Kershaw Tilt...again.

Ahem. What I meant by the previous post is something to the effect of, "my Tilt arrived and it's a fantastic knife."

Thomas and everybody else at Kershaw, you guys really hit this one out of the park.

LUCKY, I got no email today, still have my finger crossed that I get one from Dave.

Hey Thomas, does the KVT system need lube or a break in period?

I actually have three of these, and the one that I have been flipping is much more smooth than the others. I assume that the ball bearings seat in or something and become more smooth? Also, should I lube them?

How is the pivot set up by the way? When I adjust the blade play out (barely even noticeable, had to really tweak it to notice) it didn't seem to affect the smoothness. Is there a bushing in there?

My Tilt arrived yesterday.

I rushed home to check the knife out. Thanks for packaging the knife so carefully, Dave - the Tilt arrived in perfect condition.

I took a few pictures then put it to use cutting up some taters, then used it for cutting up my steak.

Here are my first Tilt action shots -

The knife is larger, but it feels very light, surprisingly light. My example weighs 5oz.

Fit and finish is perfect. Love the bias-cut lockbar, like on the speedform, the kerf is very thin, and the lockbar makes contact with the frame and cannot be pushed beyond it's normal travel limit.

The tip of the blade is very sharp and pointy - which is a very useful feature for a knife. This is no prybar.

My knife has zero blade play, and locks up very firmly.

This is my first knife with a ball-bearing pivot, and it is everything I had hoped it would be.

My test for smoothness in a folding blade is to hold the knife by the blade with the handle at 90 degrees and then let the handle go. Some knives are smooth and free enough that the handle will fall down to the blade.

With the Tilt, I was able to hold the handle, with the blade out at 90 degrees, and the BLADE falls down and closes. That is smooth and free, folks!

I am very happy with the Tilt - it is comfortable in hand, slices well, is smooth and free of play, locks up perfectly, and looks like a million bucks.

Thanks to the folks at Kershaw for coming up with this great and innovative design!!

best regards -

Got mine in yesterday, and all I can say is WOW. The fit and finish on this thing is unbelievable. I'm enamored by this knife. I'm almost afraid to put it in my pocket it's so beautiful. I may have just purchased my very first safe queen.

(Translation: I'm going to have to buy another, one to use and one to look pretty.)

Is #95 the highest number so far?

Kind of a big handful. :) But that is a good thing, keep them coming.

Three?

I didn't even get one yet.

It is my favorite knife ever, so I figured why not get all three that he had. An unfortunate aside to that is the fact that I will need to sell off a few of my other favorite knives. Good for the people on the forums though. Haha

Thanks for the quick reply CTS :)

Nice video you did too btw, hopefully I can hold a Tilt one day :)

Thanks man! I'm not entirely sure how big of a run kershaw did, but if it's near 1000 then I don't see why everyone can't get a few. We (blade enthusiasts) are probably the only people that even know about this knife. Heck, I'd venture to say most people on this site don't even know about it. I would guess that there is not a huge group of people on the list for these. I'm sure there are a lot, but I wouldn't guess that thousands of people have pre ordered.

I'm guessing it's closer to 300 than 1000, since that was the approximate number on the last two Kershaw boutique runs, the Volt and the Speedform. Thomas also mentioned that "more than 300" sets of parts for the Tilt had been cut a while back in this thread. Of course, that technically doesn't rule out there being 1000 produced -- since 1000 would of course count as "more than 300" -- but when someone says something like that it typically means that the number is near, but slightly more than, whatever number they mention.

Ahh ok. Well if each person in this thread got one (~95 people) that would only be 1/3 of the knives produced given it was around 300. That still leaves the other 2/3 up for grabs. I'd say odds are that if you pre ordered you'll probably get one. Just a guess though.

Yeah, I'm guessing that folks who pre-ordered relatively early should be fine. And given that it's a fairly unusual design, there'll probably be some folks get one but realize it's not right for their needs and sell it off on the Exchange.

I still want to know:

Is it ok to lube the ball bearings? 1 of my Tilts is noticeably less smooth after tightening the blade play out. I would imagine that lube would free it up.
