Let me be the first on 2008 to ask

My favorite:

aaaaaaaugh!

I got that ALOT with my first knife... "is it for killing people?" no! "skinning?" uh ok... "it isnt a good hunting knife..."

Its just a knife!!

"What has your brother been up to?"
"He is really into making knives"
"How the heck do you make a knife!?"
"Shape steel, heat treat, add a handle: Here is a picture of his first knife:"
"Is that for killing people??"

Is it sharp?

no the stupidest thing I have seen is people pic up a knife run their hand down the blade then try and shave hair. I had a knife sitting in the taxidermy shop where I work, probably ten people cut theirselves then I had to resharpen when the guy that bought it because it wouldn't shave hair becauses it shaved hair everyday for two months

This actually happend to me the other night,

Thats a ok folder you have made but look at my ECD, its REAL stainless from China.

"no really, where do you buy this stuff"

Customer at my table after I had just said that I make everything he was looking at when I explained that everything he was looking at was handmade by me he once again asked where he could buy it, I answered that he could buy it right there from me, as I was the one who made it, and he asked again where I got it!

I guess the concept that people actually make anything in America has been so completely purged from the collective consciousness by the walmart culture that this guy simply could not wrap his head around the idea that someone could have actually built something themselves!
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I like the one I have peple ask me in person.....where do you buy the blades?

Can you make me a katana with a 68inch blade for $30? Can you forge and sharpen a Egyptian sword for $60?

Oh the brutality.

I think this is why people on other forums talk trash about this forum. Not that this stuff is not funny but what happend to "there are no stupid questions". Dont get me wrong I have had tables at gun shows and have had my fair share of frustration with uknowing people. Things like old guys leaving bits of finger and blood all over my table of knves. Or being shown a Pakistan folder and told "this is the only knife I use and it has skinned and dressed tons of deer and elk." When I hear this I usually cringe. Why would someone want to skin and dress an elk with a dull 2 inch blade? I have also had someone ask if my damscus blades had been case hardedend. AH No thats damascus.

At the same time I have been the one asking lots of questions and felt like an idiot. There are car parts stores and lumber yards that I will not go to because of how I was treated.

I trust this is venting not an example of how you guys are in person.
I also hope that this thread is not scaring off any newbies and sending them to one of the other forums to be led astray.

The worst thing for me is having someone from my family buy some pakistan crap and show it off to me. "Look how cool this 15 inch folder with the nascar handle is."

William

A lot of guys have been on this forum for a lot of years and every now and then will be allowed the pleasure of having a laugh.

They answer the same questions for years and do it with a smile. There is no ill feeling towards anyone that I have seen. Just a little harmless jabbing.

note: You also notice the first jabb is aimed right at myself. I am the King of the triple quench post from way back :D

I am sure it is all in fun. I do very much enjoy this forum. I was only being the devils advocate.
Thanks

I can't quote him directly, but the funiiest/scariest post of they past year was the alleged 15 year old kid who was having a moral dilemna about making shivs out of cheap stainless steel and selling them to his classmates:eek::D

Oh god, dont remind me. The only person i've seen banned faster than that was the D.Brock fellow over in the bowie of the year 2007 discussion over in the custom and handmade knives forum =P

Man, I knew all my questions were infuriating you guys.

Sorry for the questions, but thanks for the patient responses. I learned to do this here at BF. So I owe all my mediocrity to y'all...

"I sell them for $5, they arent even heat treated! but im concerned that any handle would break off in combat"

as a 16 year old who is trying to make proper tools, its hard when so many people my age are well... proper tools.
