Least amount you would spend$$$$$ ???

years ago i found a USN Mk 2 kinfe on the side of a trail in the woods. it was stuck in the ground up to the hilt. 1095 steel, rat tail tang, but a fairly solid knife that had a sheath i made for it.

also have a custom blade that was a guft from the maker. it's ATS 34.

so, found or gift = "free". and they'd beat a $10 Mora! :D

Nike ACGs are about $50, or they were the last time i got a pair, but my Danners were about three times that price. only problem is they SQUEAK. :(

but i need decent footwear, Cody Lundin i'm not!

I would have to say one of my CRK OPR knives. My Jereboam I with sawback or shadow I or IV would do nicely for this. I can install my CRK whistle butt cap with compass instead of the standard one. I can put a fire starter or matches inside the handle and some other items like line and some fish hools and sinkers. It has nothing to do with the price, they are just some of the knives that I own that I have confidence in and know I can rely on. Price range is $175-$500

Well, since the original post didn't say I can't take an axe, a saw and a backpack full of supplies, I'm going to say an arbitrary number of ten bucks or so. =)

I know this is sacrilege, but the importance of your knife depends a lot on what else you have with you. And quite a bit on your skill level. I'm sure we have several members who'd just make their own edged tools in absence of any and be just fine.

Knife=$175 (Fallkniven A1) I really dont think I could break the knife.
Boots=$130 Morrells for high miles/ Danners for off trail/ Muck Boot for marshes

Boots really kinda depends on where you are. My guess is no matter what gear you had with you, when your lost, you'd be happy you had it. And would always want something better.

Some decent thinking. As to price most prices of mine are out of date as I have had them years. The Mora (Frost) is a common companion in the car, a little bit short but good with food preparation when on the road. I have also made one out of a Frost 115 blank that is thicker steel and very durable. Give or take $15.

I have, and frequently carry a custom 4&1/2 inch $40.00 made by a MasterSmith of ball bearing, differentially tempered. I had to handle and sheath it. A few Sogs but they are over that price. My SAK replacement cost (here) is $40. So I guess I would go with a cost of $40.00

At $40.00...I suppose it would be this one :D

Boots, , I bought some cheap boots for wearing in the slush of Nigerian sites. Donated them to my (ex) maid after trying to walk them in. So I use my old Redwings and clean them up. 8 years going on they need replacement. They cost $80 back then and the replacements are going to set me back $250+, when I have the $ I will get the ones suitable for the bush.

Sandals - in Botswana is going to get you a clinic visit to remove an infection from a 1.5" thorn.

I only read the initial post, so I don't know if the prompt has changed any. But, the cheapest edged tool I would trust to do everything with would probably be my 14'' Fiskars. So, $35.00.

First I'd like to say its all about your skill. I've been using knives for a very long time and have developed a skill for using them that the average person simply does not possess. Its something I'm sure most of us notice as advanced knife enthusiasts.

Knife choice for me really doesn't start with the price tag, blade shape, grind type and thickness, steel, handle material, and comfort of the handle all come first. The problem with my style of picking a blade though is I can find what I want in a 10 dollar knife or a 1000 dollar knife. I think is more of a fight between price, quality, and the things you WANT.

Now to answer the question.

Of the blades I own I would have no problem with my Scrap yard Scrapper 5. Its a perfect size with a amazing handle and a very useful blade shape. The steel SR101 (52100) is one of my favorite and holds up to my standards. It not a full tang knife but I know it would handle the level of use it would see in the situation presented. Retail price IIRC was 99, second hand 150 plus 40 for kydex. Say about 200.

But because of skill a SAK, mora or multitool would work too ;)

Boots, danner or redwings.

I'd spend any amount that I'd have to on boots, but I think $200 will get me anything I need barring the most extreme conditions.
So I'd spend more on boots than on a knife.

Thank You Gentleman for your kind answers

Going to post results and the ratio of $ spent on knives vs boots this weekend

Remember--I only need the $ amount you would spend on boots and the $ amount you would spend on knives

That is the LEAST amount of $ you would spend on each to feel safe

I do not need the model of boots or knives--I need the cost to get them to you

Thanks

IMO, this question allows one the flexibility of budgeting and consideration/pre-planning. With that in mind...

Knife: $50 Izula
Boots: $180-200 Danner/Asolo/Salomon/Lowa - got to protect the wheels or Im not walking out of anywhere.

My .02 and worth every penny you paid...
