thats a nice pic. I too have hammered on ka bars as well. I just got a new one a few weeks ago and its first time out in the woods involved a hammer to spine. It didnt break just chunked up the spine a bit. I havent tried prying with it as I have seen another one like yours bend badly. My only gripe about my new kabar is the kydex sheath fell apart the first time I wore it. The kydex were the button snap is snapped off when I went to unsnap it to draw it. glad it has two snaps.

just talked to Jerry Busse. He explained it to me what happened was a stress fracture from beating on it with a pipe wrench for about 8 hours the weekend before. He said hes going to post pics and explain better on this thread. I love swamprat and busse combat!

 KEE-RIPES MAN!

I guess their warranty is the best in the land. If they'll cover that, they'll cover anything.

8 hours??????????

I'm not gonna ask what you were trying to accomplish, but I AM gonna go to the swamp and buy me a M-6 now.

yeah the weekend I went out camping I beat it with a pipe wrench for about 8 hours total. I chopped down some 8" trees. Bigger than my knife was. The blade got real hot and I stopped a few times for a beer. I was using a log but it wasnt driving it through fast enough so I went to my truck and grabbed a pipe wrench. He said it caused stress fractures and then when I was prying it side to side in the 2x8 it cracked.

edit:well at least I now know what not to do to it.

8 HOURS of beating a knife with a pipe wrench?

WOW.

8 hours is nothing. I once Beat on Oldducci for 12 hours with a pipe and he was still kickin. The old fart won't give up the ghost for nuthin.

yah, he tried to get me as well, but everytime he konked me on the noggin, his head hurt as well, so he had to stop.

Well I didnt think it caused a problem because it was still in one piece when I was done.I know that the use was a little excessive. It sure was a helluva lot of fdun and a helluva workout. I just assumed it wouldnt give becuae it lived through that. From now on I will stick to hitting it with wood. He explained how the pipe wrench's cast iron was harder than the spine on a differentially tempered knief and thats why it moved the metal all around and the fact that the whole blade was in the wood wedged in no wjhere for the harmonic vibrations to go but into the blade since the tip couldnt resonate or dampen. I should og used a bigger knife and it would of helfd out longer but still bad due to the metal hardness differemnces. Next tiem it will be wood mallet or a big old limb. I was so amazed that it held that long I thought it was invincible. Pretty close but it does ave limits. I told him about my idea of the FBM and a sledge hammer and he said that it wasnt a good idea unless I had a custom one made with a softer metal so it would bend under such sever e use with a laugh. Back to using wood to baton it through except emergenct.y It wasnt a lemon just me.

I'm starting to see that up here in NJ. Tree trimmers out on a limb with about 6" of knife and a big ole pipe wrench. Not one those get into any size space pipe wrenchs. A turn off the water to the county sized pipe wrench.

Live and learn. :D

How does a pipe wrench fit into tree trimming. Is there any twisting or torquing of limbs:D

Maybe they are plumbers and part time tree trimmers.:jerkit:

Wicked1, I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your wife. I'm married, and we have one child, a beautiful 6-month-old girl. While you're out driving, remember that there are other wives, daughters, and knife-enthusiasts sharing the road.

You could turn your knife-abuse habits into a business. HI has a "break-it-and-we'll-give-you-two" warranty. So far they've never been called on it. I say you go for it.
