Knifemakers Christmas season gift exchange!

What is the deadline to mail your knife. I guess I need to know when it should be done by. Looks like some have them done.

Figured with how slow I am that i needed a head start, was out in the shop for the last hour forging =P The other reason why i relented and put my name in, is i know i'm going to work my ass off to make sure anything leaving my shop is the damned well best I can do at this time... and unfortunately I'm by far my own worst critic, i'll re-do something 10 dozen times because I dont like how it came out, and end up wasting plenty of time when 8 of the 10 times no one else would ever have noticed what bugged me enough to redo the whole thing

We hope that you can get it there by Christmas, but if not, just do your best. Who ever gets our Serbian friend will have two weeks delivery time at the very least, so will need to plan for that. If it's late though, then it's late.

All I ask is that no one be like my little brother. In our family Christmas gift exchange, he had my name two years in a row. Both 2001 and 2002. I never got a gift from him in 2001, or 2002 at Christmas. But on July 4th, 2003, I got my two Christmas gifts from him at a family picnic when we were all home for a summer family reunion. I had given up.

As I said, if you don't make it in time, just do your best and make it eventually. Just don't be a Kevan Ickes (<<<my little brothers name).

Actually, I think that is the secret to becoming a Master at anything. The speed will come with practice. I think you're on the right track buddy.

Update time, got my knife profiled out (yes I'm one of those stock-removal type) I'm actually quite happy so far. I'll start the bevels tonight. I'm excited for this one.

I'll add photos in a bit.

One other thought I had, when each of us sends out the knife we make, we should include a photo of ourselves and some info. Help to bring this great community closer.

Great idea! In my letters out to each of you I was going to put that a description of the knife would be nice to have included with it. But a picture would be great too!

I heat treated mine yesterday and all went well...no warpage to correct, I programmed my oven correctly...etc so that saved a buch of time. Now I'm trying to get as far as I can (without messing up too bad) before I welcome my son into the world in a couple of weeks. Looks like I have a double deadline! -Matt-

Congrats man. I hear you on the time crunch. My second daughter is due 11/30. Gotta have it done before then. Life stops for a bit after that date a(NO COMPLAINTS THOUGH).

Congrats to you also! My wife is scheduled for c-section on the 19th, but she probably won't make it that long. Gonna miss deer season, but hey, it's an extreme circumstance!;) -Matt-

The cutoff to get in is tomorrow, November 2nd at noon PST.

I'll need tomorrow afternoon to put all of the letters and envelopes together. They're going out to all of you in Saturdays mail. My wife and I are heading for Astoria, Oregon for some kind of real estate thing early on Saturday morning. She's going to be putting the letters in the envelopes and sealing them as I drive. She will also make sure that no one gets their own name. We'll be going by the post office when we get there to drop them in the mail.

Thanks to everyone that stepped up and got involved in this. This place really feels like family to me, and you've all proved that once again!

So.............Anyone else want in before the deadline? 15 hours and 47 minutes left to get in!

Ickie

got mine profiled, have all day tomorrow off to work on it so we will see how far i get.

Hunting in Africa? I'm so frickin' jealous! Was a productive and successful hunt?

Welcome in!

By the way, my wife flies out of Akron/Canton airport this afternoon to come home. She's been in Stark County all week with my family.

You can email them to me at scott.ickes@timken.com I'd love to see them!

I have a customer in Montana that goes to Africa every other year. Last year he brought home 14 that he had mounted for his trophy room. He has over 120 mounts in his home now. Seems like it would be a cluttered look, but his home is a 6500 sq. foot log home. It's the nicest home I've ever been in.

I told him that Jeff Foxworthy says that if your annual taxidermy bill is higher than your annual income, you might be a redneck. He paused for a few seconds, and then said, "If you think I'm upset by that statement, I'm not. I was just doing some math in my head. And, I might be a redneck."

Well, if things work out with the blade I started on wed, whoever recieves it will get the first integral bolster blade i'll have ever made. Of course, if it doesnt look right, it'll never leave my shop and you'll never hear from it again. So i'm crossing my fingers that things work out alright with it =)

I realized something that I need to do before having a blade leave my shop to someone I havent known for years etc... I need to get some sort of stamp to mark my work !
