Modified Production Knives (traditional only)

This is a Case 6383 that I've been using as a test ground for whittling blade mods. I finally got edges I'm happy with on the TruSharp blades and now it's quite enjoyable to use.

I continued the curve from the tip of the small clip to give it a bit of a scimitar shape:

And turned the small pen into a coping blade with a lambsfoot-inspired nose:

Once I had it working well for whittling, I still found its original color unappealing, so I tried my hand at dyeing and added a splash of red. I like how it turned out. I kinda reminds me of how Astro Pops looked, if you remember those:

I don't have a great before picture, but you can get a pretty good idea through this comparison shot against an older, unmodified 6383. This was taken after shaping the blades, but before dyeing.

I remember Astro-Pops! :D

I really like the new shapes of the secondaries, since I always want at least one straight edged blade on a whittler. It looks like you thinned the edge angles quite a bit.:thumbsup: Looks great!

Just ordered a 2 blade 56, already planning on turning the pen into a coping...

Well, now that I have the knife in hand I won’t be changing the pen after all. Two reasons, 1. The angle of the tip in use with the shape of the handle allows me to use it much in the way I assumed I’d want the coping for. 2. The belly starts too far back, I’d have to go almost 90 degrees which wouldn’t give me the tip I would have wanted. Or else I’d cut into the nick or have to regrind the blade which I don’t want to do.

I think this guy will be getting the most pocket time and use for a while!

I need to pick some brains... Glennbad, you out there?

Regarding modding TL 29s, mostly Camillus, but also a SW, a Klein, a Utica, and a couple of Cam TL 27s.( The springs and blades are a bit thinner on the 27s vs the 29s)

There are sellers on the ‘bay who sell Shrade parts from the factory closing sell off.

I bought a few clip blades of various lengths, some pens, and saw blades like you’d find on a sak. Anyone ever tried fitting these into an electrician?

I have some that the poor spear has been hopelessly ground on which I bought to cannibalize the springs out of.

Will those Schrade blades fit the TL 29 springs? Will I just need to try and see?

I just thought some variety of blades could make for cool and useful jacks.

And while I’m asking questions, anyone ever tried regrindinding the screw driver into a leather punch? Seems like it might exceed my freehand grinding skills.

Thanks in advance!

I don't recall that I have ever franken-knifed mixed parts like that. I know that the spring holes don't usually line up with different manufacturers liners, but I'm not sure of the other parts.

Leather punch? Sounds interesting...

Thanks, glenn. I’m just going to have to open one up and see.
I have at least two knife mod/repair projects to finish first, and hope to have some before and after pics to share soon.

Yours are very inspiring!

It only took a couple of days before I could no longer resist the temptation to take some 150 grit sandpaper to the polished micarta scales on my new Mudbug. The scales have massively higher traction now, and I happen to prefer the look. Nice patina forming on the blade as well.

My only one for now, about to restore an old electricians knife so I will add it whenever I get around to it.
All I did was cut the spey blade down because I didn't find it useful, then went back and added a nail nick that I don't have pictures of.
