Well, if things work out with the blade I started on wed, whoever recieves it will get the first integral bolster blade i'll have ever made. Of course, if it doesnt look right, it'll never leave my shop and you'll never hear from it again. So i'm crossing my fingers that things work out alright with it =)

I realized something that I need to do before having a blade leave my shop to someone I havent known for years etc... I need to get some sort of stamp to mark my work !

Oh crud! I hadn't thought of that! I don't think I can swing a stamp right now. I guess I'll have to get creative. Thanks for the reality check Justin! -Matt-

I had to stamp and re-stamp mine 4 times. Stamp, grind, stamp, dang, grind....I swear. I'm switching over to a Personalizer. If you're steel is not perfectly flat, that's the way it goes. I'm psyched!!!!

The letters are all typed out and all of the envelopes are addressed. They go out tomorrow morning.

You're pumped... I'm nervous !

Looking around right now at what it'll take to fix up this electro etch machine, and if it'll be worth my time (and money) right now to get a hand stamp for now from evers company down the road instead for the time being.

There a quite a few bladesmiths who etch instead of stamp. Mace switched over for all but his rough blacksmith knives. So did I, but what do I know?

got started on the knife today. it a small drop point, all blade grinding done now handle time. thinking cocobolo with wrought iron. o its looking good

All of the letters went out today. 28 sent out, plus my wife handed mine to me as I was driving to beautiful Astoria, Oregon.

I know who's gettin' mine. I know who's gettin' mine! Na-na-na-na-na. :p

I have no idea who anyone else has though. My wife wouldn't even let me glance over as she was pulling them and putting them in the envelopes. I wouldn't have peeked anyhow. What fun would it be for me, if I know ahead of time, who was getting what knives as they were posted here in the coming weeks as people progressed on their creations.

She did make a Master list of who has who, that she is keeping, just in case anyone loses their letter.

So guys, post progress pictures of what you're making to tease everyone else.

Ickie,

Great idea and good on ya for running with this.. If I was more of a knifemaker and had more time at the moment I would have loved to have been involved. With my current workload I think my next knife will be done around my retirement age. So you can pen me in for the 2047 Christmas knife gift exchange!!

Good luck with your knives guys.

Woohoo!!! Have my letter!!! Now if I can just not mess it up by doing what I normally do..."now, just a little more...." :D Thanks again for the great idea Scott!

No letter yet, but I've been putting a ton of work into the blade. With some of the names on that list, I'm almost dreading getting the name and knowing who'll be recieving my blade >_<

Since Ickie wants progress pictures, here's a pair of my blade in progress. O1 forged drop point hunter with integral bolster. The blade is mostly done, about 20 hours into it with most of that getting all the lines equal with hand files and getting that "last" stubborn 120 grit scratch out, now I'm working on fitting a handle to it. I hope it doesnt suck too much >_< it's only blade #5 for me. (why did I get talked into this!)

Dude,
It's looking awesome! I'm so glad you got into this. It wouldn't be the same without you.

Here's a pic of what I'm working on. It's a basic drop point, edc/skinner. Measures, for now, 8" overall with a 3" blade. Gonna hopefully start the bevelling tomorrow night. Bit hard to get much done on the weeknights.

I think I'm going to put a really nice set of Zebrawood scales on that I have. Wife got them for me for Father's Day and they've been waiting for the right knife. This seems like it.

oh, it's 1/8" thick O1 and will be flat ground with brass pins and a thong tube. Will definitely have a leather sheath.

Hope it works well for whoever gets it.

I'll post more as it progresses.

SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE
All participants need to post their handle and their real name in this thread. If you are mallninja99 and we have only the name John Johnson as a receiver, we may never know who got it.
It also might help decide what type of knife to make/send. A little reading of past posts may determine if the person is a big hunter, or a marine, or a chef......well, you see where I'm going.

Stacy Apelt - aka Bladsmth

( Scott,do you have a master list you want to post?)

Charles Shepherd aka CharlieTN

Love hiking (not much nowadays with a 2 1/2 year old and another due the end of this month), anything pretty much outdoors. Always carry at least 2 knives on me.

Justin Mercier and I hope my handle is obvious here =) (that being said, I do use the handle Tharkis on most non-metal work related forums)

Umm... I just like knives >_< I've been a hobby blacksmith for almost 2 years, and I started making knives about a year ago (yes, I'm a slow worker!) Other than that, I'm a very avid computer gamer, mostly playing everquest with friends for the time being.
