Lum Tanto

Happy Easter!

You are so right JD, and I agree. I wish they would bring it back with some of the new steels you mention; I really like the Southard steel, CTS204P it is an amazing performer in my limited use; even CPM 154CM would be awesome; I will continue to dream of the day. It would be a hit in 110v as well.

I want to thank you for launching this thread ;) It's been one of the most interesting threads here at BF I've got to read in quite a while. It truly honors one of my all time favorite Spyderco collaborations and one of my all time very favorite knife designers as well

The C-46 Lum Tanto folder along with the LUM fixed blade I truly hope are two models that Spyderco brings back about every 4 to 5 years or so. I would love to see how a C-46 Lum Tanto folder would do with one of the newer/better supersteels. I especially would like to see the LUM fixed blade in one of the supersteels as well.

Again it's the one tanto design that made me completely re-think tanto blades all over again. Because some of the early ones I remember from the 90s till the early 2000s were truly "mall ninja" fantasy toys to say the least. But these designs of Bob Lum's are truly real functional tanto designs in league all their own. Again "Makariotes" I sincerely thank you for taking us down a great side-street on Memory Lane.

I have the Lum tanto in ATS 55 black blade, black g-10(?) partially serrated. Found it in a truck I bought at auction in about...2002? It's kinda rough but I like it. Missing the clip. It's a big blade but not at all heavy. I used to carry it regularly. Right back pocket. The size actually made it very easy to deploy easily. And quietly. I kinda "pimped" it myself by cutting down the appleseed grind to shaving. I prefer it that way. Just an old beater really. But I'm happy to have it.

Hey that's a great testimony "sirupatespecial" :) I got my "user" black-bladed, ATS-55, combo edged, G-10 handled version in a multi-knife trade here on BF a few years ago. And like yourself I found it to be a very interesting and useful EDC blade. It's been in my EDC rotation for quite a few years now and I doubt if I ever part with it. Unless I can change out the blade to a VG-10 but I'm quite content with the ATS-55 blade that is on it.

If you contact Spyderco "warranty & repair dept I'm sure they could get you a pocket clip for it unless you just like it the way it is. I actually learned to sharpen the "Hamaguri" (appleseed" point/tip on the blade so I left mine the way it was from the factory. I love the thickness of the spine on the blade and the handle design is near total perfection for my hand. The only Spyder I own with a better handle is my TEMPERANCE 1 original fixed blade model. It is as though they designed both handles from both models for me. But the C-46 is a superb EDC blade and will be in my rotation for many years to come if I have my way about it.

I still kick myself when I think about how I sold my gray Lum Tanto sprint. A Hap 40 tanto would be awesome though.

You are very welcome my friend, honestly I was just very excited to have acquired this blade; like I said, I always had a lust attack when I saw it. You are right again; according to what I have read, I think in the included Edgeducation paper in the box, that Bob Lum introduced the tanto shape to the American folder market, it is too bad that he is no longer with us, I like almost all his designs.

Of course the thread is getting long because there is a lot of interest in this particular model; I can tell everyone likes it a lot. I really hope that Spyderco is paying attention and perhaps they will bring it back, I just hope if they do, that it is not a sprint run, they usually sell in a few days when they come out and I do not always have the money to buy a knife in short notice; but even then, the chances of getting one would be nice. Like Wharn says, a HAP-40 would be a hit, or as we discussed earlier, any of the newer steels, even ZDP189 would be awesome, dang VG10 is not bad at all so I won't complain if it happens in that steel, in my experience it is a very tough steel and it holds a keen edge, easy to sharpen too, and very rust proof, I love VG10.

Seems like Sirupatespecial got a nice gift with the truck!!

I really wish they made a Lum Tanto folder with either the compression lock or the back lock.

Well I don't mean to hijack or derail this thread in any way. But with the great luck I've had with my M390 C-36 Military model I just can't help but wonder how good a C-46 Lum Tanto folder would be with that steel in particular. Or even the LUM fixed blade for that matter.

Also I'm wondering what other handle materials would be cool for a new Sprint of the folder or fixed blade. I dearly loved the Micarta they used on the first Lum fixed blade from the mid 2000s. I know a lot of the guys gripe about the Micarta being a bit heavier than G-10 but I love the solid feel of Micarta particularly on a fixed blade.

One of my very biggest regrets of all time was when I got desperate and sold my Titanium handled, PE C-46 Lum folder. Like the old Rolling Stone's song says "You Make A Grown Man Cry" :o:rolleyes: Well that's just about how I felt after selling that gem. And the Lum C-46 was Spyderco's second best Titanium handled knife>> second only to the original Titanium ATR IMO

Again this has been one of the better threads I've seen here at BF in quite some time. So don't quit now Spyderheads!! :D

For folks that have never seen one this is a big blade. But it seems much lighter than other "modern" folders.

Have you noticed that the lockup seems sloppy? And when mine is adjusted so it deploys like I want that the blade is kinda loose? I just think it adds character, and when I carry it I'm always reminded of Mr. Lum. It's kinda sentimental really and I wouldn't sell it for anything. Not that anyone would offer anything for this old thing.....

Nah, you're not derailing at all; it is all about the one and only Lum Tanto, yeah M390 would be an awesome blade, with a compression lock to put the cherry on top. :)
Or maybe a framelock, a La Sage kind; that would be nice, but there is nothing wrong with the nested liner lock of the Millie either.

You are so right; it is a big blade, I haven't measured it but it is big, under 4 inches; that's is why I like it very much; the lock seems a little late on mine but might be that was the trend back then, I'm not sure, it sure is not sloppy though. Maybe yours was used hard before you found it in that truck, but what I have is rock solid. Gotta love that big blade in any state, I say.

Hey you really hit on something there "Makariotes" when mentioning the possibility of using a compression lock on a LUM Tanto folder>> because it was the really nice compression lock that made the original Spyderco GUNTING model such an awesome folder as it was. I had honestly never thought of a LUM Tanto with a compression lock>> but the more I think about it the more I believe the two features would catapult the sales in a big way. Also use a Titanium pocketclip

For some reason I can't get the Carbon Fiber handle out of my head either>> there are two Spyders that I would love with a Carbon Fiber handle>> the LUM Tanto folder and the C-60 Ayoob>> those two models in CF handles would take on a completely different character all together IMO.

Add a black boron carbide coated blade along with an optional combo edge for those who like ( like myself)>> because it is one of the very few Spyderco folders that I've had a combo edge and loved it on that particular model. The Lum tanto folder is one model you could do new Sprint Runs every 6 months to a year and sell out every run>> I have no doubts at all.

Lots of neat info and gallery of blades. I love the idea of a compression lock(although that would likely require rebuild of the knife mould which I understand is a costly time consuming endeavour), I personally think that carbon fibre would be a little slick for handle material for this knife, unless it had an anso pattern to give it some grip.

Spyderco's "Peel Ply" Carbon Fiber is not really slick at all. Their most recently used CF isn't either ( at least the two that I've had were not slick). I think you're right on about the costs being prohibitive changing the locking system. Actually I don't really have anything against the liner lock on the LUM or Military models>> I've never had either one ever fail on me at all. The first generation CF that Spyderco used did have some slick properties to it but I do think that they have remedied that problem.

I still would love to see how a really nice Micarta handle would perform on the C-46 Lum Tanto folder. It's simply one of Spyderco's better knives regardless which materials they used on each variant.

Dang, I wish I had bought an Ayoob when they were available; it looked weird to me so I got something else; then I started reading about the reasons for the odd angle on the blade and it made lots of sense; yeah CF would be awesome on the Lum Tanto, micarta too; and DLC coating is very tough, I have no experience with boron coated blades though.
I haven't seen the Gunting yet, got to search it out.
Now what about a frame lock in titanium? That would be cool, then add some gimping on the thumb ramp, like a PM2, and that would make me very happy. I think I have already said that but I'm dreaming again.
Honestly, at this point any version would be more than welcome.
Razrman8's pictures are a treat for this thread, can't stop looking at them; the benchmade looks right at home in the middle of the bunch. Awesome!!

Very cool Dodge!! Love the titanium one.

Interesting observation because to tell you all the truth I never really liked Titanium handles until I got the Titanium ATR and the Titanium C-46 Lum tanto folder. When I seen how well it gripped with a well designed handle I totally changed my mind 180 degrees about Titanium for knife handle material>> now it's one of my top 3 favs. Now I'm wanting more of my other personal favorite Spyderco models with Ti handles. What I wouldn't give for a C-60 Ayoob model with a Titanium handle.

But the LUM Tanto folder is so well designed and so ergonomically perfect that even FRN would feel better with that handle design :D. Oh sure the blade design on the Lum C-46 Tanto is truly a Van Gogh grade piece of art but also don't forget how perfectly designed that handle is as well. There is only one other handle in the Spyder kingdom that I like better than the one of the C-46 Lum and that is the handle on the original TEMPERANCE 1 fixed blade model. To me that handle and the one on the LUM C-46 are both close to perfection IMO.
