Kershaw Knives News Thread

I would love to see the Tirade blade with a 3D G10 handle from Kershaw! I've been wanting this blade for a while, but can't afford the customs that I've only seen it in thus far. Santa Thomas - please please please????

Jeremy I agree with you it would be nice to see a Kershaw Taboo, I really like the blade design in the Taboo.
Hey, I have a question I am going to take apart my speed bump (tomarrow after I get a set of small torx bits) and I thought I read a post where you said to open the blade but not all the way to the locked position. Is that true or do I leave it closed or all the way in the locked position.

Jamar, leave the blade at a 90 degree angle to the handle. That way the blade is not under tension when you remove the pivot screw.

I'm pretty fond of the stud lock and would buy more. I do think it should be used more often. However, there's a significant percentage of BF members that seem to despise it (I don't know why). Even benchmade produces a lot of folders that are not axis locks.

They've got one lockback and at least three liner locks for sale right now off the top of my head, not to mention the balis. At least some diversity is needed, no one agrees universally on locks.

But ultimately, yeah, I've love to see more stud locks.

hey- been a while since I posted on BF.

I have used kershaw for eyars, the first was a kershaw/KAI blade trader I bought for camping. Ever since then I've been hooked.

I have a mini-mojo that I really like(other than sharpening that curved blade), only thing is that stud lock.
I'm torn between loving and hating it. Yeah, It's super easy to close one handed, and it is pretty easy to celan. But one big drawback, is the positioning of it, just forward of the pivot, some say it's a benefit, but with the lock at the top of the frame/blade, I think it's a disadvantage. Just holding it in the store, I felt that if your hand was to slip, you could easily hit the stud lock, allowing the knife to close. Right on your hand.

Well, I bought it anyways, well aware of that possibility.
I have been very very careful(as with any knife) and a few times I've slipped and thumb hit the stud lock. As soon as this happens, it closes the blade. Anyone familiar with the stud-locks should know the mechanics in play here.
fortunatly, I haven't cut myself with it , ebing aware of what's going on and dropping it etc.

just my $.o2 to why people don't like the stud locks. wet hands and a stud lock could be nasty combo...

With that being said, I've misplaced it(probably left it at my dad's house) and have been carrying a few other knives(a vapor mostly) for EDC. And, yeah, Almost everytime, I try to close it with the stud.... hahah, guess I'm hooked on the kershaws

I have a Storm II that I love - except for the recurve blade. After using it for a while now, I think the recurve is a useful design that I've grown to appreciate.

Recurve is my favorite all around blade profile. It's a unique combination of beautiful looks (in my opinion) and top notch slicing.

I'm glad you did not get cut. I have a Spec Bump several months now and never encountered that problem, wet hands or dry. Maybe the Spec Bump's rough handles and serrated flipper/guard make it more resistant to hand slippage than smoother models?

On any model with a stud lock, the stud is recessed below the top of the blade and handles when the blade is open. I find if the thumb slides forward, it usually slides off the handle onto the spine of the blade without disengaging the stud. But there is no foolproof lock.

Any lock can accidently disengage when using the knife hard. I have had particularly bad luck with liner locks. They are easy to accidently close by twisting counterclockwise and pulling the spring out of engagement. It happened to me several times while drilling holes in leather with the point. When sufficient time had passed, I forgot to twist clockwise and did it again.

Lockbacks can also be opened by pressing hard enough on the mechanism. The Axis lock is not immune either.

Pat Crawford's integral lock is probably less likely to accidently open because the spring must be lifted first. Gripping the handle hard results in a tighter lockup.

Perhaps the Stud Lock is more prone to accidental opening than most, but that has not been my experience so far.

I don't have any accidents regarding accidentally disengaging the stud lock on my mini mojo. But it seems at least possible.

The safest style is probably the compression lock.

I suppose you're right about there being no fool proof lock(other than a fixed blade! ), but I still can't wait to get my hands back on the mojo!
and I've had similar problems with liner locks too.

I think that similar to crawford's style lock, is CRKT's LAWK system. But I think that others that have releases or locks on the pivot lock that I can't recall.

I have a frame lock, liner lock, and a stud lock all Kershaws and have never had a problem with the locks disengaging in any of them.

I'm the same way. The only Kershaw lock I've seen fail was a Storm a friend of mine had, but other than that, they've been really great.

Oh, is there any chance I could see the G10 offset in some photos? I can't wait to try this knife out.

Yeah, I am really looking forward to the G-10 Offset too. Photos would be great, if there are any available.

Hey, just wanted to wish all of you fellow Kershaw nuts a very merry Christmas. Hope you have a great one, and as the rest of us I am really looking forward to the 2007 products from Kershaw.
I am off of work for the next five days, and I am really looking forward to it.

I almost pulled the trigger on the current Offset but I decided to get the zt0200 and wait for the G-10 Offset (just can't get over the handle). Thomas said the G-10 Offset will be out in January so I think I can wait, although it is going to be hard.
