Like a phoenix? CSC is reborn...

Here's a recent web article on the Canal Street rebirth.

knifenews.com/canal-street-cutlery-back-in-business-after-2015-closure/

I'm no economist, but I don't think that the stated business plan of producing 4-6 knives daily will produce enough revenue to keep 10 cutlers employed.

One thing about it, I would expect quality control to be flawless on the first runs.

Off topic here but I take it by your username that your profile pic is of a boykin spaniel?

I had one that we lost in 2016...she was a month away from her 16th birthday. Best companion I ever had and a better bird dog.

Not a dog I commonly come across outside Sunter or Kershaw county.

Marley, the one pictured in my profile picture, was my second yellow-eyed beauty that I brought to the upstate. We got a good many up here. Unfortunately, I had to put her down about a month ago.:( She was just over 15 years old. Like you said, great hunter, great companion, and a ball of energy in a small package.

To keep this CSC related, I really look forward to seeing pictures here of their super knives.

Looks to me like all the pre-orders are sold out now. Glad I got in early on a few of those.

The article does say "less than ten". Could be that CSC is playing their cards close to the vest and not admitting that it's one guy full time and another in his spare time. Or a half dozen guys in their spare time. Agreed if it's nine guys full time, the volume sounds low if they're going to pay themselves much at all. 9 guys * 8 hours * $20/hr /6 knives = $240 profit per knife needed just for salaries. And that assumes the $20/hr includes FICA, FUTA, etc. Otherwise add 40%, bringing that to $28 an hour. And they still have to pay for overhead and materials. If we turn it around and assume that they can clear $50 per knife at 5 knives per day, that gives them $250 a day to play with. One guy earning $20 an hour plus FICA/FUTA eats up $224 of that, leaving only $26 per day to cover rent, utilities, insurance, maintenance, phone service, etc. One or two guys struggling along on not much money sounds about right.

Edit: math error

With less than 5 master cutlers able to make 5/6 knives daily
can be read two ways that the less than 5 so 1-4 cutlers are making 5 or 6 knives each or together make 5 or 6 knives total per day. This greatly effects any sort of cost analysis but also the fact it is less than 5 cutlets instead of the less than 10 though it could be more than 5 cutlers assuming any beyond the first 4 are apprenticing or something as the less than 5 is master cutlers. We can assume anyone not a master is earning less so another wrench to throw at you math magicians :p

The folks at Canal Street have many years of experience they know what there doing....the business is not new to them.

The folks at Queen had many years of experience and the business was not new to them. And Schrade. And Camillus. And Ulster. And Western. And so on, ad infinitum.

And CSC has already gone out of business once.

I like the quality that I see in the pre-order photos I see on the Red Hill site. And I applaud their choice of superior blade steels on some models. But, I think that I'm going to wait a bit and see how this plays out.

I thought it was posted somewhere, maybe even in this thread, Eric had said that him and one other guy were making these new knives. I may be wrong.

Yes indeedy! So far it's me and another gent, Kenny, who also worked at the old shop. He's another guy who could sit at any department and do amazing work. I've got a picture of him here from the old days but it's only from the back lol!

(Say, what happened to the button for adding photos or attachments from your files? Don't see it anymore.)

Eric

Eric makes a nice knife!

Woodman......

Unlike the companies that you mentioned CSC did not close due to financial reason.....but numerous deaths of experienced employees that would not allow them to continue at the time.

Looks like my scarlet bone boy's knife shipped today. Much earlier than I expected and I can't wait to check it out. Going to be a cornucopia of boy's knives in the next few months!
Awesome...the next several weeks are going to fun with the new CSC's, stag 44's and all the different 14's in production.
