board and the ABS board and committees for working together to make this show possible. The potential for the show and the TYPE of show is exciting. Not for years has anything similar been done. Let's get behind it and we'll all benefit in more ways than selling a few knives.

I would encourage, challenge even, all knife makers, whether ABS or KMG, to dig deep and bring something, literally, to their tables that is new for them and innovative. We have a year so there is time to conceive a plan and make something special for this event. New styles, new designs, new challenging characteristics, new embellishments, are all great. Use this show as an introduction of that new project. Take advantage of news releases and social media.

I look forward to the show.

Being a collector and living in the Kansas City Area I can provide some perspective to the venue announced earlier. Whether you take the information as positive or negative these are my views IMO. The positive is that the location is in a historical area. The negative is constant construction, parking is difficult, especially if other events are taking place.

I can provide more views if you would like, whether be here, via email or phone. pigsticker73@kc.rr.com or 816-985-5634

I will be providing some pictures that I took this afternoon of the surrounding area and hotel.

This is the inside views of the lobby area.

Nice sitting area across from the hotel.

This is the historic Folley Theatre (next door to the hotel)

The Historic Hotel Phillips is literally 1 block away....

Thanks for chiming in on this Ryan, I was hoping you would add some local knowledge.

Nice photo bomb with the Charger :)

NOW to the FOOD within walking distance to the hotel...These places are not cheap but are incredible.

The Savoy Grill - Place for Seafood. Since 1903, the Savoy Grill offers a wide variety of choices for a wonderful meal, from live Maine Lobster to delicious steaks. 3 blocks from the hotel.

The Majestic - A Place for Steaks. The Majestic Restaurant offers a true Kansas City dining experience like no other. Enjoy a great steak and fine wine in our main dining room alongside a grand bar dating back to 1910, or have dinner in our lower level jazz club, the site of an actual speakeasy during prohibition, all while listening to some of Kansas City’s best jazz musicians seven nights a week. After dinner, guests may inquire about The Pendergast Club, our private cigar and whiskey club located on the third floor of the restaurant. An extensive wine list, creative cocktails by nationally renowned bartender Shawn Moriarty, a list of over 100 whiskeys, and a sinful selection of delectable homemade desserts provide the perfect accompaniment to the meal and the music.

Looking for BBQ?

Closest to the venue is Arthur Bryants. This BBQ legend was founded in the early 1920's.
Jack Stack (5 minutes) Since 1957. Certified Angus Beef® Steaks, fresh seafood, award---winning Lamb Ribs, and mouth---watering side dishes like Hickory Pit Beans and Cheesy Corn Bake.

Oklahoma Joes (which has changed their name to Joes Kansas City). Original is at a gas station. (9 minutes away). In 2009, Anthony Bourdain named Oklahoma Joe’s as one of “Thirteen Places to Eat Before You Die” in an article for Men’s Health magazine.

Thanks for your help, we can use your help with the area. Things to do and eating places.
Thanks Gene Baskett President KMG

We have a great opportunity to have a very good show. It's absolutely a mandate that we have the best knifemakers in the world in that room and with that we can draw in the best knife collectors and everyone will benefit from this very positive gathering of "the best" the craft has to offer. I'd sum it up to say you can't go fishing without bait. I'm looking forward to this great event. And a big Texas thank you to everyone who worked to make this a reality.

Legendary is right. Lots of memories (and great BBQ) there on 18th Street. My brother was visiting me around 1980, we were on our way to a Royals game, and stopped at Arthur's for a bite first. The place was packed, which was common. My brother got one of their combo ham and beef sandwiches with three slices of white bread crossways in his throat, the place got extremely quiet. I had to perform a Heimlich procedure on him, and we were back in business. Kansas City is full of great places like this to eat. Just go at a slow pace. :)

Thanks for all the updates, Ryan. You and Mary will be valuable assets as this show gets closer. It is early in the game, and already shaping up to be a great one.

Has anyone from CKCA contacted the two organizations to see if it possible to get a booth/table for CKCA to have an ability to talk with makers that are not members yet or other collectors coming to the show? Also maybe see if Collector members of CKCA
could come to the show with the same standing as Honorary members?

Murray,
Anyone that would like to become an Honorary member of The Knifemakers Guild should contact me. It's a simple matted if filling out an application and paying a small fee.

Sorry for my error above. Having also been associated (many years as President) of the CKCC I inadvertently used those letters instead of CKCA. Anyway, I am aware of Guild Honorary Membership but thought that the CKCA could be used to promote knifemakers and collectors at the show with either a table or booth and maybe Kevin would chime in. Many makers that are CKCA members offer discounts to collectors who are CKCA members and of course it is of benefit to makers to become members of CKCA. CKCA each year has a booth at Blade and doing so at this show would be beneficial to all. By extending the same benefits to CKCA members as one gets from being an Honorary Member of the Guild would also be of benefit to the ABS as they would then have equal footing in the show and offer more opportunities for other collectors to benefit from show attendance and hopefully increase the same. Just some thoughts that could be tossed around among Kevin, the Guild and the ABS.

Murray,
I think it would be good for the CKCA to have a booth at this show. You would have to join The Knifemakers Guild as an associate member then you could pay for a table and be at the show.
Again, collectors can join The Knifemakers Guild as Honorary Members and receive the benefits of that membership.
Please contact me for further information about joining The Knifemakers Guild,be it,
Knifemaker,Associate,Youth,Honorary,ABS Master Smith,etc.
