Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

Yes.The small head is not that big of a problem cause the longer handle helps deliver a solid chop.I wouldn't try cutting down a huge tree with it but for camp-sized(2-4") wood it's great.

I ordered some of that oven setting Gun-Kote. I was going to use it on my modded trail hawk, which is coming along. Will the baking of the Gun-Kote mess up the temper of the head?

The GK website specs the baking temp at 300-325 deg F. That should not be high enough to affect temper, I wouldn't worry about it.

Fellas,

Here are some images (that don't do the unit justice) of my newest Thawk Battle Systems "Parked Polished 'n Ready To Pound" GSM01 Thawk ;)

This is the first of four (4) units I am building and -- once again -- I must pay tribute to Mr. GunSnob who parked, polished, and put a razor convex edge on these heads.

This first unit is built with a 24" haft. The boot is size 12 to give the haft some scale. I believe that 24" is as long as I'd want to go with haft length for the CS TrailHawk. The finish has a green tint to it because I thought I'd try green Rit dye on the haft. Don't ever use Rit dye fellas...bad idea. I removed the Rit dye with mineral spirits and then stained it with the ebony minwax but it retained a green tint. Again, I wish I was a better photographer...these images do not do this unit justice. And yes...branded "Q" in tribute to Quintus Fabius Maximus, the great Roman procrastinator.

Here we go...

CitizenQ Extremely good job
The handle is little long:D
I guess that vector001 inspired you:thumbup:

Convex edge is courtesy of The GunSnob! And it is S H A R P! It gently grazed my palm the other day and I bled plenty! It was good to bleed...real good. ;)

These Trailhawks have really evolved into some very nice and functional designs. CitizenQ...you sure ain't like hatchetjack!

Nice work!

I just got my 1st trailhawk in mail last week. From reading all of the posts here and elsewhere I just had to try one out. First thing I did was chop down some oleanders and I have to admit this thing kicks the shiite out of my fiskers hatchet. So far I have cut off the hammer nub, removed most of the coating, put a convex grind on her (not finalized) and sanded and stained the hell out of this thing and that was just the first day. I will have to take pictures of it now with the paracord wrap and finished edge.

CitizenQ - thanks for the great thread. Gave me lots of great ideas. I love the cord wrap. One suggestion for you - get one of those magnets-on-a-stick from any big box hardware outfit. It really helps with finding those little dropped pins & screws without having to get down on the ground (mentioned in one of your posts from August?). I have a seven yr. old who 'helps' me with projects. Lots of things get dropped.

thx - cpr

looks great Q, I knew my work would be complemented by yours.

I like the long handles.

IH8U great bob job on the head. Light and easy now?

Here's a tip from a bike ridin' buddy. He says to apply hairspray to the haft prior to applying the 550 cord wrap. He says this will help with preventing the 550 cord from slipping on the haft during hard usage. I'm gonna try it...but I wrap the paracord wet (so it shrinks as it drys and becomes tighter) and I wonder how wet paracord will interact with the hairspray.

Not to hijack the thread but who is vector001 and what do his hawks look like?? (link?) BTW nice looking hawk there!!! keep up the good work..

exactly correct, brother 'Q...:)....

i also do other hawks and axes now, slowly but surely.

not sure what i am allowed to say here, as i have been spanked once, so ...uh ...YEAH.

....har...!

a couple cool cats that are regulars here are about to receive some hawks they ordered from me, so they can tell ya more, i reckon, brother rocket'.
