Like a phoenix? CSC is reborn...

I certainly do disapprove of that universal medallion shield it is a cheap looking thing.

Fans of a soft pull and light snap appreciated their knives, so if you like a strong pull then maybe not. New ones may be different though , let's judge then.

Towards the end of their first run (~2013-2015) I found all of their knives I handled to have pulls in the 6-8 range. I had one of their barlows with a pull that so strong it was uncomfortable and bent my thumbnail on several occasions. I still have four of their boy's knives from the original batches, and all have solid 6-7 pulls. So I'm feeling good about the chances that the new knives will have decent spring strength.

I have to agree about the shield though. By far the weakest aspect of their design. I'd prefer silver colored and non-medallion shaped.

All the same, I've been EDC-ing CSC knives exclusively since 2014. Had a boy's knife in my pocket for the first two years, then, after I decided I just wasn't comfortable with only a single blade for use, I switched to the 2015 forum knife.

This thread caught my eye a couple of days ago and like others, I am quite thrilled with the idea that not only is the company making a comeback, but it is CSC, a much loved company from everything that I have read. I think we should all be thrilled that a company that we all thought was long gone is making a go of it again, even if it is in a limited capacity.

With that said, I do have some concerns...

Based on the knives available for pre-order, I have a couple of criticisms. The first one is their shield.

I know that the Coin(?) shield is a "classic" for them and that they are simply bringing it back but I do not care for it. It looks a bit cheap and the fact that it appears to be glued on rather than pinned really only furthers that impression.

The second criticism is in regards to what mrknife mrknife has mentioned. The blade to handle ratio is funky. Now it could be the angle that the pictures were taken but regardless, it gives the impression of a blade that is a bit short for its handle. Considering that their Boys Knife pattern is one that I favor, it is a bit off-putting to have the aesthetics be a bit of a turn off right out of the gate...

Of course, this is mostly a bit of critical speculation on my part and I eagerly await being shown otherwise. I want them to succeed and I want to buy their knives if they prove to pass muster but that will remain to be seen.

I have some thoughts regarding the article that was shared above.

***The following quotes are taken from the Knife News article posted above***

Fantastic news and as I mentioned earlier, this should be cause for much excitement. We need more cutlers and I really hope this is the beginning of something special.

I came around here after Canal Street had already shut their doors so I do not have any personal experience with their knives or their patterns. I have, however, enjoyed seeing the forum knives that they have made when they get posted here. It sounds like they are going to be producing some patterns that are familiar to those of you who know their knives better than I do. How does their Boy's Knife compare to GEC's 15? In terms of its dimensions and overall performance? This has me curious due to my concerns stated earlier in this post.

This is where the article makes me raise my eyebrows a bit. I don't care about buzzwords like "small batch", "lofty standards", or "better made knives than _____". Inferior companies, the world around, make the same claims and it usually leaves a sour feeling in my gut. May not be the case with them as they have a good reputation but still, this may just speak to my lack of experience with them.

On to some further highlights.

I think this should be cause for many of our members to celebrate. With Queen now shuttered for who knows how long, perhaps forever, good stainless options are few and far between if you do not count Case. Despite offering a solid stainless like 154CM, I still like that they will be making knives in 1095 as well.

I think this is quite exciting. One of the complaints that I have heard about GEC in recent times is that they aren't doing enough exotic or even just "different" handle materials, staying within the realm of safe and going with what everyone knows. I only hope that this won't simply serve to drive up the cost substantially. The $100 slipjoint market is a very nice niche and I am not so sure I would want to deviate from that.

This has me cautiously curious but I will wait to see what they come up with before i get too excited about it.

If this is true, then I look forward to seeing what they offer in the not so distant future. Should be exciting times for us all.

believe me, ive modified my 15 spear, and I want to redesign the blade after my modding. the boys knife although a favorite pattern of mine, I nitpick all the time with every knife. I do have the eric's jack which is my only example of the CSC boys knife as I had missed the golden micarta back then since I had put it off. They all disappeared when the news broke that CSC was going dodo. But hey, like Lazarus, CSC is back, and I cant wait to see if theyve made any improvements. I do wonder if they may have snatched up the old Queen machines... or this is the old equipment from schrade

CSC was/is one of my favorite makers. The only knife brand I own more of is Schrade itself. I like the coin shield personally. It's different. I like the silver colored one better they used on sfos though. They always had softer pulls that GEC/Queen and I appreciated that. Never understood the fascination with bear trap knives.

Also enjoyed the varied handle materials they used and that they werent scared of modern stuff like carbon fiber and kirinite.

Wish them well, I'll be supporting their endeavor with my wallet. With this new structure hope they'll tackle some new oatterns.

Still waiting for someone to do a nice lobster.

mrknife mrknife ,

Here's a huge thank you for starting this thread.

Beginning with Eric's Jack, I fell hard for the CSC boys' knife. Which is weird for me, as single blade slippies rarely capture my interest. But there's just something about this pattern that really speaks to me. It's the only pattern I've ever had the desire to really chase down and collect. I grabbed four of the original five boys' knives that made it out through regular distribution channels. And after CSC closed its doors in 2015, it looked like that diminutive collection was going to be it for me.

But now....

If not for your thread, there's a good chance I would have missed out on these new examples. So thank you, thank you, thank you.

I love the upgraded steel, and the new addition of wharncliffe blades to the lineup is super exciting. Hopefully in the future we'll see boys' knives with spear blades as well.

Anyway. Looks like I'll be counting days for the next couple of months, just waiting for my pre-orders to come through.

Really happy to see them make a comeback! Hope it goes well. I have several from them from when I was in NY near their factory, was just too cool to pass that opportunity up.

 just passing on the good word, saw it in one of the knife groups and was surprised it wasnt here. i was quite fond of the CSC boys knife but more their half moon trappers as it was what brought me here. well pictures of @2Dead 's collection on google did really.

Since this is a "new" start for CSC, I think it would be kinda cool if they did something special. They couldn't really do anything with the knives, but maybe with the box. I read in an earlier post that they had fancy boxes anyway, but to do something as a thank you to the people that are taking a chance on them by pre-ordering the knives would be nice. I wish I was artistic enough to think of a good idea for them, but that is not in my wheelhouse.

My first Canal Street knife was a half moon single blade trapper. The pull was very light and it didn’t close on its own. I sent it back to them and explained the issue. I expected them to stand by their product and make the repairs, which they did.

I received a brand new knife in return with a hand written letter explaining that the knife couldn’t be repaired and that they went ahead and replaced it completely. The new knife was perfect, the pull, the edge.... ect. The new knife was exactly what I expected in the beginning, but I understood that their knives are handmade and not everything is perfect. The hand written letter was genuine and it gave me the feeling that they truly cared. I wouldn’t hesitate to give them my business again!

I am excited mostly for the knives to be made in 154CM though I expect a flipper market like GEC, particularly if these are as well made as talked up to be, given the small batch sizes.

Hey folks, just a little clarification; It's not a wharncliffe blade, it's a sheepfoot. Not sure how they mixed that one up. I do see a wharncliffe sometime in the future though.

Eric

Will you be making knives, Eric?

Yes indeedy! So far it's me and another gent, Kenny, who also worked at the old shop. He's another guy who could sit at any department and do amazing work. I've got a picture of him here from the old days but it's only from the back lol!

(Say, what happened to the button for adding photos or attachments from your files? Don't see it anymore.)

Eric, that is great news that you are involved with this venture! Cutlers like yourself are what had made CSC's knife QC improve greatly towards the end, so I know these new offerings are in good hands! Good luck, friend!

I think the 'upload a file' icon only shows with a gold membership or higher Eric. I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.

That is great to hear. I hope you are making my boys knife. I imagine you will be leaving a makers mark?

Alan, thanks for the heads up on that, I didn't even realize my membership ran out, got 'er done!

Appreciate the kind words Glenn, it should be interesting to say the least!

LastRodeo, not sure if I am, still sorting out the details on assembly. I'll likely be starting the wildebeast knives next week, then probably the ram's horn sheepfoot and the stag boy's knives.

BTW, good luck.

So glad to hear you're back on the job! Somehow it makes these knives just a little more special.

I remember seeing pictures somewhere of some prototype linerless carbon fiber boys' knives you were working on back in 2015. They looked stellar. Can't wait to see what you turn out in this new co-op.
